Turn in longing to God, O Adi ibn Hatim,

and leave, without regret, the faith of one who seeks blindness.

Turn in longing to God, and follow His religion, which

the one sent from the house of Hashim professes.

You left the people of Tayy for fear of being killed,

yet you are not safe from the affliction of the slain.

For a soul, it is death enough that its life go astray

and wander bewildered where speckled serpents crawl.

Were you not distressed when you learned, amid blindness,

your place—or are you a man unaware?

Adi, hear your sister's tidings, and seek help

through resolute counsel that dispels the darkness of doubt.

His heart inclined, and he chose it as a course of guidance,

which shields whoever chooses it from every reproacher.

And his mounts journeyed toward Muhammad,

radiant in their saddles, strides, and hoof-pads.

Then he lodged him in his house and accorded him

a place whose like every visitor wished for.

And he said to him: I know full well what

you profess; bear witness, and you will be free of sin.

Did you not take the chief's quarter-share of spoils, though it is forbidden,

following the practice of those who instituted it—wrongdoers all?

He replied: Yes; indeed, I repent to God,

and I have recognized the truth as a binding necessity.

You are indeed God's Messenger; there is no doubt about you

for anyone who doubts, while truth's signs are plain.

Through Islam I rescued my soul, and it became

healthy, free of its worsening disease.

It is the supreme safeguard; if it is not attained by

the souls of created beings, every protector fails them.

    Consider, Adi, what Muhammad says,

and rouse every sleeper among the hostile people.

God's religion will spread its shade across the earth,

and hold sway over every ruler among its lords.

And wealth will overflow in every dwelling-place

and land, with no one to take it or compete for it.

And the woman of the curtained chamber will go out, unafraid of

    an offender's ill-treatment or a criminal's harm.

So she will come from Busra to the House, with no

guardian, despite her weakness, from among the defenders of honor.

He is God; so know His path, O Adi,

and abandon the passing fancies of delusion from every deluded person.
