وماand how أضلَّastray الأُلَىthose who أمْسَواbecame لهto him تَبَعاfollowers
Sons of Hanifa, how wretched Musaylima is!
O tribe of Hanifa, how wretched is Musaylimah!
And how astray are those who became his followers!
How lost are those misguided ones who became his followers!
جئتمyou came بهِwith him فيin ثيابٍgarments مِلؤُهاtheir fill دَنَسٌfilth

You brought him in garments filled with filth,
You brought him in garments filled with filth
which almost spit him out in horror at what he had done.
That almost spill out from the enormity of his misdeeds.
تَرمِيflings away بهhim الأرضُthe earth شيطاناًas a devil وتَقذِفُهand casts him out
رِجْساًas an abomination مُغَطَّىveiled وشرّاًand an evil جاءَcame مُبتدعاnewly contrived
The earth flings him away as a devil and casts him out
The earth casts him out as a devil and rejects him
as a veiled abomination and an evil that came newly contrived.
As a filthy evil that came as an innovator.
ياoh وَيْلَهُwoe to him إذwhen تُرِيهshows him النَّجمَthe star فيin يدِهِhis hand

Woe to him, when it shows him the star in his hand—
Woe to him when the star in his hand shows him
a deluded soul that stirred his greed.
A misguided soul that greedily desired him.
رَامhe sought النُبوَّةَprophethood شَطْرٌhalf للذيfor the one who اجتمعتwas gathered
فيهِin him وشطرٌand half لهfor him ياoh سوءَthe vileness of ماwhat اخترعاhe devised
He sought prophethood: half for the one it had gathered
He sought prophethood, with half for the one
in, and half for himself—how vile what he devised!
In whom it was gathered, and half for himself—what evil he devised!
قالsaid النبيُّthe Prophet لهto him لوif جِئتَyou came تسألُنيasking me
هذاthis العَسيبَpalm stalk الذيwhich عانيتَyou concerned yourself with لامْتنَعَاit would be withheld
The Prophet said to him, “If you came to ask me
The Prophet said to him, “If you had come to ask me
for this palm stalk you concerned yourself with, it would be withheld.
For this position which you coveted, I would have refused.”
أناI النبيُّthe Prophet وماand not أمرِيmy charge بِمُشْتَرَكٍshared
فَاعْصِso disobey الهَوىdesire وَارْتَدِعْand desist إنif كنتَyou are مُرتدِعاone who desists
I am the Prophet, and my charge is not shared;
“I am the Prophet, and my affair allows no partnership.
so resist desire and desist, if you can desist.”
So deny desire and turn back, if you can turn back.”
أضلَّهُled him astray غيهبٌdarkness للجهلِof ignorance مُرتَكِمٌdensely piled
أحاطenveloped بالقومِthe people حيناًfor a time ثُمَّتَthen انْقَشَعاdispersed
A dense darkness of ignorance led him astray;
Lost in the darkness of accumulated ignorance,
it enveloped the people for a time, then cleared away.
For a time he surrounded the people, then it dispersed.
خَفُّواthey hastened إلىto الحقِّthe truth يرتادونَseeking مَنْبَتَهُits place of growth
وليسand there is not كالحقِّlike the truth مُرتاداًa sought-out destination ومُنتَجَعَاand a pasture
They hastened to the truth, seeking where it grows,
They inclined to the truth, seeking out its origin,
and no destination or pasture is like the truth.
And nothing is sought like the truth, to which one returns.

And he came amid blind turmoil, made alluring
And he came in blind sedition, adorned for him
to him by delusion and poor judgment, and so he was deceived.
By delusion and evil opinion, so he was deceived.
إنّindeed الفسادَcorruption جميعاًall of it والضّلالَand misguidance معاًtogether

Indeed, all corruption and misguidance together
Indeed all corruption and misguidance together
returned to al-Yamama in his hide.
Returned to Al-Yamamah in his hides.

فهلso, did ...? رَأوْاthey saw مِثلَهُhis like منamong كاذبٍa liar بَرَعاwho excelled
He snatched people up, leading them astray and lying to them;
He took the people, misleading and lying to them—
so have they seen his like among accomplished liars?
Did they ever see one skilled in lying like him?
يقولُhe says إنّthat رسولَthe Messenger of اللهِGod أشْرَكهُmade him a partner
فيin الأمرِthe charge يَحمِلُhe carries شطراًhalf منهof it فَاضْطَلعاso he undertook it
He says that God's Messenger made him a partner
He says the Messenger of God made him
in the charge, bearing half of it, and so he undertook it.
His partner in command, bearing half of it.
ورَاحَand he began يدعوcalling إلىto دينٍa religion يُزيِّنهُadorns it

أشقَىmost wretched الدُّعاةِthe preachers جميعاًall of them مَنthe one who إليهِto it دَعاcalled
And he went on calling to a religion made alluring
And he went about calling to a religion he adorned,
by the most wretched of all preachers—the one who called to it.
The most wretched of all those who called to it.
ألغَىhe abolished الصّلاةَprayer وأعطىand gave النَّاسَthe people بُغْيَتَهُمْtheir desire
مِنَof الزِّناfornication ومنand of السُّمِّpoison الذُّعافِlethal مَعاtogether
He abolished prayer and gave the people what they craved:
He abolished the prayer and gave people their desires
fornication and deadly poison together.
Of adultery and festering poisons together.
دِينُa religion of الفجورِdebauchery ومَكروهِand odious الأمورِdeeds ألاtake heed

لاmay ... not باركَbless اللّهُGod فيin الدّينِthe religion الذيwhich شَرَعاhe ordained
A religion of debauchery and odious deeds—indeed,
The religion of immorality and hated things! No,
may God not bless the religion he ordained!
God did not bless the religion he legislated.
لَوif راحَwent about صاحِبُهits proponent يرميhurling بهit جَبَلاًa mountain

If its proponent were to hurl it against a mountain
If he went throwing it at a mountain,
of virtue, towering above the mountains, it would split asunder.
It would tower over mountains in nobility and split apart!
ماwhat are الطاحناتُthe grinders وتاءاتand tāʾ letters يُردِّدُهاhe repeats them

لاmay ... not كانَhe exist مِنsuch a فاجرٍsinner لاnot يَعرِفُhe knows الوَرَعاpious restraint

What are “the grinders” and the tāʾs he repeats?
What are “grinding mills” and “T’s” that he repeats?
May he cease to be—a sinner who knows no pious restraint!
Only one depraved, knowing no piety would say this.
صبراًpatience حنيفةُHanifa إنّindeed اللهَGod قاتِلُهُhis slayer

Patience, Hanifa: surely God will slay him,
Patience, O Hanifa! God is his killer,
and there is no averting God's decree if it comes to pass.
And God's command, when it comes, cannot be rejected.
