وَنِمتَ وما نَامَ الحَريبُ المُعذَّبُ
You lay still, while grief's anguish rose and labored on.
The grief wells up and sleep evades the troubled warrior
You slept, but the bereft, tormented one did not sleep.
As you slumber, enemies plot attacks and dangers lurk

Is it the heroes' way to stir up battle,
Is it the way of heroes to unleash mayhem?
then be struck down when it is about to bring forth victory?
When victory nears, they turn back and flee

Before your eyes is the oppression endured by a nation
O eyes! The injustice you see inflicted on a nation
that spends the night in the Nile valley, bewildered, tossing and turning.
That tosses and turns in the Nile valley, lost and confused

A captive of calamities, whose raiders remain
Buffeted by shocking events, its raids ongoing
victorious, their champions never thwarted.
Its heroes victorious, never defeated

The ill-omened birds sped past, striking at her hope
The migrating birds wing closer, hoping for respite
with a black bird, ever parched and cawing.
From the searing heat that persists, ever blazing

Is there no decree of God's whose favorable omen moves
Alas! It is God's decree that runs its course
to meet her needs, or a sign from Him to be inscribed?
Meeting its needs, or a sign from Him that's prescribed

By the lives of those who held her fractures cheap,
By the exalted ones, their wounds seemed trivial
the rift that cannot be mended has surely laid her waste.
So deep are the rifts that cannot be repaired

When serious about reclaiming its rights
by a man plagued by addiction to falsehoods, making sport.
Misled by the practice of empty lies and play

Restraint was shunned and base desires indulged
her multitudes, racing on whenever he went.
Its masses awaited a chance for excess and escape

Then, when they surged ahead at full rein, he deemed them
Once the reins were seized by the heedless libertines
sparrows to be driven along, or glass vessels to be carried.
Songbirds to be caged, or vials brought near and imbibed

And he turned away to satisfy his own desire, not seeing
Indifference reigned as selfish desire was fulfilled
any need of hers to pursue beyond that.
With no other needs, it seemed, left to be sought

He teaches her to make treachery a mount
Teaching that betrayal should be the vessel
when worthy righteousness offers no mount.
When righteousness fails as a means of transport

Thus a man infects his people's character,
Thus one corrupts the morals of his people
and destroys in it what the moral teacher has built.
And demolishes what was built by the righteous

Ask Egypt, when its beloved young were destroyed
did not her hopes depart in tears?
Did its hopes not fade, and its tears not flow?

Guard the bastion of Islam, for hordes I fear

Once it filled the two horizons with its glory
whether they advanced or held back in watchful waiting.
When roused or restrained, all trembled in wait

Death encircled it whenever it tried to rise
missiles from him, roaming and ranging through terror.
Missiles unleashed creating a maelstrom of dread

I called upon the trustworthy, free man with a concerned man's appeal,
I summoned the Guardian, the noble and free
seeing the state of the free in Egypt struck by calamity.
To see Egypt’s state overturned and collapse

Deaths overcame the valor that swept mighty forces away,
Death has overcome might, violently lashing
and worldly passions—they are stronger and more victorious.
Worldly passions now stronger and more forceful

The warriors of jihad follow in succession
remnants of swords, striking in the hand of God.
Relics of swords in God’s hands continue to strike

The marauders grow still when the swords' flock is roused,
The wild beasts settle when their packs are roused
and the high heavens are pleased when they grow wrathful.
The heavens satisfied when angered and provoked

and guard the banner of right while right is stolen.
It protects the banner of truth as truth is usurped

Guidance has raised its banners in their shade,
Guidance has planted its flags in its shades
so the erring misleader has no aim to pursue there.
No path for the misguided misleader’s desires

Beacons in the darkness, radiant in the gloom
rising lights for night travelers, when the meteors are hidden.
Rising for the travelers as comets fade from sight

With them we defended Kinanah's honor; it indeed
We forbade it from exposing itself in dishonor
abides, firmly pitched where their radiance flows.
For its course is upright, well-paved and direct

The stubborn enemy chafes at it, then desists,
It frustrates the stubborn adversary, who then desists
and the ambitious foe poised to spring recoils from it.
And thwarts the ambitious clamoring climber’s ascent

Fate desires to bait it while it remains vigilant
and urges its calamities against it, though they shrink in fear.
Tempting it with events while itself alarmed and wary

We refuse to see Egypt exposed and shamed

Shall we leave her as plunder for raiders? Surely
Shall we leave it to marauders as prey? We cannot
our fathers would disown us when our descent is traced.
Our forefathers would reject us if we stayed indifferent

And toppled the highest thrones, or are we lying?

his father shunned before he was born.

Come, young men of the Nile, for devotion is the higher duty.
Come forth, Nile youth! Duty demands
Is it his due that you enjoy ease while he is exhausted?
Is it just to enjoy while others toil in pain?

for the builder has fallen asleep, and the destroyer has arisen.
The builder has rested while the destroyer persists

I weep for your fallen martyrs, their spilled blood
whose spilled blood is sold and given away.
Sold off cheaply or gifted away as charity

Sacrificial offerings, terrified in their holy sanctuaries,
Sacrifices made in its holy sanctuaries
with no wrongdoer among them and no guilty one there.
With no sinner or criminal in their midst

The Nile's protectors chose to forget the days they were sacrificed,
The Nile’s defenders forget days when brought near
so their precious lives were lost, and so was the sacrificer.
Its treasures are lost and the giver deprived

I’m shocked - are these offerings of shame?
being poured out indiscriminately, or blood gushing forth?
Blood spilled recklessly? My doubts persist

The guilty lead lamented how little they were valued
The flocks blamed the hunter for bringing dishonor
by the people, and the bloodstained weapon felt shame.
The weapon that dripped felt too ashamed to persist

Despairing, complaining of the humiliation and defeat

If nations are shocked by such improper conduct
the deed of those who forsook the pledge is surely stranger.
The exalted ones’ betrayal was more shocking still

They left hastily like gusts of wind, their glory diminished
death's swift approach—or rather, they were more righteous and sweeter.
Near destruction, unless more righteous and pure

So who will rekindle the passions when passions wane?
and a downpour of tears is driven onward by another downpour.
Who will draw out the tears when sadness grows numb?

Victims from among the righteous—their graves cried out,
The tombs of martyrs roar with victims' cries
and the prayer ground cried out, and al-Muhassab shuddered.
The mosques roar, those prostrating shudder cold

Come forth, Nile youth! Do not recoil in fear!
for the caller is eager, and the herald repeats his summons in earnest.
The caller is vigorous, the rewarder bounds ahead

The truth never swerves from its approach
for anyone who seeks the highest ideal, nor any escape from it.
For those seeking ideals, with no escape

We dread procrastination and delays

What can shields do? Experts can confirm

Nile youth! Do not compare us to others
for the plain is not deceptive, nor the lightning a false promise.
The plains are not treacherous, the lightnings not false

We have acknowledged her most sacred rights,
We know its sacrosanct rights and abstain from harm

Those are the standards of the struggle: proclaim God's greatness,
Those were the flags of jihad, so celebrate!
and those are the country's anthems: sing them in refrain.
These were the anthems of the land, so sing aloud!
