People have gone astray until there is neither right judgment nor guidance.

And they have strayed: no messengers are obeyed, nor troops.

If you seek counsel concerning human souls,

Then you cannot do without a sword to consult.

And indeed, if you delve deeply into criticizing them, you reach

The utmost limit of your life, yet the criticism does not end.

And I kept counting the world's sins,

Until my resolve reached its limit and the counting ended.

I was plagued by one whose ears rebukes rend,

Yet he rebels; exhortations strike him, and he grows fiercer.

The misguided among people speak of glory and eminence,

Yet there is no eminence, as I see it, nor glory.

I see people as equals, and no man has glory

Unless he is like Time, without a peer.

By that I judge both friend and foe,

And one like me knows what enmity and affection are.

    فَما غَرَّني حُبٌّ وَلا هاجَني حِقدُ

    People multiplied around me, loving and resentful;

Yet no love deceived me, nor did hatred provoke me.

Sons of the Nile, indeed I see no peerless man there,

Nor do I claim to be its peerless poet.

Nor will the edifice of glory among you stand

Through the ages while morals fall and crumble.

It is reproach enough for Time, sons of the Nile, that it

Is an arena of life for the master, or a grave.

    فَلا تعتبُوا حَتّى يَدومَ لَكُم عَهدُ

    You reproached the days, though they are as they have always been;

So do not reproach them until a pledge of yours endures.

And if the lion leaps, rushing after prey,

Do not marvel: what lion does not give chase?

Nor, before Dahis, were they taken up for sport:

The slender, keen blades and the marked, sleek steeds.

    فَلا مَجدَ حَتّى يَصدُقَ العَزمُ وَالجِدُّ

    Sons of the Nile, be earnest in your pursuits, and be sincere;

For there is no glory until resolve and striving are true.

It is such martial might that the tawny lion bolts,

And the stalwart man forgets his very soul.

We shall ride her, terrifying, as she twists her rein,

And hurl her forth, raging, with no repelling her.

And her dust need only rise

For every horizon to turn dust-dark and blackened.
