أَمشيI walk عَلىin خَوفٍfear وَطولِand prolonged تَلَفُّتٍlooking about
فَإِذاso when جَلَستُI sit خَشيتُI fear شَرَّthe harm of المَجلِسِthe sitting-place
I walk in fear, forever looking about,
I walk in fear and with much apprehension,
and when I sit, I fear the harm that place holds.
Whenever I sit, I dread the evils of the gathering,
وَإِذاand when ثُويتُI stay بِمَنزِليat my home أَلفَيتَنيyou find me
مَيتَlifeless المَفاصِلِthe joints مُحرَجُconstricted المُتَنَفَّسِthe breathing
And when I stay at home, you find me
And when I retire to my abode, I find myself
with lifeless joints and constricted breathing.
Dead in my joints, stifled in breath,
ياO هَمَّanguish of قَلبيmy heart مِنfrom حَياةٍa life مُرَّةٍbitter
جَمَعَhas gathered الزَمانُtime بِهاin it صُنوفَkinds of الأَبؤُسِmisery
Oh, my heart's anguish at a bitter life
O sorrow in my heart from a bitter life
in which time has gathered every kind of misery!
In which time has gathered all kinds of misery,
أُزجيI get through طِوالَlong stretches of هُمومِهاits worries بِبَقِيَّةٍwith a remnant
لِلصَبرِof patience أَحسَبُهاI deem it نُفاضَةَlast scraps of مُفلِسِa bankrupt person
I get through its long stretches of worry with a remnant
I will bear its concerns for a while
of patience, which I deem a bankrupt's last scraps.
As if bearing the bankruptcy of patience,
وَلَقَدand indeed عَلِمتُI have learned وَإِنand though تَكاءَدَنيhas weighed heavily on me الأَسىgrief
أنَّthat الكَريمَthe noble person عَلىin the face of الحَوادِثِcalamities يَأتَسيfinds consolation
And I have learned, though grief weighs heavily on me,
And I know, though sorrow has tired me,
that a noble person finds consolation in the face of calamities.
That the noble one shows grace in adversity.
