لعمريby my life لئنindeed, if خاسَbroke faith الرئيسُthe president بعهدهwith his pledge
لعمري لئن خاسَ الرئيسُ بعهده
وقامand arose عليهagainst him للرياءِof hypocrisy دليلُproof
وقام عليه للرياءِ دليلُ
By my life, if the president has broken his pledge,
By my life! If the president has failed in his covenant,
And proof of hypocrisy has arisen against him,
And hypocrisy against him is evident,
لَعهديindeed, my knowledge بهof him جَمُّabundant التقلّبِfickleness مالهhe has no
لَعهدي به جَمُّ التقلّبِ ماله
سِوىother than الغدرِtreachery إنif جدَّbecame earnest الوُفاةُthe faithful سبيلُa way
سِوى الغدرِ إن جدَّ الوُفاةُ سبيلُ
Indeed, I know him as utterly fickle; he has no
My covenant with him is full of ups and downs,
Way but treachery when the faithful are in earnest.
Except for treachery, when the loyal take the path.
وماand not كانhe was ممنamong those who يَعرفُknow الحقَّthe truth أوor يرىsee
وما كان ممن يَعرفُ الحقَّ أو يرى
مكانthe place of الهُدَىguidance والعارفونand those who know قليلُfew
مكان الهُدَى والعارفون قليلُ
He was never among those who know the truth or see
He was not of those who know the truth or see
Where guidance lies—and those who know are few.
The place of guidance, and the knowing are few.
وماand not كنتُI was أخشىfear أنthat يرىadopt النّاسُthe people رأيَهُhis view
وما كنتُ أخشى أن يرى النّاسُ رأيَهُ
فَتَعْمَىand so go blind قلوبٌhearts أوor تطيشَgrow reckless عقولُminds
فَتَعْمَى قلوبٌ أو تطيشَ عقولُ
I never feared that people would adopt his view,
I did not fear that people would see his opinion,
And so hearts would go blind or minds grow reckless.
And hearts would be blinded or minds deranged.
ألاbehold فيin سبيلthe cause of اللهGod مِنّاon our part مواقفٌstands
ألا في سبيل الله مِنّا مواقفٌ
رأيناwe saw بهاin them الأحداثَthe events كيفhow تهولُterrify
رأينا بها الأحداثَ كيف تهولُ
Behold, we have taken stands in God's cause,
Indeed, in the way of God we have firm positions
In which we saw how terrifying events could be.
Where we saw the young terrified and recoil.
رُميناwe were assailed بأمثالِwith the likes of الجِبالِthe mountains منof الأذىharm
رُمينا بأمثالِ الجِبالِ من الأذى
وسالتand flowed عليناupon us للسِّبابِof abuse سُيولُtorrents
وسالت علينا للسِّبابِ سُيولُ
We were assailed by harm as massive as mountains,
We were pelted with sufferings like mountains,
And torrents of abuse poured down upon us.
And torrents of insults poured down on us.
فماso not رابناunsettled us فيin الحقِّthe truth ماwhat رابunsettled غيرَناothers besides us
فما رابنا في الحقِّ ما راب غيرَنا
ولاnor عابناdisgraced us عمّاfrom what نريدwe seek نُكولُshrinking back
ولا عابنا عمّا نريد نُكولُ
Yet, in truth's cause, what unsettled others did not unsettle us,
Yet we did not doubt the truth, unlike others,
Nor did retreat from what we seek disgrace us.
Nor did we criticize what we wanted to avoid.
نجاهدُwe strive لاnot نرجوwe hope for سوىother than اللهِGod ناصراًas a helper
نجاهدُ لا نرجو سوى اللهِ ناصراً
ولاnor نَستِحلُّwe deem lawful البَغْيَoppression حينwhen نُصولُwe charge
ولا نَستِحلُّ البَغْيَ حين نُصولُ
We strive, hoping for no helper but God,
We struggle, hoping for none but God as helper,
Nor do we deem oppression lawful when we charge.
Nor do we allow oppression when we attack.
