That cause—does it have an appointed time?
That cause—does it have an appointed time?
The cause requires that its struggle be long.
The cause requires that the struggle be long.

How many causes nations have, before whose fulfillment
centuries pass and ages expire.
Centuries pass and ages run their course!

Has any goal ever yielded to stagnant resolve,
Has any goal yielded to dormant resolve,
or any wish come true for weak nations?
Or any wish come true for feeble nations?

الحقُّ عَزمٌ صادقٌ وجلادُ
Never suppose that right is a helpless man’s cry;
Do not think justice a helpless man's cry;
right is sincere resolve and endurance in combat.
Justice is earnest resolve and combat.

Guard your inviolable honor, Palestine, and strive;
Defend all you hold sacred, Palestine, and struggle;
life has no pillar but struggle.
Life has no support but struggle.

Guard your honor: this is, for you, a stand
Guard what you hold sacred: this is your stand,
decisive—a day of yours that shall not return.
A decisive one, and a day of yours that will not return.

It is the last of days: either a dawn
It is the last of days: either a rising
rising high, or a death-ground and mourning.
On high, or a fatal fall and mourning.

Calamities have overwhelmed you: nothing blazing

Dies down, and no rebel submits.

Events have ravaged the life within you;
And calamities have gnawed at the life within you—
a hundred harsh trials have swept through it and over you.
A hundred have passed through it, grievous for you.

Earning stands idle and the marketplaces are deserted;
Earning has been halted, and the shops cast off;
living is straitened, and life lies stagnant.
So living is straitened, and life lies stagnant.

Blessed is the struggle of one who will not yield his right—
Noble is struggle for one who jealously guards his right—
if only the struggling people had provisions.
If only the struggling people had provisions!

To defend the thickets, suffering is borne;
In defense of the thickets, suffering is borne,
for their sake lions hunger, and lions feed their fill.
And for their sake the lions hunger and eat their fill.

The aspirations of soaring eagles are tireless,
The resolve of soaring eagles is tireless,
and the claws of angry lions are sharp steel.
And the claws of angry lions are sharp.

Arabs—when angered by a sudden crisis,
Arabs—when angered by some sudden event,
the scabbards rage against the gleaming blades of the wrathful.
The scabbards rage against the bright sword-edges.

Fathers start in terror within their graves,
And fathers startle in their graves,
and forefathers look up in alarm.
And forefathers peer out in their dread.

The noble, sleek steeds surge and charge forward,
And the sleek, noble steeds are roused, and onward come
and forms of death approach beyond all counting.
Forms of death beyond all counting.

were asked for a mighty ransom and gave freely.
Were asked for a great sacrifice, and gave generously.

Give freely, guardians of Jerusalem: among your noble men
Be generous, defenders of Jerusalem: your noble ones have no
there is no stinginess, nor can noble deeds be exhausted.
Stinginess, nor do noble deeds have an end.

Drive the enemy from the land and fight;
Drive the enemy from the land, and fight;
for driving the enemy from the land is what is sought.
Indeed, the enemy is driven from the land.

In defending justice by tyranny or despotism.

Those treasures—Islam refuses to allow

Their precious ones to be harmed, and so does the tongue of ḍād.

Truly, we remember them in anguish and alarm,
Indeed, we remember them, distraught and panic-stricken,
and our hearts spend the night trembling around them.
So hearts spend the night shuddering around them.

sister Egypt, too, is all anguish and sleeplessness.
Your sister Egypt is burning grief and sleepless vigil.

Would that those who laid so many snares
had asked how the phoenix could be caught.
Had asked about the phoenix: how can it be caught?

O people, that is a law never enacted

Before by any slaughterer or executioner.

Balfour imposed it and incurred its sin;
oppression is wholly sin and corruption.
And oppression is all sin and corruption.

Is a people being sold, or lifeless matter?

Worst of all creatures is he who governs yet does not see

That statesmanship is wisdom and sound judgment.

Do not condemn the blood that mingles on the battlefields;
Do not think it strange that blood mingles on fields of death;
for by such means men rose to greatness.
For through such things men have attained mastery.
