1. The hearts' longing for the absent beloved,
And their hope for the returning riders.

2. The ship has cast its anchors and ended
Roaming the realms, the wanderer satisfied.

3. And Egypt has received the vast sea at its command,
Its entity and successive glories.

4. If you have surrendered, it is to the Merciful Redeemer,
Or drawn near, it is to the Generous Giver.

5. O you who fill the world with dew and benevolence,
Your hands are too lofty for the calculator's reckoning.

6. Look upon the people whom you have prepared
For glory, the grooming of the refined aspirant.

7. The lofty palaces of your abodes have made you
Independent of elevated plateaus or dunes.

8. The fortune of cities and gardens from you does not
Make you forget the fortune of plains and meadows.

9. Wherever you went, you had magnanimity, and your
Praises suffice as gain for the earner.

10. In every kingdom, a king gives you his affection
For your superiority and merits.

11. Worthy of whom its castles smells is
What they drew near of finery and feasts.

12. Your caravan did not arrive in East or West
Except for the benefit of Easts and Wests.

13. And your messengers loved to ask about the protected
And goodly sons, of fine traits and sides.

14. The obstinate have returned to you seeking approval,
And your time has come with the repentant’s humility.

15. The factions have united around you and converged
In a doctrine, cutting off other doctrines.

16. They have perfected that conversation, though it is
The certainty of a doubter, and rest for the restless.

17. Worthy of whom the angels bustle about
Is the people's striving to him in processions.

18. O successor of the Sultan, you go after him
And come between battalions and stars.

19. They praised your position among them, and you praised him,
And strove in their counting and trials.

20. You brought near to them everyone distant, just as
You carried out on their behalf the reward of every drawer near.

21. Until you obtained for them the best means
In every kingdom and the strongest side.

22. And you supported them with advice, with support like your grandfather’s,
No oars or barges higher for them.

23. You submit to them the trusts
You have fulfilled and the duty of a right and obligation.

24. You supported their new rule, united
In God among non-Arabs and Arabs.

25. And you saw how the Imam filled their sky
After the passing of clouds and darkness.

26. Indeed, I fear for the waking of enemies
That it will overwhelm them on a defeating day.

27. The day did not flee them into nightfall
Except to pelt them with piercing flames.

28. Secure safety from the disobedience of dissenters,
This dutiful one, and from the hatred of foreigners.

29. O you true to your promise, gone is he who
Shook the country with his false threat.

30. For you, from the loyal, fortresses
And regiments in multitudes upon multitudes.

31. For Egypt’s extremists, the matter which
They rebelled over is your restraint of the persistent.

32. What they feel out is destined
For them, not the fleeting imagination.

33. Drawing near his hopeful cautiously—does
The oar know aught but the rider of the sea?

34. Never! For the sincere to dread
After your smile at the scowling wrathful.

35. If the stay of Egypt's guests is long, then her patience
Is stronger and better than the hasty attacker's weakness.

36. From the beloved’s affection to them,
No aloofness have you found.

37. Far apart are the forces of the transgressing aggressor
And the humbleness of the arriver seeking her.

38. The skill of the peaceful rulers tames them,
Better and more beneficial than the reproacher’s arguing.

39. And if you grant them safety, you gain their departure,
And for Egypt the bridle of the companion.

40. Many a predator that preyed on them
Only with fangs and claws of theirs.

41. And if every peaceful one desired your bounty,
Then every warrior has tested your blade.

42. If you repelled, you are the stronger repeller,
And if attracted, you are the more able attractor.

43. True is the right, if its owner prolongs his patience,
To grow against the tyranny of the victorious tyrant.

44. The portion of devourers of hearts, if they harden,
Is the portion of drinking from iron that melts.

45. Egypt is not narrow for whoever roams it
One day, nor the blessed Nile stingy with its flooding.

46. What you built for it and fortified
Remains, despite the vanishing days.

47. Ramadan, of its heralds, is hurrying—
What guidance and wishes you have accustomed it to!

48. For you, with God as its aid, is
The hopeful's wish and the monk's piety.

49. To the throne, I am but a scribe, and the pride
Of rule satisfies the ambition of the scribe.

50. In your nobility, I have a faithful belief
That spares you the might of the slashing sword.

51. And if I have filled my innermost being with loyalty,
Then you have filled my saddlebags with bounty.

52. Were it not for your noble witness of me, that
Raised rhymes—my talents would have been blamed.

53. Were it not for your pleasure in the country and its people,
I would have left it wrathfully, though it is my beloved.

54. I grasped the means to you as generous
Until I reached, through them, the nobility of my hopes.

55. So call people to the Most High, and answer them—
O best caller to people, most responsive!
