They come and go amid absurdities,
just as you knew them in times long past.

And the people do not grasp the true nature of affairs,
with misguided judgment and a blind heart.

Time has indeed laid bare its secrets,
and revealed the hidden, concealing nothing.

And wrathful messengers have come from God,
pouring torment upon the evildoer.

for dawn has become clear to the sleepers.

I marvel at a reckless man who has not repented
of shameful deeds, nor felt remorse.

Judgment Day rises among all humankind,
and appears in its greatest terror,

while some of us remain devoted to evil,
keeping up the clamor, and others circle round it.

يَهُزُّshakes السَماءَthe heavens إِلىto مَأثَمِa sin
We have made it a religion: from one sin
that shakes the heavens to another.
يَجودُgives generously الغَوِيُّthe misguided man بِمِلءِwith the fullness of اليَدَينِboth hands
إِذاwhen راحَhe goes فيin غَيِّهِhis error يَرتَميhurling himself
The misguided man gives with both hands full
when he plunges headlong into his error;
وَيَسأَلُهُand asks him اللَهُGod أَدنىthe smallest of القُروضِloans
فَيَأبىbut he refuses وَيَبخَلُand is stingy بِالدِرهَمِwith a dirham
yet God asks him for the smallest of loans,
but he refuses, begrudging a dirham.
وَشَرُّand the worst of البَرِيَّةِcreation ذوone possessing نِعمَةٍbounty

يَشُنُّwages الحُروبَwars عَلىagainst المُنعِمِthe Benefactor
And the worst of creatures is one blessed with bounty
who wages wars upon his Benefactor.

And had the people known the meaning of life
and what is required of a Muslim,

they would have risen swiftly to do righteous deeds,
and followed the straightest path,

مِنَfrom اللَهِGod بِالسَبَبِto the cord المُحكَمِfirm
and strengthened the bonds of faith and held fast
to the firm cord that comes from God.
تَوَلّىmade off القَوِيُّthe strong بِحَقِّwith the right of الضَعيفِthe weak
وَجارَand acted unjustly الغَنِيُّthe rich عَلىtoward المُعدِمِthe destitute
The strong have made off with the rights of the weak,
and the rich have oppressed the destitute.

وَعَربَدَand ran riot هَذاthis one فَلَمand did not يرحمِshow mercy
This one rebelled and heeded no rebuke,
and that one ran riot and showed no mercy.
أَخافُI fear عَلىfor القَومِthe people مِنfrom نَكبَةٍa calamity
تَبيتُspends the night لَهاbecause of it مِصرُEgypt فيin مَأتَمِa mourning assembly
I fear for the people a calamity
that will leave Egypt passing the night in mourning.
أَرىI see الأَرضَthe earth تَخسِفُcaving in بِالظالِمينَbeneath the oppressors
وَأَيُّand which of بَنيthe sons of مِصرَEgypt لَمhas not يَظلِمِacted unjustly
I see the earth swallowing the oppressors,
and which of Egypt's sons has not done wrong?
خَذَلناwe forsook الكِتابَthe Book وَرَبَّand the Lord of الكِتابِthe Book
فَأَينَthen where الحِمىthe sanctuary وَبِمَنand with whom نَحتَميcan we seek shelter
We have forsaken the Book and the Lord of the Book:
where, then, is refuge, and with whom can we seek shelter?
وَمَنand whomever يَخذلِforsakes اللَهُGod لاnot يَنتَصِرprevail
وَمَنand whomever يُهِنِabases اللَهُGod لاnot يُكرَمِbe honored
And anyone God forsakes will not prevail,
and anyone God abases will not be honored.
وَمَنand whoever لاdoes not يُرِدseek عِندَهُwith Him عِصمَةًprotection

إِذاwhen فَدَحَweighs heavily الخَطبُthe calamity لَمwill not يُعصَمِbe protected
And whoever seeks no protection with Him,
when calamity weighs heavily, will not be protected.
