Eight years of joy possessed my heart,
أصاحبة الحكم الذي وسع الورى
O ruler whose wisdom encompassed the world,
يا قاتلا نفسه من بعد ما عجزت
O you who killed himself after failing
يا مرضي القصرين بالفضل الذي
O reconciler of the two palaces with virtue
يا خفي الغايات والأغراض
O you who hides intentions and purposes
بلغت المدى المأمول فيما تجاهد
You have reached the hoped for goal through your striving,
طربا فؤادي لا برحت طروبا
My heart has been delighting in rapture
المجد مجدك طارفا وتليدا
Your glory is glorious, charming and lasting
أمانة ما حملتم أيها الرسل
The mandate you bear, O messengers
يا آل عثمان لا ندري أنعتذر
O House of Othman, we do not know whether to apologize
جدد لمصر شبابها المأمولا
Renew the youth of Egypt, the hoped for
المؤمنون إليك مستبقونا
The faithful are yearning for you,
كانت بلادك في نواك محولا
Your homeland was once a sanctuary,
شوق القلوب إلى الجناب الغائب
The hearts' longing for the absent beloved,
الفضل فضلك زائرا ومزورا
Your favor is a favor visiting and visited
لك يا فؤاد ولاء كل فؤاد
You have the loyalty of every heart, O my heart,
جاء الجواب فأعلنوه سلاما
The response came, so announce it as peace,
تكلم أيها البطل السعيد
Speak, O happy hero
طالع القوم بالدعاء المجاب
The people set out with answered prayers
نعم الضمان جلوسك الميمون
Auspicious is your presence, august and benign,
مصاب الحمى والشعب فيك أم الحرب
The fever-stricken, yet the people in you, or is it the war,
فيك الرجاء مسلما ومودعا
In you is hope, as a Muslim and a fareweller
صاح استمع خبرا يبدي لك العبرا
Listen, a tale that shows a moral
ألفتكم حتى كرهت محاذرا
I have loved you so much that I have come to hate being wary,
لا تلوموا خليفة الغرب في اللَه
Blame not the West's viceroy for God's sake
وزهدني في الحب أني رأيته
Love has lost its charm for me, for I have seen
شعراء العصر سمعا لأخ
O poets of this age, lend me your ears
حديث قومي عن تقواك بشرني
My people's talk of your piety gives me good news
قد ميزوك وخصوك
Roses are red, violets are blue, I cannot translate, so nothing to you.

A clever, poetic soul, a writer free
لا كان عباد نهر الكنج إنهم
The worshippers on the banks of the Ganges, they are
نعمان يا صاح فتى
Numan, O youth of lineage
مازال كل فتى يجيد
Every young man still comes
يا آل عثمان قد أصبحتم هدفا
O House of Othman, you have become
أهنت أباك البر وهو الذي حنا
Homeland I blamed my father for righteousness and he who was gentle
قد دعاه الحمى به مستجيرا
The fever called him, seeking refuge
أصاحبة الحسن المموه للأذى
The one with beauty that hides harm
كنت أشكو دلال هند وأعصى
I used to complain of a coquettish beloved, faulting her in my youth and sincerity.
يا شاعرينِ تساقيا الشعرا
O two poets, exchanging poetry
حبيبتي جاهلة
My beloved is ignorant
أحبها وهي تخفي حبه أدبا
She loved him while hiding her love out of propriety
ماذا دهاك من النوائب
What misfortunes have befallen you
كروباتكين يومك غير أمس
Kurobatkin's day is not like yesterday
أفي كل يوم يشهد النيل نابغا
Does the Nile witness the birth of a genius every day
لك أن يوفيك الرواة ترنما

