To a people who disbelieved in the Book
To the people who rejected the Book
And strayed from the finest path.
And deviated from the best path

وليسand there is no لهfor him عنكapart from you منany مَعدلِalternative
The Messenger summoned you, so you are the envoy;
The Messenger called upon you, so you are the Messenger's
And he has no alternative to you.
He has none other than you to turn to

فَخُذْهُso seize it بِصَمصامِكَwith your keen-edged sword الأطولِthe longer
Before you stands a fortress with lofty summits;
Before you lies a fortress with high walls
So seize it with your longer, keen-edged sword.
So take it with your very long spear

And pass by Al-Akidar and pelt him with it
Down to you from on high, despite his pride.
Though he is so arrogant and haughty

جَناحَthe wing of الذليلِthe humbled one فلمso not يُقتلِbe killed
You killed his brother, and he lowered before you
You killed his brother and he surrendered to you
The wing of the humbled, and so was not killed.
The wing of one humbled, yet he was not killed
وجِئتَand you brought بهwith him سيِّدَthe lord of الفاتحينthe conquerors
فأوغَلَthen he delved deep فيinto قلبهِhis heart المقفلِlocked
And you brought him to the lord of conquerors,
And you came with the master of conquerors
Who delved deep into his locked heart.
Who penetrated the gates of his closed heart
هَداهhe guided him إلىto اللَّهِGod بعدafter الضلالِerror
وبعدand after العَمىblindness لمnot يَكَدْcome close to يَنجَلِيclear away
He guided him to God after he had strayed,
He guided him to God after his misguidance
And after blindness that scarcely cleared.
And after blindness his sight almost cleared

And gave him a refuge through his covenant,
And gave him safety through his covenant
To protect him—what a refuge!
What an excellent granter of refuge you are

سَتنقُضyou will break عهدكَyour covenant دَأْبَas is the habit of الشقِيِّthe wretched one
وتجمعُand you will rally فيin غَيِّكَyour waywardness الأوّلِformer
You will break your covenant, as the wretched do,
Your era will end the habit of the wretched one
And rally in your former waywardness.
And gather again your first perdition

Then your Lord will hurl Ibn al-Walid at you
Your Lord will strike you with the son of Al-Walid
And cure you of your intractable ailment
And cure you from your perplexing disease
بصاعقةٍwith a thunderbolt مَنْwhoever يَذُقْهاtastes it يَقُلْwill say

With a thunderbolt—whoever tastes it will say:
With a thunderbolt - whoever tastes it will say
“As though thunderbolts had never been sent!”
It's as if thunderbolts were never sent
أتفعلُwill you do? وَيْحَكَwoe to you ماwhat لوif عقلتَyou used reason
لأعرضتَyou would have turned away عنهfrom it ولمand not تفعلِdo
Will you do—woe to you—what, had you used reason,
Would you do, woe to you, what if you had reason
You would have shunned and left undone?
You would refrain from it and not do it
أُكيدرُUkaydir ليسthere is no لنفسٍfor any soul وَقاءprotection

Ukaydir, no soul has protection
Ukaydir, no soul has immunity
When God tests whomever He tests.
When God decides to test those He tests
