It is the protectorate—today its herald has risen.
It's the protection, today its caller called
Hold back your hands, and turn away from its disgraces.
Repel the fists, and block its predators
لاdo not تَجعَلواmake النيلَthe Nile صَيداًprey فيin مَخالِبِهاits claws

Do not make the Nile prey in its claws.
Don't make the Nile prey in its claws
For woe to the Nile if its beasts of prey rage.
Or else woe to the Nile if its beasts rage
تَكَشَّفَتlifted غَمَراتُthe waves الرَوعِof terror وَاِنحَسَرَتand receded

The waves of terror have lifted; gone are
The covers of terror were exposed and rolled back
The raids of every warrior in broad, ample armor.
The caves of every wide shield protecting it
ماnot زالَتِceased الحَربُthe war حَتّىuntil اِرتَدَّretreated قائِدُهاits commander

The war did not cease until its commander retreated,
The war continued until its leader retreated
And its raider hurried away with plunder seized by force.
And the looting invader was subdued

The horses bolt, and the heroes retreat,
The horses neigh and the heroes flee
In disarray; their survivors veer away from those calling.
Chaos where the caller strays from the called

They are distraught with terror; calling in their rear ranks is
Distracted by fear, at its end calling
Sa'd, while their front ranks call down curses on Sa'd.
For Saad, and calling against Saad and his supporters
ماnot كانَwas بِالقائِدِa commander المَيمونِauspicious طالِعُهُhis star

He would not have been a commander with an auspicious star,
It wasn't the fate of the auspicious leader
Had their wayward one discerned the path of right guidance.
If the path of righteousness was clear to its strayers

If their commander has called them to tyranny,
If its commander called it to tyranny
Their admonisher has surely warned them against the tyrant.
Its warner had prohibited it from the tyrant
ماhow أَظلَمَunjust القَومَthe people يَجزونَrepay البِلادَthe land أَذىًharm

How unjust these people are, repaying the land with harm,
How unjust are the people who harmed the country
While she is life itself and all that life's rewards bestow.
It's the lifeblood and its provisions are its dues
ياO سَعدُSa'd إِنَّindeed عُقوقَbetrayal of النَفسِone's soul مهلكَةًruin

O Sa'd, betrayal of one's own soul is indeed ruin;
Oh Saad, betraying the self is ruinous
So preserve your soul, and beware its Maker's fierce punishment.
So take hold of yourself, beware the grip of its Maker

No person prospers whose ear rejects counsel,
One doesn't succeed, blocking advice from his hearing
When their herald calls the headstrong among the peoples.
If the reckless caller of peoples calls him

And you will never see a schemer conceal his secret intent,
You'll never see a deceiver hiding his secrets
Seeking treachery, without eventually revealing it.
Seeking betrayal except he will show it

Every time I speak the truth, am I rejected
The more I spoke the word of truth, the more they denied me
By a people who regard truth as misguidance and deception?
A people who see the truth as misleading and plotting

I reproach Sa'd, while they stint him no honor;
I blame Saad yet he's above blame
And the more I reproach him, the more they proclaim him faultless.
The more I blame, the more exonerated he becomes

Were it not for al-Kinana, the Quiver, which I guard and which shields me,
If it wasn't for politeness, protecting it and preventing me
Death would have felled a soul whose archer took earnest aim.
The dove would've fallen, shot by its own shooter

I have loved her with the love of one enthralled by her present,
I loved it, the love of one enamored with its present
And by her free tomorrow, enchanted by her past.
And its free future, infatuated with its past
وَالحُبُّand love فيin شِرعَةِthe code of الأَقوامِthe peoples مَهزَلَةٌa farce

And love, in the code of peoples, is a farce,
Love in the creed of nations is laughable
Its laughing figure grieves you at times, and its weeping one too.
Its laughter makes you happy, its tears make you sad

A tale that Sa'd fashioned, and that was embellished
A tale Saad crafted and beautified
For children by its teller, one of his lordly companions.
From his hunting friends for the kids retelling it

I renounce every deceiver of his nation,
I'm innocent of every deceiver of his nation
Who bargains with the foe when death presses hard within her.
Who bargains with the opponent when ruin strikes it

If he survives, the horror of her death does not alarm him;
If he survives, the horror of its death doesn't scare him
And if he sings, the voice announcing her death does not restrain him.
And if it gets tough, the voice of its mourner doesn't move him