رجعت أنادي الرسم لو سمع الرسم

سلاما على حصنكم والعلم

ملك بخلقك والندى المتوالي

أعد يا خطيب الدعوة الحرة التي

ذوي الأمر هل جئتم بمحترم الأمر
O rulers, have you come with one who honors authority
سلام صاحب الوادي ومجد
Greetings owner of the valley and glory
بعدلك والاحسان والبأس تحكم
With justice, benevolence, and might you rule,
مد سلطانه فعز عليهم
His authority spread, so it was difficult for them
بالشمل لا بالحديد اليوم والنار
Today with determination, not with iron and fire
عادت اليوم مصر خلقا جديدا
Egypt has returned today with a new spirit,
تعهد الملك أدناه وأقصاه
The King's oath to serve his realm from end to end
اليوم يومك وهو المشرق الرحب
Today is your day, so expansive and wide
رحيل بعزم الفاتحين سعيد
A departure with the resolve of conquerors, happy
شكوت كما يشكو نوى الألف طائر
I complain as the lonely bird complains
الحكم حكمك راحلا ومقيما
Your rule is everlasting, departing and abiding,
ادعوا الأعزة واصطفوا الأنجابا
Call the dear ones and choose the best,
سلاما على الوطن الخالد
Greetings to the immortal homeland,
هدى سرت لا عينا منعت ولا أذنا
She guided without denying eyes or ears
يا آل لطف اللّه آل إليكم
O kin of Allah's kindness, kin of Ismail
يا وزير البلاد جئنا نحييك
O Minister of the country, we came to greet you
وقالوا سكت اليوم قلت رويدكم
They said "He's silent today," I said "Wait,
يا أديب الزمان تهنئة بالسود
O scholar of the age, congratulations without gloom
جمعت في العيد حولي سائر
I gathered all my kin around me on Eid
إمارة الشعر خذها يا حسين فقد
O Hussain, take the emirate of poetry, for
مستشار البلاد أنت على ما
You are the advisor of the country as you see fit for it, O Mighty One
تجاهلني الوادي الخصيب وأهله
The fertile valley ignored me and its people
حبيبي سوف يملأ بعد موتي
My love, after my death
أين البيان عساي أشرح ما بي
Where is the proof that I explain what is in me
يا شهيد الوادي ذهبت وخليت
Oh martyr of the valley, you left
بذلنا لذكرى الأربعين دموعنا
We shed our tears in mourning for the fortieth day
طواك الردى ورماك القدر
Fate has exhausted you and destiny has cast you,
وما مضى شهران حتى هما
Scarcely two months had passed when they
في وسط قنطرة تلاقت
On a narrow bridge one day
وزير مصر أعدها أصدق الخطب
O Minister of Egypt, prepare the most honest speech,
حدثتنا عن الغريم الليالي
You told us of the nightly enemy
بكر بتبشير البلاد وأهلها
Announce the good tidings to the country and its people
خذوا السلام قضاء غير مردود
Take peace as an irrevocable decree,
يا وفد مصر وزين البدو والحضر
O delegation of Egypt, beauty of nomads and cities
كنت أسقى الرحيق والعود رطب
I used to be watered with wine, and the moist wood
منيلي الود على كبركا
I yearned for your affection in your old age
قسما بعزة تاجه ولوائه
I swear by the honor of his crown and banner,
عادت بعودك آمالي وأحلامي
Your return revived my hopes and dreams
بكيت على شعري الذي ضاع قدره
I wept for my lost fate, my fortune gone
أبغض عنصر السلافيينا
I despise the Slavic peoples
تخلفت يوما بعد جهد وشقة
I once lagged behind out of hardship and torment,
أكبرت خطبك والخطوب عظام
Your great speeches and engagements are bones,
يا بلاء السماء والأرضِ مهلا
O affliction of the heavens and earth, wait!
يا واصف العرب الكرام لأمة
O you who describe the generous Arabs as a nation
يا لائمي فيما التمست
O you who blame me for what I have sought
حسب البلاد تنبؤا وتكهنا
According to the country, predicting and guessing,
يا آل مراكش والنفس واجفة
O people of Marrakesh, my soul is weary,
مملكتي تملأ سدس الأرض
My kingdom fills a sixth of the earth
دعينا إلى تأبين من مات قبلنا
We were called to eulogize those who died before us
يا أخي موطنا ودينا وعمرا
My brother in homeland, faith and life
يا ناصر الآداب عد
O supporter of literature, return
مرحبا يا ولي عهد الحليف
Greetings, heir apparent and ally
أترضى يا كروب بأن تسمى
Would you be pleased, O Crowe, to be called
بعثت إلى الراوي بشعري فهاله
I sent my poetry to the reciter and it overwhelmed him
أنسيت موعدك الذي أكدته
Homecoming
يا ابن عثمان إن خطبك خطبي
O son of Uthman, your sorrows are my sorrows
غضبتم ورهيب منكم الغضب
You were enraged, and your rage was terrifying,
بكينا فما أغنى البكاء ولا الحزن
We cried but crying and grief avail naught,
شكوت شكوى الأبي الشجو والشجنا
I complained the complaint of the afflicted father, lamenting and grieving,
قال الطبيب تبسم
The doctor smiled and said,
لك الأمر منتظر أم لنا
The command is yours - are we waiting or not?
يا صريع الشريف قبلك هانت
O noble victim before whom women's honor faded
اليوم جئت بمحكم الإنذار
Today I have come with a decisive warning
قضية مصر في هذا المكان
The cause of Egypt in this place
أنا حر الفؤاد والجثمان
I am free in spirit and body
يا صاحب الأدب الفياض تهنئة
O you of abundant courtesy, congratulations
رسل الإمام المقبلين صباحا
The imam's messengers set out at dawn
إن للكهرباء فضلاً على الناس
Electricity has done the people a great favor and bestowed a precious gift
لبيك لبيك في هذي المروآت
I am here, I am here in these mirrors
أهلا بودك قيصر الألمان
Welcome to your power, German Caesar
عبد الحميد بما أكسبت قومك في
Abdul Hamid, with what you have done for your people in the cause of religion, the people have become content.
أنسيتني يا حادث الصرب ما

