1. Passion seized him, so he danced
Not remembering God on high

2. Like a camel freed of its load
When its nose rope is untied

3. I said, "Do you seek by this dance
Communion with God most high?"

4. "This is the best that one who hopes
For perfection can occupy -

5. That lets the soul leave to the body
Heavy shackles that weigh it down

6. So his coin slipped from his hand
As he wandered in fantasy

7. And one of the folk saw it and hid it
Deceitfully making it his own

8. And the Shaykh sensed what had occurred
And fell ill in invalidity

9. And called out loudly for help
Until his heart was wearied by plea

10. I said, "O you who weep, ascetic like you
Over a mere coin gone astray

11. Why does remembrance not occupy you
To make you forget your dismay?

12. Cast off your pretentions that let
Illusions hold such mastery

13. For it's just your self in your body
That refuses to pass away."
