أَبَوْاthey refused أنto يقعدواstay behind والجيشُwhile the army يُزجَىis urged onward
فَيُوشِكُso it is on the verge أنto يكونَbe لهfor it انْطِلاقُa departure
They refused to stay behind while the army was urged onward,
They refused to sit while the army was being sacrificed,
And was about to set forth.
So its launch was nearing,
وليسand there is not لهمfor them سِوَىanything but القُرآنِthe Qur’an يُتلَىbeing recited
فلاso no خَيْلٌhorses ولاand no إبلٌcamels تُساقُare driven
They had nothing but the recited Qur’an—
And they had nothing but the Quran being recited.
No horses, nor camels to be driven.
No horses or camels were being led.
فَلاذواso they sought refuge بالنبيِّwith the Prophet وناشدُوهand implored him
لِيَحْمِلَهُمْto give them mounts فَضاقَso he was distressed بهمon their account وضاقواand they were distressed
So they sought refuge with the Prophet and implored him
So they sought refuge in the Prophet and implored him
To give them mounts; he was distressed for them, and they were distressed.
To carry them, but he was too troubled and they were restricted.
تَوَلَّوْاthey turned away تَسْتَهِلُّstream forth علىupon لِحاهُمْtheir beards
دُموعٌtears مِلءَfilling أعينهِمtheir eyes تُراقُare shed
They turned away; down their beards streamed
They turned away with tears flowing down their cheeks,
Tears pouring from their brimming eyes.
Tears filling their eyes and dripping down.
أتُعْوِزُهُمْdo they fail them? لَدَىduring الزَّحفِthe advance المطاياthe mounts
ويَسْبِقُهمand outstrip them إلىto اللهِGod الرِّفاقُthe companions
Would mounts fail them in the advance,
Do they lack the horses during the march
While their companions outstripped them on the way to God?
While the caravan precedes them to God?
فَرَقَّso took pity لهمon them منamong الغازِينَthe warriors قَومٌa group of men
رُمُواthey were struck مِنهمfrom them بخطبٍby a calamity لاnot يُطاقُcan be endured
Then some of the warriors took pity on them,
So a group of fighters cast them off,
Struck by their plight, too grievous to bear.
Shooting them with incessant arrows.
وَجَاءَواand they came بالرَّواحِلِwith riding camels فاستراحواso they found relief
مِنَfrom الهمِّthe distress المُبرِّحِagonizing واسْتفاقواand recovered
And they brought riding camels, so the men found relief
And they brought the she-camels, so they got rest
From their agonizing distress, and revived.
From the depressing worries and regained consciousness.
أمَنْis one whom يَهديهِguides him إيمانُfaith وَتَقْوىًand piety
كمنlike one whom يُردِيهbrings him to ruin غِشٌّdeceit أوor نِفاقُhypocrisy
Is one guided by faith and piety
Can one guided by faith and piety
Like one whom deceit or hypocrisy brings to ruin?
Be like one misled by deceit or hypocrisy?