أدركت بالحسنى هوى الجبار
I have attained the desire of the Almighty through virtue
أمانة الملك تدعوكم وتدعوني

مرضت يوما فقالوا أزمة وقعت
Once I fell ill, and they said a crisis has occurred
أقر قومك ما تنوي وتعتزم
Tell your people what you intend and plan
ما زلت في حزن لفقد محمد
I'm still in sorrow for the loss of Muhammad
ما أجهل الأب لو ربى ابنه ترفا
How ignorant is the father if he raises his son in luxury
أبعد الذي قلدتما الدين والحمى
O you who have been endowed with religion and zeal
كذا فلينصر الدين الإمام
Thus let the Imam support religion,
وداعا يا أشد النازلات
Farewell, O most calamitous of adversities,
عاود جهادك مقضي المشيئات
Resume your jihad, executor of destinies,
دون الأحبة ما لا أستطيع ولي
Without my loved ones, I can do naught but yearn
رأيت فتى شكا ألما قويا
I saw a young man complaining of great pain
لم أشأ أن أفاجئ القوم بالنصح
I did not want to shock the people with the text
عرفت أطباء الزمان فكان من
I got to know the physicians of the time, so of
رجعت من المطاف بلا نصيب
I returned from pilgrimage with no gain
تقدم بقانونك العادل
Present your just law,
اسلك الأرض ومهدها اتساعا
Pave the land and make it spacious,
إني لأسمع نذر الحرب داوية
I hear the rumble of war resounding
أهنئ نفسي والبلاد وأهلها
I congratulate myself, the country, and its people,
باليمن ركبك يغتدي ويروح
Your journey to Yemen embarks and returns
ملك كما ترضى وعدل قائم
A just king as you please, justice established
قلب الدهر الشؤونا
Time has turned affairs around
ولائي كما أخلصته لك دائم
My allegiance as I have sincerely given it to you is always
ألقيت عبأك في مدى الميدان
You bore your burden in the expanse of the field,
لك الولاء الذي لم يخفه أحد
You have the allegiance that no one has concealed
اليوم يوم معزة وفخار
Today is a day of pride and glory
شرا يرى الناس أم خيرا يلاقونا
Whether people see evil or good from us,
وطني أنت الحبيب الدائم
My homeland, you are the eternal beloved
ما بال عينك لم تغمض فلم تنم
Why have your eyes not closed, so you could sleep?
أي فخر يا أيها الهرمان
What pride, O pyramids,
ديار أحبائي عليك سلاميا
My beloved home, peace be upon you
إذا استبقيت في الدنيا حبيبا
If I were to keep a lover in this life,
برئت علتي فحمدا لربي
My illness has gone, so praise be to my Lord,
أحباب قلبي اذكروا وعدا لذي ذمم
My heart's beloveds, remember a promise made by one with obligations
ورفاق إذا رأوا لي مجدا
When friends saw glory come to me
درست طبائع الأجساد عاما
I studied the nature of bodies for a year,
لولا المروءة والذكاء
Were it not for honor and wisdom
إخواننا أهلا بكم ومرحبا
Our brothers, welcome and greetings,
يا آل مصر حذارِ أن
O people of Egypt, beware
أحبك يا متيلد وأي قلب
I love you, Miltilda, and what heart
بأية عيد أنت يا عيد عائد
With what festival are you a returning festival?
أهنئ عرش عثمان المفدى
I congratulate Uthman's exalted throne
دار الخلافة حاطك البسفور
The caliphate palace has installed you as a pillar,

