Sons of Egypt, what of the covetous, and what of you,

And of her plunder, divided among their hands?

Do you sleep through the earthquake, or does it not appall you—

The arrogant rage of this grim-faced assailant?

By the lives of those whose sons you are, and by what they built

Of glory in the shade of straightened spear-shafts,

If you do not spring up as a roaring lion springs,

You will surely encounter the falsehood of conjectural talk.

You have indeed been admonished—if you understood their lessons—

By calamities that light the path for the discerning.

Is it not time for my people to rise toward the heights,

To expel the eagles circling over Egypt?

Yes, the time has come—if only their good sense returned,

And the charge of the determined raider alarmed them.

They are slow to undertake the great task, as though

They see in it a sentence of inevitable death.

    Abased, they bear every injustice,

And whoever fears to face battle is wronged.

People are ever in struggle and in a maelstrom

Of life: the bold climb over the hesitant one's corpse.

The world is like the ocean: some of its people ransom themselves

At others' cost, and so they end up drowned or swimming.

The strong man of a people crushes their weak one's neck,

And goes forth unblamed for what he has wrought.

There is no right except where spears clash,

And where one keen sword meets another's edge.

There, when war's dust has settled,

Then ask the higher of the two banners about it, and you will know.

Likewise, the small birds bow before the vulture,

And lions have the choicest food from the beasts of the wilderness.

I see Egypt in blind turmoil, its depths casting forth

Calamities that destroy the sighted and the blind.

An archer of terror aims them; were he to shoot

Them at the revolving firmament, it would move no farther.

My anguish for Egypt, whose Nile is dear

To me, is the anguish of one doomed in honor and blood.

Awake, for this ember of evil among you

Blazes—and unless it dies out today, it will grow.

And strive, for abasement is the most ill-omened companion,

And greatness belongs to the toiler who shoulders hardship.

A hoarse voice from me has called to you, as though

It were echoing the sound of crashing, rumbling thunder.

And many a widely spread rallying cry has seized you

Long ago, with images of reeds set ablaze.

I hurled it at the farthest crowds among you,

So it barred every broad pass and narrow passage before you.

But for your evil traits, there would surely have been restored

The pillars of the country's shattered glory.

And frank speech, purified by reason—

Spreading to the farthest lands and flung abroad—

Is truly fine praise for a man, in life and when borne away

By companions, some weeping and some praying for mercy.
