How can there be repose while the fire of war blazes,

And terror's volcano blazes and erupts?

Woe to the eyes! Can drowsiness veil them, when

Grief and sleeplessness have worn the crescent thin above them?

It spends the night fluttering with fear and caution,

Burning with anguish, watching what fate will bring.

The Hatim was struck with dread and now stands trembling,

And sorrows and memories have troubled Yathrib.

Woe to the pilgrims when their rites fall due—

What will the circumambulator and the 'umrah pilgrim among them see?

Does the House rejoice, or do its sides weep

In sorrow, while the Corner and the Stone wail within it?

Where is the cousin of God's Messenger to quench it—

A war whose fire casts sparks upon my liver?

Where are the banner and God's cavalry, sent forth

By Amr, while Umar shouts in their wake?

Where are the champions of Fihr and Mudar,

And of Quraysh? Where are the illustrious lords?

Where are the righteous angels, led

By Gabriel, racing to battle and rushing forward?

Where are the melees in which souls are scattered,

Slain, while victory and triumph gallop through them?

Where are the battles that make thrones shake

In terror, and crowns and royal couches tremble?

Where are the Caesars, vanquished, with neither arrogance

Nor abasement keeping them aloof from us?

Where are the defenders, now our sanctities are lost?

Where are the capable men, and where the zealous protectors?

Where are the souls that hurl themselves forward, unafraid?

Where are the resolves that press on without weakness?

Where are the hands, with wealth pouring forth

From them, as a thick cloud pours down in torrents?

Who will bring them to me—a proud company of noble chiefs,

Who never once neglected a pledge or acted treacherously?

    وَإِن أَصِح فيهِمُ مُستَنفِراً نَفَروا

    If I call them to dispel distress, they rush forward;

And if I cry among them, summoning to arms, they march forth.

Onward, sons of Egypt! God summons you,

So hasten, before the turns of fortune destroy us.

At Your service, my Lord; I claim no merit before You for it.

For we have no desire apart from what You will for us.

At Your service, at Your service! Those people have alarmed

The Caliphate's flock with the scheme they plotted.

The invader attacked her with an astonishing assault,

Such as no jinn or human had launched before him.

Where are the chronicles, that we may search out their wonders?

And where is what the signs and lessons have preserved?

A war without cause—its legions surge,

So the land trembles, and the sea is aflame.

O you who kindle war unjustly in Tripoli,

What excuse will you offer history?

Is this so, when the age, to you, is the age of light?

What will happen, then, when the ages grow dark?

Where are those who claimed fairness was their law,

And whose spokesman rose to boast of justice?

O most fair and just of all people,

Justice is struck down, and fairness lies dying.

What a fine law your civilization has ordained:

Right is forsaken, and aggression triumphs.

We are not—even if our wits have fled and hollow

Our heads have grown—dazzled by words of falsehood.

When shall I see that the army and the fleet have cured

The disease of those we rebuked, yet who would not be deterred?

The disease of civilization at its loftiest heights—

So why blame a dog if rabies takes hold of it?