أين نصحي لكم وأين نذيري

يا رجال البلاد من كل حزب

يقين البلاد وإيمانها
The faith of the country and its certainty
فؤادي استرح بعد طول العناء

أتلومينني لتشبيهي الخدين

على أي شيء يرجع الخلف بينكم
On what basis does the dispute between you recur,
يا أغلبية قومي في سياستهم

يا عيد لم تترك همومي في يدي

يقولون مات الشاعران ولم تنح
They say the two poets died, yet grief did not depart,
حسبي وحسبك من علم وتجريب
My knowledge and your knowledge from learning and experience
نصيبك من يتم أخذت ومن ثكلِ
You took your share of an orphan's wealth, while I
تنادى صحاب بالرحيل وفارقوا
The companions called for departure and left,
هاجه الوجد فمالا
Passion seized him, so he danced
عبد الحميد وما سواك لملة
Abdul Hamid, none but you protects
من لي إذا لم ألق منك معينا
Who do I have if I don't find you as a helper?
وقالوا فضولي تعدى وما دروا
They said he was intrusive and overstepped, though they did not realize
زهور البلاد اليوم أبطالها غدا
The heroes of the country are its flowers today,
رأيت دعواك في المنار
I saw your call in the high minaret
سكت يا قوم شهرا واختفيت وما
Silent, my people, for a month, concealed was I,
يا رجال البلاد هذا أوان الفصل
O men of the country, this is the time of separation
سلام يا وزير المال مني
Greetings to you, Minister of Finance from me
خطبت الخطاب الفخم في المحفل الفخم
You delivered the eloquent speech in the elegant gathering
صاحب الفضل والمحامد فينا
You who deserves all praise and commendation from us
كتبت إليكم ما استحق مقامكم
I wrote to you what your stature deserved,
مهلا لتمتحن الطريق خطاكا
Slow down to test the path with your steps
لا نقبل الملام في اليابان
We do not blame Japan
في حكم عباسٍ الثاني وسؤدده
In the reign of al-‘Abbas the Second and his rule
يا آل مصر كفاها ما بها جزعا
O people of Egypt, enough of your sorrow
عذيري من الدنيا كريم دعوته
My excuse from this life is a generous friend I called upon
يا ليتني كنت حساما ماضيا
Oh, if only I were a sword of old
يا وزير المال اجمع المال واصرف
O minister of finance, gather the money and spend
يا عين شمسٍ إن أفضل ما بنى
O sun's eye, the best of what the ladies built
لا تحسبوا أن في ذا الغيث منفعة
Do not think that this rain will benefit
لا مجد لي بتقى أبي
No glory remains for me except my father,
هكذا فلتقم لك الأعياد
Thus may your feasts stand for you,
رأى جمل حشائش فاشتهاها
The camel saw the grass and craved it
قضى اليوم ما وده المخلصونا
The faithful have accomplished today what they wished
شمس الجمال أذاب حبك مهجتي
The sun of beauty melted my soul
سلاما من النفس الأبية ألقيه
I send you greetings of noble spirit
ماذا استفدنا من هزائم العدى
What did we gain from defeating the enemy
أعد يا فتى الوادي مطافك في القرى
Return, O young man, to roam the valleys among the villages
حقلي اليوم سعيد
My field today is happy
وددت لو أني تزوجت
I wish I had married
فزعت من اختلاف القوم حينا
I was alarmed by the discord among the people for a while
أي رحمى مني تريد وما أبقيت
What mercy from me do you seek when I
بأي لسان أخطب اليوم فيكم
In what tongue shall I address you today?
يا أورزيل إليك أشكو لوعة
O Urwa, to you I complain of the anguish
أهلا بشاعر فارس وأديبِها
Welcome, poet of Persia and her man of letters,
لا أبتغي منك سوى الوفاء
I ask for nothing from you but loyalty
هات يا لندن الأحاديث سودا
Bring the news, oh London, darkened
مولاي هديك في الصيام
My Master, may your guidance in fasting
حاملة الجرة تمشي بها
The water-bearer walks with her jug
أعيى عزائمك القضاء الأغلب
The fate decreed has wearied your resolves,
رب هذا شعري وهذا بياني
Lord, this is my poetry and this is my rhetoric
آن للشاعر إطلاق العنان
The poet is free to let loose
واطردت هواجس الشعوب
I dismissed the anxieties of nations
لا ذنب للناس يوم الأربعاء بما
The people are not at fault on Wednesday for what
لم يكفه أن الرعية أصبحوا
It was not enough that the masses became
نسوني فلا ألقى سلاما ولا ردا
They forgot me, so I give no greeting nor response,
إن الجواد الذي يعطي ويذكر ما
The generous man who gives and then recalls
يا أورزيل أسلوانا وتعزية
O Ursula, my consolation and solace
يا زعيم الأحرار قولا وفعلا
O leader of the free, in word and deed,
تعالوا تعالوا قادة الشعب واسمعوا

