Abu al-Fadl, come forward and raise your voice in thanks.
O Abul Fadl, come closer and raise your voice in gratitude,
For that is God's bounty, which He bestowed abundantly.
For that is Allah's immense grace which He has generously bestowed.

You stayed watching for the caravan, burning with thirst and yearning.
You stood guarding the caravan, always alert and vigilant,
Joy be yours: this caravan has come to visit you.
Congratulations - for this caravan has come to visit you.

Congratulations, for you have been granted all that you sought,
and soon were greeted by a bird of good fortune.
And found success and good fortune nearby.

When seeking the caravan, wherever you see the light of prophethood shining bright,
It is where you see the light of prophethood dazzling.
O Abul Fadl come closer, and make the most of this blessed time.

Abu al-Fadl, come and fulfill this longing
For yourself, to cure an ailment simmering within.
of your soul, healing a sickness lodged within you.

A beloved has gone far, folding away the years, and a lover
Bearing harm upon harm in His path,
wrestles with longing raging between his ribs.
Content and turning a blind eye for God's sake.

He suffers harm upon harm for his sake,
Allah be with you O Abbas, here is Muhammad,
yet is content and lowers his eyelid, patient for God's sake.
Greet him well and speak what you wish heartily and openly.

God be with you, Abbas! Here is Muhammad.
He came after dragging on many years in migration,
Greet him, and be as happy in soul and mind as you wish.
Dragging behind him caravans and armies.

He came after dragging through the years as an emigrant,
When he saw you, his eyes welled up,
drawing detachments and armies behind him.
As greetings poured from him, fresh flowers to welcome you.

He saw you; his eye was gladdened, and there flowed together
A scent of God's mercy lingers with you two until today,
his greetings, meeting you radiant and fresh.
Your place fragrant with it since that time.

In Mecca, you stood by the weak,
your place together remains fragrant with it to this day.
Turning away harm and nurturing bonds.

You stayed to watch over the oppressed in Mecca,
When they panicked under injustice, you were their shelter,
warding harm from them and tending the bonds of kinship.
And when the loyal ones lacked support, you aided them.

When oppression alarmed them, you were their refuge;
The disbelievers thought you one of them, but in truth,
and if helpers were lacking, they found you a helper.
You intended something else - you were never an unbeliever.

And deceived them about it, until it prevailed.

and outwitted them on its behalf, so it became ascendant.

Supplying the Messenger of Allah with letters full
revealing their hidden affairs and exposing their inmost secrets.
Of their news, traversing the vast desert.

You supplied God's Messenger with letters laden
A courier, when couriers give up from fatigue,
with news of them, traveling across the mountain passes.
Who continues steadfastly in his mission without tiring.

A courier that, when the post halted from weariness,
And when you sought permission to visit him,
pressed on tirelessly at its task, in unbroken succession.
He refused - for he and his love did not want you as a neighbor.

And said: "Wait, my uncle, you are a source of hope
he refused, though his desire was to see you as his neighbor.
For an appointment God will bring at the end."

the last of those who come to us as emigrants.”
Ease after hardship - blessed are those who witness!

It is God—look, Abu al-Fadl, at what He has decreed:
The gloomy clouds of worries have cleared,
ease after hardship. Blessed be you as you behold it.
And the faces of life are brightly joyful.
تجلَّتْcleared away دَياجيرُthe glooms of الهُمومِcares ذَميمةًhateful

وأضحتْ وجوهُ العيشِ بِيضاً سَوافِرا
The hateful glooms of sorrow have lifted,
Oh, how many days you tasted the bitterness
and the faces of life have become white and unveiled.
Of what the idolaters sowed, crushing sorrows!
ألاah رُبَّmany a يومٍday ذُقْتَyou tasted منfrom سُوءِthe evil of ماwhat جَنَىwrought

Ah, how many a day you tasted, from the evil wrought
And nights, when the coward was terrified and anxious,
by the polytheists that day, what rends the stout cords!
You spent sleepless, your mind clouded in gloom.

