Your mounts have reached the foremost of the riders,
Your horse reached the first of the caravans
And set down your saddle in the farthest lands.
And threw your luggage to the farthest of homelands

Parting sang you onward through forty scowling years,
The determination guided you with forty relentless ones
Hideous of face and loathsome of hue.
Ugly faces, despicable colors

Grief bore down upon their saddles, and there flowed as blood
Sorrow turned away with its luggage and blood flowed
The water of the tear ducts, weighing down the reins.
The water of affairs, so it turned towards the saddlebags

Their hurrying mounts pass through a dusty, desolate waste,
Its regiments pass through a desolate fearful darkness
Where the cawing ravens glide.
In which the flirtations of ravens flow

The vale of parting, where for the grieving were marked out
The valley of determination, they charted it for those in sorrow
A night-path for cares and a roaming-ground for sorrows.
A passage for worries and a theater for sorrows

Each day the riding-camels are driven toward it
It moves the riders every day in its direction
By parting's dawn traveler and the friend who leaves at dusk.
To the separation that departed and to the beloved brothers

They departed swiftly, like fortresses toppled
They quickly disappeared like the fallen fortresses
By the doom of a shuddering earthquake.
Which fate with its tremors struck

Calamities assailed; into their depths there fell
Misfortunes befell and fell in its depths
A captive people beneath Kinana's shade.
A people with the banners of defeat complained

Its vital parts exposed, it is still assailed
The fighting warrior continues to be intoxicated
By one whose enmity is plain and whose hatred is overt.
By the fighting enmity, prominent hostility

It is ever made to mourn its defenders, men of honor,
Those proud of the protectors have not ceased to be alarmed
Disdainful of the wearers of crowns,
Arrogant over those with crowns

Rebelling against time, which would impose on them
Rebelling against time making them
The brand of humiliation and the condition of submission.
A stigma of humiliation and a mark of submission

The unbowed bore them up to a lofty height,
The refusal arose with them to a noble horizon
From which the crushing blows of time fall away.
From which the hits of events recoil

So high that, were the jinn in their might
High, if jinn in their power
To attempt it, they would fall upon their chins.
Had designs on it, they would have fallen from the minds

Its dweller makes light of fearsome danger,
The frightening danger, its resident underestimates
And deems it the most awe-inspiring home and place.
And sees it as a humiliating residence and place

Men's ascent to immortality, and a ladder
The ladder of men to immortality and a ladder
From which the feeble laggard falls away.
From which the incapable coward falls

And if you are granted a soul of tireless strength,
And if you are granted an enduring soul
Then rejoice, for through all time you shall not perish.
Then congratulations, you are not bound to perish in this world

O Ali, yours is but a yearning man's evening journey,
The most valuable thing in you is nothing but the spirit of the challenger
Restless in his quests, his sorrows surging.
Restless in demands, raging in sorrows

The wretched abode grew too narrow for him, so he turned
The miserable house was too narrow so he headed off
To the abode of bliss and the dwelling of divine favor.
To the house of bliss and the abode of contentment

The martyr has won honor; he who forsakes his right goes on
The martyr prevailed and left granting his right
In a life of abasement and disgrace.
To the humiliation of his living and decline
