1. O two poets, exchanging poetry
And sharing ideas and thoughts

2. Debating over wine and differing
On drinking it or leaving it better

3. One sees it good so endorses it
Seduces while the other makes excuses

4. You made the readers confused
Their minds could not have patience

5. And they wondered and doubt overcame them
Should we follow the prohibition or the order?

6. Until when their ways differed
They sent me their scrolls in succession

7. What do you think so you guide us
For you among us are the most wise and knowing

8. Wine tests characters through it
So the sweet and bitter become evident

9. The manners of the foolish improve through it
In kindness and it humiliates the ignorant fool

10. It makes miserable and makes happy thus it is similar
In its judgement to fate and the days

11. Not everyone infatuated with it is a hero
Disobeying desires and overpowering intoxication

12. This one sells his guidance for it
And that one permits white and yellow [gold] for it

13. And this one protects from its harms
The honour of status and sanctity

14. O you who prohibit it, you have betrayed it
None like you knows betrayal

15. Have you forgotten our night when
A brunette hid us with a veil of sand?

16. And longing pulls us and drives us
And our hearts are its prisoners

17. Until we sought help from the wine for a
Night whose darkness I feared would bring dawn

18. So it roused us with an intoxication that
Ignited embers among the limbs

19. And we scorned then to
Repel the slanderers and be safe from evil

20. So the guards were enraged and kindled
When they saw us approaching the homes

21. What happened? Did they frighten anyone
Among us who then fled from them in panic?

22. We called them so they dispersed in terror
And imagined us an army in multitude

23. We continued circling her palace passionately
Describing the love and complaining of estrangement

24. Until she looked out and said
Who in the dark is reciting poetry?

25. It is us who your beauty has captured
By the hand of beauty so we suffered harm

26. It is us whose tears it has caused
To flow down our cheeks in streams

27. So she had mercy on us after harshness
When she saw our secret revealed

28. And walked to us stumbling drunkenly
Putting the gazelle to shame and outshining the moon

29. She welcomed us, smiling
Her greeting casting a spell

30. We remained as chastity loves so we did not
Drink wine or commit sins

31. We gained nothing but her conversation as a fruit
To quench thirst and heal the burning longing

32. And the bonds of love tied firmly
To last its covenant a lifetime

33. And you remained infatuated with her
Composing poetry describing her charms

34. And gained glory in eloquence pure
Spreading its fame among the people

35. You did not abstain from the daughter of vineyards
Has she not granted you high rank?

36. Were it not for her refinement of your mind
You would not be named lord of poetry and poets

37. So drink the cups and repeat inebriation
As long as your fresh green branch remains

38. I drink it even if they gather against it
Faults and increasingly condemn

39. And it pleases me to be accused by it
I remain accused by it, seduced