And many a terrifying night, like a coward's panic,
As was your way, when they said Muhammad was killed,
you passed through its darkness, gloomy of mind and wakeful.
And those mocking brought them the false news.
كَدَأْبِكَas was your wont إذwhen قالواthey said أًصيبَwas struck down مُحَمَّدٌMuhammad

وقد جاءَهم بالزُّورِ مَن كان سَاخِرا
As was your wont when they said, “Muhammad has been struck down!”
But when you verified the truth, you set out lively
and a mocker had brought them this falsehood.
To kiss the one visiting you, bringing good tidings.

When you learned the truth, you rose to your full height,
And you released him free and unharmed, though he
kissing the one who came to you bringing glad tidings.
Remained in dear dignity that amazes noble souls.

You sent him away free and unfettered, and indeed he
You set out light and quick on your feet, though never before
enjoyed an honor beyond the reach of freeborn souls.
Were you able to do the likes of this feat.

What pleased the Messenger pleased you, and any harm
capable of such a feat before that.
Aimed at him, you took upon yourself as harmful.

You guided Abu Sufyan to regret his soul
harm befell him, you found hurtful to yourself.
And dislike remaining astray for eternity.
هَدَيْتَyou guided أباfather of سُفيانَSufyan تَرحَمُshowing mercy to نَفسَهُhis soul

وَتَكرَهُ أن يَبْقَى مَدَى الدّهرِ حائرا
You guided Abu Sufyan, showing mercy to his soul,
You brought him, while the army lay waiting in the night
and hating that he should remain bewildered for all time.
Preparing for battle, sharpening swords.
وَجِئْتَand you came بِهِwith him والجندُand the troops باللّيلِby night رَاصِدٌkeeping watch

يُقَلِّبُ للحربِ الرِّقاقَ البواتِرا
You brought him while the troops stood watch by night,
So he became Muslim, pleasing Allah after refusal,
turning the slender, keen-cutting blades for war.
And were it not for you, he would not have left his denial.
فأسلمَso he embraced Islam يُرضِيpleasing اللَّهَGod منfrom بَعدِafter نَفْرَةٍaversion

ولولاكَ لم يبرحْ عن الحقِّ نافرا
So he embraced Islam, pleasing God, after his aversion;
In Ibn Hizam and Ibn Warqa there is evidence
and but for you, he would have remained averse to the truth.
Of your merit, for those who remember.

In Ibn Hizam and Ibn Warqa there is testimony
Three pillars you turned their hearts
to the merit that is yours, for anyone who remembers.
To Allah, enlivening them and hoping for their fate.
ثلاثةُthree أقطابٍleading figures صَرَفتَyou turned قُلوبَهُمtheir hearts

Three leading figures whose hearts you turned
Had they refused, no deterrent would prevent war
toward God, giving them life and hoping for good outcomes.
Or wrest away its claws and fangs.
ولوand if أعرضواthey turned away لمnot يَرْدَعِwould check الحربُwar رَادِعٌa restrainer

ولمand not يَنتزِعْwould tear out أنيابَهَاits fangs والأظافراand the claws
ولم يَنتزِعْ أنيابَهَا والأظافرا
Had they turned away, no restrainer would have checked the war
You saved blood which, if freed,
or torn out its fangs and claws.
Would have flowed under the banners of invaders.

You spared blood that, had it been given free course,
And so Quraysh were left with no remnants,
would have surged beneath the invaders' banners.
And that pride they were used to was ruined.
فأمسَتْthen would become قُرَيْشٌQuraysh ماnot لهاfor it منany بَقِيَّةٍremnant

Then Quraysh would have had no remnant left,
With your good fortune, O Uncle of the Messenger,
and the glory it had known would have faded away.
Helping hands came one after another, which Muslims see as treasures.

