واضِربْand set forth لهاfor her منfrom عِظاتِadmonitions الدّهرِtime أمثالاexamples
Hail Arabhood—lions and cubs alike—
And set before her examples from time’s admonitions.

Was there on earth a single banner of hers
That sank or swayed when the earth’s flanks swayed?

And what kingdom, struck by her in its strongholds
With a quake of her onslaughts, did not vanish?

Her wall stood firm against the vicissitudes of time,
So it shrank from no tempest and feared no earthquake.

Sons of Arabhood, you are messengers here,
Fulfilling wishes and hopes for the tongue of ḍād.

Come to the wellsprings of knowledge and literature;
In both, passion and love flow sweet and clear.

She is al-Kinana—the Quiver—and bloodlines are intertwined;
You will lack neither a homeland within her nor kinfolk.

You are her hope, which she watches over sleeplessly;
She never sleeps, nor stints her devotion to it.

Deliver her message and fulfill her longing,
And go swiftly to the forests in successive bands.

The blood of Arabhood across the horizons has never ceased
To flow in showers, gushing and pouring down.

It is life: safeguard it, lest at your hands
It be spilled; enough of it has already flowed.

Who will grant me such aspirations that, if I stir them, will revive
Bygone nations and generations of our people?

Sons of Arabhood, your poet sought to speak,
But he could not, nor did what he said satisfy him.

My strength has been weakened, and some of my resolve shattered today,
By an illness I find fiercely destructive and deadly.
عيشُlife الفَتىthe young man مُدّةٌa span تمضِيpasses علىaccording to قَدَرٍfate
والعمرُand the lifespan لابُدَّinevitably مطويٌّfolded up وإنeven if طالاit lasts long
A young man’s life is a span that passes as fate decrees,
And a lifetime is inevitably folded up, however long it lasts.
إنْif قَالَsays قائلُكمyour speaker ماhow كانwould have been أكْرَمَهُgenerous he was

If one of you says, ‘How generous he would have been
Had he given us more!’—I shall give you more love and reverence.
