They say to me, “What have you read?” hoping they

may gain satisfying knowledge of the people of the earth.

recounting reports I do not comprehend.

the saliva of vipers, leaving the wound bleeding.

They appear; faces turn pale, and inward shrink

    peoples in terror, fearing calamities.

we make the dust-scattering winds their mounts.

friends among their chroniclers, and foes.

though they themselves brought its causes and provocations.

The ambitions of a people who, if they found a ladder,

would cast anchors upon the seven layered heavens!

to carry sins or drag the rooted mountains.

now I fear they may number eight.

to Guillaume to leave no survivor among mankind.

and reserve for the hostile host a keen-edged sword,

before which the loftiest of strongholds falls kneeling.

cleave enemies and darkness to reveal victory.

and whether today they can do anything but complain.

    coveting the caliphs’ exalted realm.

holding out hopes to misguided souls.

towers pouring death, red and deep-crimson.

And others, like volcano mouths, hurtled onward,

swift of step, mounting peaks and hills.

revealing in them a hidden secret of death.

battalions that had camped in a valley of Hell.

who raids the khagans’ realm, an aggressor.

By your life, our troops indeed still

answer the caller summoning them to renewed war.

and jostle the ravening eagles in the sky.

Glorious deeds filling all time, their number ever growing—

so tell the sons of the Thames: “Count your disgraces!”
