1. Do not think that this rain will benefit
The land of Egypt, though the East expects it,

2. The water is but tears of people turned
By tyranny of the foreigner to torrents.

3. The thunder is the beating of their hearts,
The lightning is the fire within them burning,

4. The winds are but their spirits, driving out
The darkness of the soul, remorselessly turning.

5. Woe to thee, Egypt, what will planning do
If, when we plead, our voice drowned in the rain.

6. This is the punishment of people whose lives
Were led in diverse ways, discordant, vain.
