By your Lord, O new year,

Do you hold the hopes we long for?

Calamities have followed one another, so every heart

Is sorrowful, grief-stricken within its ribs.

We bore them, heavy burdens; had they fallen

Upon the mountains, none would have ceased to sway.

And patience has stretched long, while the days come

And go with calamities, black as they are.

    Pitch-black darkness, and abiding sorrow,

And all-pervading evil, and grievous harm.

People wish that they might all perish,

So that graves might hide them from the world.

They have indeed renounced life and loathed it,

And the stubborn foe has shown them no mercy.

O year, bring us glad tidings of good,

For you bear witness to our hardships.

    May adversity lift from us,

And a life of ease gladden our people.

You have risen over the sons of Islam as a light,

Around which glad tidings and good fortune gather.

It reminds them of noble forefathers,

    Blessed men of glorious renown.

They built their glory through might; we fear

And dread that lions should oppose it.

And they established justice out of faith and piety,

Thus through them it gained a lofty edifice.

    كَذاكَ العَدلُ صاحِبُهُ يَسودُ

    Through it they conquered kingdoms, then ruled;

Such is justice: its upholder reigns.

Their glories endure across the generations,

    Immortalized whenever immortality is mentioned.

    عَسى الزَمَنُ الَّذي وَلّى يَعودُ

    Come, O sons of Islam, let us strive;

Perhaps the age that has passed will return.

Come, O sons of Egypt, come!

For standing still neither avails nor benefits.

O year, you are a newborn to us,

Whose auspicious rising greets the East.

Yours will be the gracious deed, if we fulfill

Through you our desires—and yours the praiseworthy legacy.

And hope rests in God, for none but He

Can grant what creatures and servants hope for.
