Salute the crescent, and salute the nation of the Nile.

Welcome the feast, the feast of the age and the generation.

O year that ushers onward all that is awaited

in hope, and brings every hoped-for thing near,

bring nations the truest tidings of their wishes,

nations whom time has assailed with falsehoods.

Hope has lingered long; they have spurned every consolation

from healers, and wearied of every soothing explanation.

Reveal to us, from the secrets of the unseen, what was concealed

by the veils of events, lowered and drawn down.

I see the matter: its signs have already appeared

in a true, sought-for promise among God's pledges.

The Prophet goes forth with it, his household calling out,

and the Spirit between cries of 'God is greatest' and 'There is no god but God.'

It courses forth from revelation; whoever denies its majesty,

God reveals to him the terrors of Gabriel.

Who can thwart a decree whose fulfillment God ordains,

or repel the truth of inspiration and revelation?

O herald of despair, hoping to frighten us,

look at the verses: have they been shaken by alteration?

What troubles you, as you seek to wrong us,

about a promise guaranteed under God's protection?

O year, release from our ranks

in Egypt every shackled captive of the arena.

Ask her lofty pulpits: did they not tremble

when time cast down the illustrious, noble chiefs?

They were master orators: every wayward soul was guided

by what they said, and every deranged mind was healed.

When they began speaking there, the pulpits' sides shook,

and the earth shook throughout its breadth and length.

People could not tell whether they had brought a clear proof

of wondrous speech, or had brought a Gospel.

The prophets and God's messengers—we know them

as the most faithful guides, most deserving of distinction.

They were granted certainty; their high resolves were never thwarted,

resolves that left no army on earth undefeated.

Crowns fell before them in fear

    from fastenings weakened or undone.

The ranks of excellence were not ordained for the faint-hearted,

nor granted to a timorous man of feeble courage.

And truth, were it not for the proud, high noses that uphold it,

would be overmastered by every base, despised soul.

Without firm resolves, no noble distinction would be won

by any hand, nor would a soul rejoice in honor.

Among swords, every grooved blade surely cuts through

in battle's terror, while every blunted blade rebounds.

In the days of his migration, the Prophet established for us

a plainly known law of true resolve.

He advanced upon the truth; his resolve was not battered

by the wind of error, nor did he heed intimidation.

Quraysh were enraged and roused every impetuous warrior,

with a sinewy forearm that cleaves an Indian blade.

They seek to kill a daring champion who assails

their religion, slain in the idols' sanctuary.

He fears no people, whether few or many,

in a momentous quest for God or a desired end.

He sought Medina, abundant in resolve, impelled

by fulfilling a decree enacted for the Lord of humankind.

So the cave grew impregnable, and its walls rose high,

through the protection of lion, cubs, and thicket.

When he saw al-Siddiq's distress, he dispelled it

with a radiant, polished expression of God's word.

Then the soul recovered, and certainty returned to it,

and the doubt and fancy that had been there were lifted away.

The Messenger of God's resolve bore him onward,

hurling hardships aside and twisting away obstacles.

Error sends forth its raiding bands, and he strikes it

with a sharp sword unsheathed in God's right hand.

Until truth rose across the horizons, and onward spread

the pure-white laws, guiding every lost wanderer.

And goodness rallied, walking after its downfall

over the unavenged blood of the heralds of evil.

They stretched out a rope of error; he turned it back with a hand

that destroyed its strength, so it lay severed.

He assailed kings, and his piercing shafts left

not one limb of them uneaten in the charge.

He shatters throne after throne, its Caesar flown

from it, and hurls away crown after crown.

The soul, if its resolve is sound, overcomes

the deadly force of armies and the devastation of fleets.

And no seeker will attain inviolate glory

except by surrendering something costly among precious possessions.

How far success lies from one who has no determination,

and how a cause is wasted amid talk and hearsay!

People are two peoples: one wholly devoted to action,

seeking life, and another like statues.

O year that Egypt stood to bid farewell,

take your place behind time, or vanish.

How many a crushing burden in you, but for what sustains us

of God's strength, would have proved unbearable!

The eye sees nothing appearing before it

without seeing beside it the image of Azrael.

When the deaths rush about bewildered, they are urged on

by the bellowing of a caravan-driver guided to life's appointed ends.

fettered and shackled in the hand of fate.

One soul flies away, and another finds no rest

except in a hoped-for promise and expectation.

The anguished one cries out for a right with no protector,

far from its defenders, entrusted to the Judge.

It sees no sound judgment in an affair it arranges,

nor turns back to judgment and reason:

a ravaging calamity whose terrors have not subsided

for any son of Egypt, bewildered or preoccupied.

We have not forgotten Egypt, nor have our resolves been deceived

by what they told us of the phoenix and the ghoul.

We followed the path, seeking a rightly guided course

that erases suspicions and dispels every interpretation.

The pursuit of glory is no novelty among peoples, nor

is a rightful claimant ever blameworthy in his striving.

Who taught these people that truth can be repelled

by false assertions or evil deeds?

Then the lions rose in fury, guarding the Nile's honor.

in massed crowds and in varied bands.

Offering fragrant flowers, tender and dew-wet,

anointed with graceful women's tears, bedewed.

No fair, tender woman remained in her chamber,

neither virgin nor new mother with little children.

Valor blazed as her noble women hurried forth,

    amid their bracelets and anklets.

They chanted a stirring selection of wondrous verses,

adding beautiful repetition and measured recitation.

They cry, 'Egypt!'—and Egypt is every mother of noble offspring

and every such father among her children, surpassed by none.

will remain forever stricken by chastisement.

They said, 'Peace!' and their crier shook the universe,

from a watering-place drenched anew with heroes' blood.

And there went on raising whispered pleas and breathing them out

the hands of orphans and the mouths of the destitute.

They gave us glad tidings of what the president ordained for us:

a law with clear exposition and detail.

They misled time with what they told it,

until it elapsed amid delegation and appointing proxies.

No task is hard when the people weaken its flank

with their shoulders and strike it into submission.

Today the free men of the nations turn again to

a long-standing promise to Egypt, long deferred.

If told, 'Our appointed day is the day humankind rises,'

they would say, 'Hasty fellows—they have alarmed us with their speed!'

God protects whatever His care has willed

should not be violated, and rejects every tainted thing.

Look at the House: were its sacred bounds lost

when the master of the elephant raided it?

He assailed him with birds filling the sky, speeding

down toward him, pelting him with stones of baked clay.

We, by the lives of those who harbored suspicions of us,

are neither weaklings nor a people of idlers.

We rise toward the highest honor, uplifted

by a glory of ours that we have only rooted more firmly.

Firm amid time, even when its earthquakes rage,

folding mountains and hurling them into upheaval.

We preserve Egypt and protect her with what she has known

of precious coats of armor and tunics:

those hearts that guard her trusts,

of every lover of her, fevered and love-stricken.

The keenest sword-edges recoil from them, though they have been battered

by cares, until they have become like sieves.

Longing has never ceased to overflow within them,

until it struck them with a disease of lingering aftereffects.

O Egypt, your year is a year of goodness; await

in it the fulfillment of wishes, and trust in its gifts.

    هَل يَسلُبُ اللَهُ نُعمى بَعدَ تَخويلِ

    God has bestowed on you the blessing that has grown so great;

does God take back a blessing after bestowing it?

God has never broken a promise, nor have proved false

the hopes of a people enfolded in God's kindness.
