إِنّيIndeed, I نَصَحتُكَadvised you فَاِتَّهَمتَso you mistrusted نَصيحَتيmy counsel
وَزَعَمتَand you claimed أَنَّكَthat you ذوpossessor of تَجارِبَexperiences حُوَّلُshrewd
Indeed, I advised you, but you mistrusted my counsel.
And you claimed to be a shrewd man of experience.
وَذَهَبتَand you went on تَركَبُembracing كُلَّevery رَأيٍopinion جامِحٍheadstrong
حَتّىuntil طَحاcarried away بِكَwith you ماwhat تَقولُyou say وَتَفعَلُand you do
You went on embracing every headstrong opinion,
until your words and deeds carried you away.
ياO شُؤمَdisaster of رَأيِكَyour judgment حينَwhen تَزعُمyou suppose أَوor تَرىyou believe
أَنّاthat we عَلىto مَكروهِwhat is hateful in حُكمِكَyour rule نَنزِلُsubmit
How disastrous your judgment when you suppose or believe
that we will submit to the hateful dictates of your rule.
اغلُلrestrain عَصاكَyour staff إِلىtogether with لِسانِكَyour tongue إِنَّماfor only
يَلقىmeets الهَوانَhumiliation الفاحِشُthe foulmouthed المُتَبَذِّلُthe shameless
Restrain your staff, along with your tongue; for only
the foulmouthed and shameless meet humiliation.
لَسناwe are not إِذاwhen أَخَذَتtakes up يَمينُكَyour right hand بِالعَصاthe staff

When your right hand takes up the staff, we are not
among those you drive with it and make bolt.
إِنَّindeed المُؤَدِّبَthe disciplinarian لاdoes not يُصادِفُfind طاعَةًobedience
حَتّىuntil يَراهُthey see him القَومُthe people مِمَّنamong those who يَعقِلُreason
A disciplinarian will find no obedience
until the people see that he is reasonable.
أَرَأَيتَhave you seen ماwhat صَنَعَdid الَّذينَthose whom زَعَمتَهُمyou claimed
لاnot يَجرُأونَthey dare عَلَيكَagainst you ساعَةَthe moment تُقبِلُyou approach
Have you seen what those people did—the ones you claimed
would not dare oppose you—the moment you approached?
أَخَذَتكَcaught you بَينَbetween المَوكِبَينِthe two processions نِعالُهُمtheir sandals
وَالجُندُwhile the soldiers يَنظُرُwatch وَالصَوافِنُand the poised steeds تَصهلُneigh
Their sandals caught you between the two processions,
while the soldiers watched and the poised steeds neighed.
وَرَدَتكَcame upon you أَرسالاًin companies تَطوفُcircling ظِماؤُهاtheir thirsty ones
بِدَمِfrom the blood of الجَبينِthe brow تُعَلُّdrink freely مِنهُfrom it وَتُنهَلُand drink deeply
They came upon you in companies, their thirsty ones circling,
drinking freely and deeply from the blood of your brow.
صَدَرتyou returned تُحَدِّثُspeaking عَنabout جَوانِبِthe flanks of صَخرَةٍa rock
تَهفوrecoil القُوىthe forces عَنهاfrom it وَيَنبوand glances off المِعوَلُthe pickaxe
You returned speaking of the flanks of a rock
from which strength recoils and the pickaxe glances off—
صَمّاءَsolid لَوif قُذِفَwere struck الزَمانُTime بِمِثلِهاwith its like
باتَتwould become overnight جَوانِبُهُits sides العُلىthe lofty تَتَهَيَّلُcollapsing
a solid rock: if Time itself were struck with its like,
Time’s lofty sides would crumble overnight.
مَولايَmy lord إِنَّindeed مِنَin الأناةِdeliberation لَجُنَّةًsurely a shield
يُرمىis struck العدوُّthe enemy بِهاwith it وَيُحمىand is protected المَقتَلُthe vulnerable spot
My lord, there is surely a shield in deliberation:
with it the enemy is struck and the vulnerable spot protected.
وَالحَقُّand truth ماis what شَرَعَordained الهُداةُthe guides فَماso what عَسىcould
يَتَطَلَّبُseek الغاويthe wayward وَيَبغيand desire المُبطِلُthe falsifier
Truth is what the guides have ordained; what, then, could
the wayward seek or the champion of falsehood desire?
إِنّيindeed, I نَصَحتُgave counsel وَلاتَbut it is no longer حينَa time نَصيحَةٍfor counsel
وَأَرىand I see المُضَلَّلَthe deluded man بِالمَلامَةِwith blame يَعجِلُhastening
Indeed, I gave counsel—but the time for counsel is past,
and I see the deluded man hastening to cast blame.
كُنbe كَيفَhowever شِئتَyou wish فَلَوyet even if هَمَمتَyou resolved بِتَوبَةٍto repent
لَثَناكَwould turn you back عَمّاfrom what رُمتَyou sought بابٌa door مُقفَلُclosed
Be as you wish; even if you resolved to repent,
a closed door would turn you back from what you sought.
فِرعَونُPharaoh آمَنَbelieved حينَwhen حُمَّbecame inevitable قَضاؤُهُhis doom
وَجَرىand surged بِمَهلَكِهِto his destruction العُبابُthe flood المُرسَلُunleashed
Pharaoh believed only when his doom became inevitable,
and the unleashed flood swept him to destruction.
أَتَرىdo you think القُبولَacceptance أَتاهُcame to him فيin إيمانِهِhis faith
أَمor أَنتَyou تَعلَمُknow أَنَّهُthat it لاnot يُقبَلُis accepted
Do you think his faith brought him acceptance,
or do you know that it is not accepted?
آتاكَbrought you أَعيانُthe notables of المَدينَةِthe city نُصحَهُمtheir counsel
وَنَهاكَand warned you عالِمُهاits scholar الأَبَرُّthe most righteous الأَمثَلُthe most exemplary
The city’s notables brought you their counsel,
and its most righteous, exemplary scholar warned you.
فَزَعَمتَهُمso you called them فَوقَupon المَقاعِدِthe benches نِسوَةًwomen
وَسَفِهتَand you acted foolishly إِذwhen حَلُمواthey showed forbearance وَعَفَّand remained dignified المَحفَلُthe assembly
Yet you called them women sitting upon the benches,
and acted foolishly when they showed restraint and the assembly kept its dignity.
