God is greatest! The calamity has grown grave, and there hold sway

Over us adversities; stratagems fail before them.

A war before which the heavenly spheres spend the night dazed,

Perplexed, with apprehension and dread accompanying them.

    Hurling crimson deaths, shrieking,

Filling the broad passes, rushing without respite.

Death's appointed hours scatter from around it, fleeing in fright,

They remain maddened by terror's thunderclaps.

Ah, the warriors, standing in defense of their homeland!

When a hero among them falls, another hero rises.

Ah, the martyr in the abode of war, surrounded

There by righteous angels and messengers!

Ah, the wounded man, fallen, with no bed for him

Save gore, and save the blazing fire!

Ah, the widows and orphans, weeping,

Lamenting hunger and keeping vigil at night in supplication!

Ah, the homeland, terrified in every quarter, in turmoil,

Fearing the assault of the people who have acted in ignorance!

Sons of al-Buhayra, this is your day: take

The loftiest positions, so that hope may be fulfilled.

Pour forth abundant gifts, and vie with one another

In noble deeds, for you are their copious rain.

We are indeed in a blind turmoil that has no

Likeness or equal in anything that came before it.

We amuse ourselves and play, while calamities encircle

Us, and death's driver hastens in our wake.

Far be it from my people, when their aid is hoped for,

To be miserly, or be reproached for what they have given.

I see abundant wealth in their coffers,

And I have never known them to be miserly when asked.

Does the wretched, destitute man give away his cloak,

While a wealthy man, whose life is lush, withholds his wealth?

O people, your wealth can indeed be replaced,

But your sovereignty can never be replaced.

Salute the two princes! May God bless their cavalcade,

Wherever it settles and wherever it journeys onward.

In Egypt they took the place of the two luminaries, so it does not

Stray from the paths of guidance, even if the roads arouse doubt.

The two pillars of the Caliphate, if its supports are shaken

By the tempests of calamity and a grievous event is feared.

Through deeds like theirs, peoples are saved when

Fate is decreed, and states defend their watering-place.

How fine the occasion in which those who act stand out,

And how fine the day when a man's worth is known!
