    O army, strolling in triumph,

through the crowds, self-admiring and swaggering,

on the day the defenders were absent and Egypt cried for help,

    calling upon men and heroes:

did you kill mighty armored warriors in battle,

or did you kill women and children?

Give the oppressors redress, O state of al-Faruq,

against us, and teach the ignorant.

    Teach us life—how to endure

it—and safeguard lives and allotted lifespans.

Lessen the killing; we are already exhausted,

and have encountered horrors in your shade.

Withdraw your beloved shade from us,

and make it a punishment and a deterrent.

Woe to you! Our ease of life has lasted so long

that we have died of tedium and boredom.

Give our souls no more of a bliss

that has brought their weary ones more suffering and ruin.

We have no love for gifts we draw from

you, nor do we seek largesse at your hands.

Curb your generosity, and restore to us

what you plundered by force and treachery.

    ما رَضينا لَكُم عَلى الدَهرِ حالا

    We remember nothing good to your credit;

we have never, through all time, approved of your conduct.

We remember the rule as unjust: we saw

no justice in it, nor found moderation.

We remember that era as evil: we knew

neither freedom nor independence in it.

    فَاِذكُروا عَهدَكُم وَشُدّوا الرِحالا

    We remember evil and affliction, all of it;

so remember your pledge, and saddle up to leave.

Stud the crown with fidelity, and adorn

its glory and majesty with the jewels of truth.

Do not spill the blood of the weak upon it,

and see how it has streamed down from atop the crown.

Honor the crown, for if you refuse,

it will grow in disgrace and debasement among us.

Your occupation has lasted so long that we thought

the Day of Reckoning was called 'occupation.'

God has fulfilled His promise, so await it—

an assault that will overwhelm the Cross in battle.

Lives will be forfeit on either side of it,

and conquests will march swiftly through it.

Is there any escape from God, or deliverance,

when He drives forward His troops and squadrons?

He bars the land and seas to you,

and shows you His combat and His stratagems.

Such is the consequence of harm, so do not deny it.

Your day has come, so taste the dire consequences.