أنت يا مالئ الممالك ذكرا

يا واعدي بجزائي

متيلد أنت عروس
Mildred, you are a bride
وفيت لأوطاني مروءة مخلص
I have fulfilled the dutifulness of patriotism
علي آل إليك الحكم واستبقت
The rule has come to you, and your ministry has surpassed
يا قوم قدر أن تروني شاعرا
O people, it was destined that you see me a poet
يا صاحب العرش المكينِ
O Lord of the steadfast throne
عنيت بحزبك حتى اكتمل
I was loyal to your party until it was fulfilled
ماذا أقول لقومي اليوم عن عملي
What shall I tell my people today about my work
شوطك الحاضر اقتبلت أوانه
You have reached the present stage in due time,
يقولون إن الطب أتقنه الورى
They say that medicine is perfected by mankind
دعوتم فلبى كل حر وأقدما

إنا على الإعجاب باليابان
We are amazed by Japan,
نجوت فأنجيت هذا الوطن
You have survived, so you have saved this nation
كرموا الفضل في رحيب مكانه
Honor excellence in its spacious abode
متيلد يا بنت عمي
My niece, on your birthday
قالوا جزعت فقلت أي مشوق
They said I was in anguish, so I replied: What yearner
يا دولة تدعو الدفاع غدرا
O state, you call for treacherous defense
سلاما على الإخوان حلوا بقريتي
Greetings to the brethren who visited my village
يا صاحبي إني نشأت على
O my friend, I was raised to
ورابه المطال والتسويف
The procrastination and delays had gone on too long
حملت إليكم في يميني كتابيا
I have brought to you in my right hand my book
كل يوم نرى ونسمع مهدي
Every day we see and hear a misguided one
أرى الدهر يبغي مصرعي غير راحم
I see fate seeking my demise without mercy,
عيد الجهاد رعاك الله من عيد
Feast of Jihad, may Allah protect you from harm,
لك في البلاد المهرجان الأكبر
You have the grandest festival in the countries
أهذه جرثومة الوباء
Is this the germ of the plague,
أعزي وزير الأمتين وأشتكي
I console the minister of the two nations,
كم ادعيتم زمان الكأس إنكم
How often you claimed in days gone by, over cups,
أحرار مصر الأوفياء سلام
O Egypt's loyal and noble freemen, greetings
يا ولاة الأمور في الأمة اليوم
O governors of the nation's affairs
من كعبد العزيز أقوى على الده
Like Abdu'l-Aziz I face my fate with strength,
تبت يا خمر عنك كرها وقد كنت
I renounced you, o wine, though once you were
من نصيري على عشيرِ نوار
Who will protect me from the tribe of Noor?
أعجب القوم ما كتبت وهالا
The people were amazed by what I wrote
ذكرتك إبراهيم والثغر عابس
I remembered you, Ibrahim, while the lips were frowning,
يحسدني القوم على أنني
The people envy me for having
بعثت بكتب الطفل منك هدية
You sent me books for the child as a gift
عباس يا ابن المالكين
Abbas, O son of the just rulers
أسرعت من حنانها تطفئ النار
حال دائي بين القوافي وبيني
عانقت خصمك وهو خصمي مرغما
إن عقلي الصافي وقلبي الرحيما
ليس لي عند من يضيفني غير
سلام الورى أم عيدك اليوم نكبر
خل ذكر العقيق والزوراء
تحية تملأ الدنيا ورضوانا
تمضي بميثاق السلام وترجع
كم جاهل نال مالا بعد متربة
كم رحلة لم أستفد منها سوى
أنا فتى الكون أنا ابن الشمس
ذكرى جلوسك مظهر الأوطان
رعيا لما أجملت من حسنات
