    O feeder of the army, you have sated the swords with blood.

    Without you, they would never have been sated, nor would the army have eaten.

    You are the life that has flowed through all who set forth,

    Enveloping the armored warrior and the keen, cleaving sword.

    Generosity continued, with neither stinginess nor weariness.

    The creed of chivalry rejects stinginess and weariness.

    تَمضِي أصابعُها في شأنِها قُدُما

    The Muslims are a hand working for God;

    Its fingers move forward in their task.

    No finger complains of another finger's weakness,

    Nor stands apart from it when it complains of pain.

    لو كانَ من ذَهَبٍ ما زِدْتَه عِظَما

    O Sa'd, you paid God's due from fruit;

    Had it been gold, you would not have made it greater.

    Such is goodness: a man is called a prize to be won,

    If he goes among the people, plundering it as gain.

    Your date-palms, O Sa'd ibn Sa'idah, have increased you

    In virtue, and surpassed their peers in generosity.

    واللَّهُ يكتبُ فَانْظُرْ هل تَرَى القَلَمَا

    Here is their fruit, plundered by the people's hands;

    And God records it—look: do you see the pen?

    He counted it, O Sa'd, item by item, then multiplied it,

    So you cannot count it until you count the nations.

    إنّ الحديثَ حديثُ الدّهرِ لو عَلِما

    Repel 'Uyaynah, and restrain his companion's folly;

    Indeed, this is a story for all time, if only those two knew.

    There is no bargaining over Medina's dates,

    Until the sword returns from them brimming and surfeited.

    The food of every young man called to serve God,

    Who will not sheathe the sword before those who feed the idol.

    You withheld it and championed God amid a rabble

    From the band of idolaters, who will not accept Him as judge.

    And protected it as a banner for truth, keeping watch over it.

    He who does not guard the banner does not guard his honor.

    What can people do if what they hold sacred is lost?

    And what harm is it to the earth if it bears no decaying remains?

    Did you not call out on the day of Badr to those who went forth

    To war, braving the blazing heat of its fires:

    فأين يذهبُ دِينُ اللَّهِ إن هُزِما

    "O people, the hosts of unbelief are massing;

    So where will God's religion go if it is defeated?

    If it does not pass the night safe from the evil they have planned,

    Then may none of us survive or be safe!"

    O you who roused the scattered people from their resting places,

    Why has your resolve crouched in their tracks?

    Because of the baleful snake, you laid down your weapons against

    Your will, and began suffering grief and sickness.

    You had been eager for it—a momentous battle

    That left not one of unbelief's fortresses standing.

    Thus spoke God's Messenger, and they rejoiced—

    The battlefields, because of you, though you had not set foot there.

    He gave you your share, rewarding an intention that was sincere.

    Such is God's law: he showed no favoritism and did no wrong.
