    Peace, O valiant king,

borne round by the noble angels.

I came to you while hostile eyes gazed

at me, like arrows all around me.

Who, then, told the people that I

would complain of the harm they force us to endure?

You have indeed left us to the calamities of time—

overwhelming, with no refuge from them.

We are weary of them; we have no patience left,

and weariness is the mildest of our afflictions from them.

Muhammad, it has been twenty years,

and a single year of sorrow is enough for a man.

Do you know what the nights force us to endure,

while their mighty calamities ride us down?

Would you accept that oppression should settle among us?

Then death is the free man's dearest wish.

Is death not fairer than a life

in which a man is humiliated or wronged?

Do you sleep, O Muhammad, heedless of a land

whose sleeping people have laid its sacred bounds open to violation?

    وَمِثلُكَ لَيسَ يُعييهِ القِيامُ

    Rise, then, and see what misery has befallen it;

and rising does not weary one such as you.

And indeed, if you swept your gaze across it,

streaming tears would stain the bosom of your robe.

And I swear, if you had the power to punish,

then vengeance from you would destroy us.

We have demolished the lofty achievements you built

with your resolve, while calamities had resolve of their own.

Will you not be satisfied, in place of those of us who were disloyal,

    by men marked by faithfulness?

Equal are those among them whom Egypt has nurtured

through changing fortunes, and those nurtured by al-Sham.

May God preserve al-Sham, for it has bestowed on us so many

favors that are never cut off from us.

Among its people we have noble kin,

among whom the covenant and the bond of honor are preserved.

They are Egypt's helpers and her defenders

when mighty calamities descend upon her.

    نُصافيهِم وَإِن كَرِهَ الطَغامُ

    And they are our closest brothers there;

we offer them sincere friendship, even if the rabble resent it.

    Close kinship draws us together,

and mutual affection and harmony unite us.
