ʿUyaynah, what are you doing—woe to you?
Uyainah, what are you doing, alas!
And what is that host you are gathering?
What is this army you are amassing?
رُوَيْدَكَtake your time هلcan يغزوraid المدينةَMedina حانِقٌa wrathful man
ويطمعُand yearns فيهاfor it ياO عُيينَةُʿUyaynah طامِعُa covetous man
Take your time! Can a wrathful man raid Medina,
Restrain yourself! Does an enraged one invade the city
and can a covetous man covet it, ʿUyaynah?
And in it, O Uyainah, have ambition?
هيit الصّخرةُthe rock العظمىthe mighty فلاso neither البأسُmartial might نافعٌavailing
إذاwhen جِئتَyou come تَبغيهاseeking it ولاnor السّيفُthe sword قاطِعُcutting
It is the mighty rock: neither martial strength avails
It is the mighty rock; so neither is harm useful
when you come seeking it, nor does the sword cut.
If you come seeking it, nor is the sword cutting.

From God's majesty it has an impregnable fortress
It has, by God's majesty, an impregnable fortress
that wards off harm from it, and a defending army.
Which deflects harm from it and an army defending.
وفيهاand within it رسولُthe Messenger of اللهِGod والنَّفَرُand the band of men الأُلىwho

And within it are God's Messenger and the band of men
In it is Allah's Messenger and the foremost vanguard
for whom the terrors of battle are a light matter.
To whom terrors are trivial if events turn fearsome.
إذاwhen وَرَدواthey enter الهيجاءَthe fray فالنّقعُthen the battle dust قاتمٌdark

When they enter the fray, the dust is dark,
When they encounter the melee, the striking is conclusive,
and if they return with their horses, victory gleams.
And if they advance on horseback, the victory gleams.
بَشيرُBashir بنُson of سعدٍSaʿd ياO عُيينَةُʿUyaynah قادِمٌcoming
فهلso will أنتَyou بالجمعِwith the host المضلَّلِmisguided راجِعُreturning
Bashir ibn Saʿd is coming, ʿUyaynah;
Bashir ibn Sa’d, O Uyainah, is arriving,
so will you turn back with the misguided host?
So are you retreating with your misguided army?
أتاكمreached you علىdespite بُعْدِthe distance to المَزَارِthe destination حَديثُهُnews of him

فلاso no قَلْبَheart إلاexcept واجفٌtrembling منهbecause of him جَازِعُterrified
News of him reached you, despite the distance,
News of him reached you from afar,
so every heart trembled, terrified of him.
And every heart quaked hearing of him.
فَرَرْتُمyou fled تُرِيْدونَyou seek النّجاةَescape وقدand already بَدَاappeared

You fled, seeking escape, as there loomed
You fled, seeking deliverance, and it became
before you, at his hands, a day of fearsome fighting and terror.
Clear to you from him a tremendously fierce day.
وغادرتمُand you abandoned الأنعامَthe livestock تَعْوِيhowling رُعاتهاtheir herdsmen
وتَندبُهاand lament them آثارُهاtheir tracks والمراتِعُand the pastures
And you abandoned the livestock, their herdsmen howling,
You abandoned the cattle, their herders wailing
and their tracks and pastures lamented them.
And their vestiges mourning them on the meadows.
فياso, oh لكَfor you منof نَهْبٍbooty تَوَلَّىfled حُماتُهُits defenders

Oh, what booty—its defenders fled,
What plunder turned away its protectors
and its herd came forward, driven along in succession!
And was driven off, its flock in succession!
وياand oh للأسِيرَيْنِfor the two captives اللذينwhom نَهاهماforbade them both

And oh, the two captives who were deterred
And the two captives who were dissuaded
from polytheism by a restraining admonisher from God's guidance!
From polytheism by a deterrent from Allah's guidance.
هُماthey both أسلماembraced Islam لماwhen بَدَاappeared الحقُّthe truth واضحاًclear
وللحقِّand truth has نورٌa light للعَمَايَةِthrough blindness صادعُcleaving
They both embraced Islam when the truth appeared clear,
They submitted when the truth became manifest,
and truth has a light that cleaves through blindness.
And for the truth there is a light penetrating the blindness.
أطاعاthey both obeyed رسولَthe Messenger of اللهِGod فَاهْتَدَيَاso they both found guidance بِهِthrough him
وماand not يَسْتَوِيare equal فيamong النّاسِpeople عاصٍa disobedient person وطائعُand an obedient person
They obeyed God's Messenger and so found guidance through him;
They obeyed Allah's Messenger, so were guided by him,
and among people, the disobedient and the obedient are not alike.
And the disobedient and obedient are not equal among people.
عُيَيْنَةُʿUyaynah منwhoever يَنْزَعْturns إلىtoward الرُّشْدِright guidance لاdoes not يَزَلْcease

ʿUyaynah, whoever turns toward right guidance remains
Uyainah, one who inclines toward righteousness continues
on its clear road—will you, then, turn toward it?
Upon insight from it. So are you one who withdraws?
