    Do flags flutter over funerals,

or is Egypt's glory built upon blood?

Tell the anguished youth: be patient.

The cares have passed, and the pains have vanished.

Nothing remains but right, whose festival is witnessed

by a homeland of yours, radiant and smiling.

It inspired your martyrs, so they advanced:

    Indeed, life's mainstay is daring.

How can one who loves his country find rest

while the people are stricken and the country is wronged?

We surely know, when our right is denied,

that life is forbidden to our souls.

Whoever asks us for peace—we have

no peace without Egypt and Egypt's right.

We defend the sanctuary of her independence and safeguard her,

until the peoples submit to her might.

    ما في الوفاءِ على الرّجالِ مَلامُ

    And we keep faith with her covenant, even if the foes resent it;

no blame falls on men for keeping faith.

    إنّا لَقومٌ صَادِقونَ كِرامُ

    Do not deny, O Egypt, our valiant efforts;

we are surely a truthful, noble people.

Yours is whatever sacrifice you desire; and these

are our souls, if our bodies do not suffice.

On the day you called, 'Is there any champion?'—was there

anything but gushing blood and blazing fire?

    وَمَضَوا فلا فَرَقٌ ولا إحجامُ

    The youth rose, and their ranks did not swerve;

and they pressed on, with neither fear nor hesitation.

They advanced, taking risks, proud and mighty,

while fire was a torrent and bullets a heap.

The scenes that day left no doubt:

Azrael was shooting, and death was arrows.

O places where the martyrs fell, where is their blood?

And has burning thirst been quenched by it and by you?

Has justice quenched the thirst, and has there risen

a pillar of right, and has order been firmly established?

Your memory rings on; is there

anyone who forgets it, when the days are among your poets?