Through your blessing, uncle of the Messenger, there followed
And you were before, doing good,
deeds of kindness that Muslims regard as treasures.
Propping up ancestral ties that had fallen.

Great, relied on by Quraysh when facing
who, through his bounty, set stumbling fortunes upright.
Affairs that frighten, fearing ruin.

A great man, Quraysh looked to you for relief from its plight,
When you serve pilgrims water, you are a master
when alarmed by events, fearing reversals of fortune.
Teaching the masters of men noble qualities.

And when you give water to the pilgrims, you are indeed a lord
Uthman deserves one rule, and Malik another -
who teaches the lords of men the ways of glory.
The rule of one who gives and is most generous.
لعُثْمَانَto Uthman ماwhat يَرْضَىpleases him ومالكَand you have nothing غَيرُهاother than it

ولايَةُ من يُعطِي وَيبذلُ كابرا
Uthman has what pleases him; yours is nothing but
One who forcibly takes the reins
the stewardship of one who gives and bestows, a noble elder.
Is not like one who gently takes the reins.

And one who comes to the grove to plant is not
I am forbidden satisfaction if I criticize Uthman - he
like one who comes to the grove to bend its branches.
Follows the way of victors, defying competitors.

follows a mighty tradition that defeats any rival.
With which he establishes the rituals of Allah's faith.

He is stingy in unlocking the doors of corruption,
in which he upholds the rites of God's religion.
And sees glory in this through time eternal.

The trust of the Lord of the House was not given to a traitor
O Abul Fadl, this is what Muhammad loved -
who seeks worldly gain through it, nor granted to an evildoer.
You have succeeded, your arrow still strikes its target.

Abu al-Fadl, this is what Muhammad desired;
If Allah makes the lands and its people thirsty,
you have won it—may your arrow never cease to triumph.
It is in your name that He sends down torrential rain.
إذاwhen أظمأmakes thirsty اللَّهُGod البلادَthe lands وأهلَهَاand their people

مَناقِبَ ذِكراها تَهُزُّ المنابرا
By my life, you have surely left behind, without a rival,
I speak truly - if I forgot your rights
virtues whose remembrance makes the pulpits tremble.
Despite my abilities, I would find no excuse.
صَدقتُكَI tell you truly إنّيindeed I لوif تَنَاسَيْتُI forgot حَقَّهاwhat is due to them
صَدقتُكَ إنّي لو تَنَاسَيْتُ حَقَّها
علىdespite ماwhat عَنانِيtroubled me لمnot أَجِدْI would find لِيَfor myself عاذراone to excuse me
على ما عَنانِي لم أَجِدْ لِيَ عاذرا
I tell you truly: if I forgot what is due to them,
Aid me, my Lord, with a breath from You, and guide me
despite all that has troubled me, I would find no one to excuse me.
Your way - if among people I stray as a poet.
أعِنِّيhelp me بروحٍwith a spirit منكَfrom You ياO ربِّmy Lord واهدِنيand guide me
أعِنِّي بروحٍ منكَ يا ربِّ واهدِني
سَبيلَكَYour path إنْif أضللتَYou led astray فيamong النّاسِpeople شاعراa poet
سَبيلَكَ إنْ أضللتَ في النّاسِ شاعرا
Help me with a spirit from You, my Lord, and guide me
I called you to Islam - uphold its glory
to Your path, if You have led a poet astray among people.
And attain from it what time has spread.
دَعوتُكَI called upon You للإسلامِfor Islam أُمْسِكُI preserve مَجْدَهْits glory
دَعوتُكَ للإسلامِ أُمْسِكُ مَجْدَهْ
وأُدرِكُand I recover منهof it ماwhat طَوَىfolded away الدّهرُtime ناشراunfolding
وأُدرِكُ منه ما طَوَى الدّهرُ ناشرا
I called upon You for Islam, to preserve its glory
and reclaim from it what time folded away, unfurling it.
