O Minister of Security, the people have died of fear,

And Egypt has clamored around you in complaint.

Zayd gave an account, and Amr passed it on from him,

So neither the report nor the account was true.

By your Lord, what do you reveal and conceal?

And, in your view, is there any end to this affair?

By what plan, and with which party,

Do you intend to wrong us and inflict injury?

    فَماذا تَبتَغي وَلِأَيِّ غايَهْ

    You raced backward without a rein;

So what do you seek, and to what end?

O Minister of Security, Egypt indeed has a right,

And care is indeed the hallmark of a free man.

Do you hate her becoming sovereign, and seeing her

In the position of one freed from guardianship?

Do you fear humiliation—woe to you!—among her sons,

When a banner of glory is raised in her?

Well-wishers urged you to act deliberately,

And those with knowledge taught you what is right.

Is there no prudence to shield against harm?

For prudence is the source of protection.

And no one on earth is happier than a loyal man,

True to his pledge, trusted to commit no wrong,

Who sees the world through the eye of a noble youth,

Lofty of soul, heaping scorn upon it,

And knows that God's promise is true,

And that rule and authority belong to Him.

I have seen man ride into every hardship,

And hope that providence will shade him.

I think the people expect no hereafter,

Nor fear the outcome of going astray,

Nor accept the religion of truth as their religion,

Even if the guides came with every sign.

The darkness will split open after a while,

Revealing the ideal, and blindness will lift.

When sinners repent of their sins,

Then it is enough for you to repent of the protectorate.
