And read the message to the companions, and listen.

Indeed, those who made the Book their guide
followed the path to the loftiest station.

God is its guardian, and they are its defenders;
they placed its treasures in the noblest place.

Many an enemy, if he could, would cast it
into a dark abyss, without a scruple.

A treasure of wondrous verses, sent down,
enduring through the ages, never lost.

And it is safety for everyone whose strength is sapped,
laden with fears and cares, terror-stricken.

With it, the defenders conquered kingdoms and built
a world of civilization within its impregnable sanctuary.

And ask the peoples: were they not, before it,
disordered in their ways, like freely grazing herds?

لَيسَ السَهارى كَالنِيامِ الهُجَّعِ
They kept watch while we slept, and our sanctuary was violated.
The wakeful are not like sleepers deep in slumber.

The wise man admonished—where among us is one who sees?
And the summoner called—where among us is one who heeds?

O people, seek refuge in the Book, for you have no
stronghold or refuge apart from it.

Nothing remains of you but a grievously wounded remnant,
torn apart by the hand of misfortunes and calamities.

Since the archers perished, no Muslim's flank
has escaped a deathblow from the enemy's hand.

Alas for the Muslims! It is as though
they had settled in a barren valley of this world.

No crops grow there; and for their thirst,
no watering place along its sides offers anything but harm.

They are given it to drink, like scalding water, and at times
they find it like an infusion of deadly poison.

If you are storing up tears for a calamity,
then shed your tears for the fallen eagles.

They soared aloft, but their flock was suddenly struck,
so they fell scattered, as though never gathered together.

Alas for the community—how its necklace is scattered
in fragments! And what a heart-rending calamity!

By God, if you follow the faith of guidance,
then leave caprice to the headstrong and unbridled.

Return to the faith of life with dignity,
for woe to those who surrender in abasement.
