    Sons of Thalabah, rise!

For the lion has resolved to act.

Against you was hurled the son of Harithah

by God's Messenger, when he struck.

You claimed it was he—a claim

of one who raves and knows nothing.

So before his coming, there took flight

souls afflicted with a touch of madness.

And a fine brother of battle is Zayd,

when he fights in earnest and charges in.

He wades through the dust, thickly heaped,

and guards the sword and the banner.

    Their host fled in terror,

and had it met him, it would not have escaped unharmed.

Wretched indeed the host! False proved

its strength, and wretched was its boast.

The son of Harithah sought it out,

but it was neither before him nor nearby.

It slipped away into its hiding places,

    so its existence became nothingness.

    Come, come, O Zayd!

Bring the sheep and the livestock!

Give the people time: have they sought

    anything but what defeats resolve?

They went in his wake, and on he went,

    dragging his keen sword forward.

So they did not reach him, hard as they strove,

nor deprive him of the booty he won.

    Hold, you worshippers of idols!

For God has already passed judgment.

You were content to wrong yourselves,

so He brought you to ruin, and did you no wrong.
