A vision from the assembly on high, a spectacle—
In full view of the Highest Assembly and plain for all to behold
Where are eloquence and a pulpit fit for such a sight?
Where is eloquence to match it and where is the pulpit?

Gabriel calls out, and the Prophet, as is his wont,
Gabriel proclaims and the Prophet, as is his custom,
Amid the ranks, sees the faces and looks on.
Sees the faces amid the ranks and looks on.

And the seven jurists, in their measured recitation
The seven jurists in their chanting
Of the Reminder, with the noblest assembly in attendance.
Of the Remembrance, and the Assembly entirely assembled.

Lower your gazes in reverence—or look:
Lower your glances reverently or look
Here is Ali in the gathering, and Ja'far.
This is Ali in the Prophet and Ja'far.

God sent down an upright Scripture
Describing life to everyone who reflects.
Describing life for all who reflect.

It is His light and His path; there is no comparable
It is His light and His path—none compares to it,
Light to be sought, nor path to be preferred.
A light to be hoped for and no path preferred over it.

Whoever strays in it has no one to excuse him,
Whoever is misguided without an excuse—
While one who gropes in darkness is excused.
Though people wander confused in the dark, they are excused.

A faith overflowing with guidance, and a radiant world,
A religion overflowing with guidance and a world entirely open
Like verdant spring—or more radiant still.
Like the fresh verdure of spring or more so.

The world of the Caesars—or is it the world whose
The world of the Caesars or the world we knew
Vanguards advanced, so Caesar turned and fled?
Whose vanguards have turned and the Caesars fled.

What is our plight among the nations? Is it not enough
What is our business with the nations when it suffices
That we are faulted for our faith and taunted?
That we are blamed for our religion and reviled?

They ruled through their falsehood and trampled our truth,
They rule by their falsehood while trampling our truth
And surely we are fitter to rule and more deserving.
Though we are more worthy to rule and more suited.

O our people, do you know your Book,
O people, do you know your Scripture
Or is there no believer among you who takes heed?
Or is there no believer among you who remembers?

Pardon me: the affliction has grown great and stirred me,
Forgive me, but hardship has overwhelmed me
Until I truly think my lifeblood is bursting forth.
To think my brain is about to burst.

And it is as though within my liver and between my ribs
As if among my flesh, lungs, and ribs
A blazing fire surges and roars.
Were a blazing fire raging and boiling.

If you do not know it, it is the secret that
If you are ignorant of it, it is the mystery
Revives souls when they die and are buried.
That gives life when souls die and are buried.

And it is the hoped-for refuge, protecting us when
It is the expected refuge to protect us when
Events unfold in ways we fear and dread.
Matters proceed as we fear and dread.

What should we fear, when every letter is a stronghold?
What do we fear when each letter is a stronghold
And to whom should we submit, when every line is an army?
And whom do we obey when each line is a troop?

It is Islam's strength; there is no force
It is the strength of Islam—no strength
With which it is assailed that is not repelled and overcome.
Can be flung at it without being turned back and subdued.

We surely champion our Lord and honor Him,
We will surely help our Lord and elevate Him
And surely we are the worthiest to honor and champion Him.
And we are the worthiest to elevate and help.

Those who entertained suspicions about our people lied;
The misguided ones thought ill thoughts of our people:
Can the blind man see, and the sighted man go blind?
Can the blind see and the seeing go blind?

They claimed civilization was built only by
They claimed civilization would not flourish
Their right hands, though the truth is plain and radiant.
Except by their beliefs—the truth is clear and evident.

Are these tumults part of civilization, over which
Is this the civilization whose calamities
The world has come to clamor and cry out?
Have kept the world quaking and raging night and day?

They sprang into action: there are kingdoms hurled
They went into action—those are kingdoms made
Amid the tempests, or peoples slaughtered.
To be flung into storms, or peoples slaughtered.

They strike in the name of right, though it is their adversary
They hurl in the name of truth when truth is their adversary
Over the blood that is spilled and squandered.
Regarding the blood spilled and lives devastated.

Has any pillar of civilization arisen without
Was any pillar of civilization erected
A wrecker and a destroyer from among them rising against it?
Without them sending to it a wrecker and destroyer?

They slaughtered peace; from their victim's blood
They butchered peace, so from their victim's blood
In every land a deep sea blazes.
In every land lurks an expanding conflagration.

بِئْسَhow vile التِجارُthe merchants هموthey وبئسَand how vile المتجرُthe trade
War is a market, and souls are merchandise;
War is a market and souls are goods—
What vile merchants they are, and what a vile trade!
What wretched merchants and what a wretched commerce!

Souls have grown tyrannical: an oppressor will not desist
Souls have rebelled. Unjust, heedless of his injustice,
From his oppression, and a troublemaker will not relent.
Aggressive, never curtailing his aggressiveness.

We were the invaders, the conquerors; yet there was not
We were conquerors who opened lands—
Among us an insolent or tyrannical man.
None of us was coercive or arrogant.

Indeed, the chosen Book restrains us,
The chosen Scripture restrains us
And the most righteous, purest faith holds us back.
And the purest, most righteous religion turns us back.

O you who vindicate the Quran against its enemies,
O you who defend the Quran against its foes!
You are your people's greatest armament.
You are the greatest help for your people.

This is the believers' path; through it you have
This is the path of the believers—its reward belongs to you—
The reward of one who strives, and one who strives is rewarded.
The warrior is rewarded and the fighter wages war.

Do we seek our Lord's mercy while His Book
Do we seek our Lord's mercy and His Book
Is spurned as time passes, and abandoned?
To be distanced in time's bitterness and neglected?

You are God's company; there is no work like your
You are God's party—your deeds are not equal:
Work, and you are His chosen party.
A choosing, not equally chosen.

The Reminder is preserved by your worthy efforts,
The Remembrance is protected by your righteous deeds.
Enduring in the world, proclaimed and spread.
Enduring upon this world, proclaimed and spread.

It restrains souls from desire and turns them back
It sways souls away from desire and returns them
From the matters it censures and condemns.
From objectionable matters, refusing and preventing them.

And from its verses it raises for morality
And it establishes the morality of its verses
An edifice before which other edifices are awed and terrified.
Like an edifice for which facades collapse and tremble.

It gives settings and situations their due,
It gives each stance and position its due—
Thus, at times a bearer of glad tidings, at times a warner.
Now gentle, now warning.

God has honored you through it and loved you,
And God honors those who love and give thanks.
And God honors whom He loves and who give thanks.
