And those in charge deserted us

And the angry get satisfied

4. What once was yearning
Has now become a tumult

5. Those looking ahead
Have turned the page on the past

6. Some leaned north
Others leaned south

7. On everything we still
Remain opposed

8. Destiny didn't reconcile us
In front of the victors

9. Today they changed the path
To a path that tries us

10. And prolonged strife
Between fathers and sons

11. Those estranged from their own folk
For years met animosity

12. Each found in the other
An ally against this

13. Those persecuted today
Will seek revenge tomorrow

14. And those who gloat over the miserable
Will encounter gloating themselves

15. The people's tricks and scheming
Still turn in their old ways

16. They set them up like traps
And prepare them like an ambush

17. They made equals of the last
And the first

18. We don't know who they acquit
And who they blame

19. The fate of the peaceful
Is like the fate of the rebellious

20. The old rulers were
Harsh yet kind

21. They warded off madness
By dismissal and appointment

22. At the one who divided them
They went for arbitration

23. They thought change a relief
That might keep them safe

24. They pursued it frantically
Imploring

25. The prominent opponent they placated
Without celebration

26. Do they know who this newcomer is
Among them?

27. Is it the angel's work
Or the kingdom's affairs?

28. A gift went by unnoticed
And the givers took it back

29. A deception that does not cease
To blind the heedless

30. Where is freedom today
For Egypt that called for it?

31. And the share for the holy land
That they demand?

32. What life is there under
The rule of the colonizers?

33. Four decades have passed
When they could have been four

34. Perhaps this is a warning
That shakes the ministers

35. And a trial after which
The disputants make peace

36. Partisanship is the hidden
And chronic disease

37. What will the present do
After the departed?

38. A decision whose era
Has passed causes others

39. We hope proper work
Will be

40. It's enough that the constitution was disabled
Or the oath undone

41. The respite between warring
Brothers

42. And if the law is not implemented
By its makers

43. The old are like the new
The memorizers like the scribes

44. What remains eternal in life
Is the system of reformers

45. Sound opinion is not possible
Without those who act on it

46. We have our ways
Not what newcomers legislate

47. Fear immoderation
Of the ambitious transgressors

48. Be content with the possible
Foreseen by the moderate

49. Those demanding conditions
End with what they suggest

50. The hasty are now like
The deliberate

51. That which they rose high with
Remains conjecture and doubt

52. After cheer, the optimists
Frowned

53. Whose is the poetry and clear revelation today?
We, after trying, refuse

54. To be submissive
How many we raised through praise

55. And forgot!
We entrusted them with the covenant

56. But found no trustee
What we gave them

57. Did not win hearts or eyes

58. Those tales have passed
Though they were passions

59. Where are the leaders of the people
And the allied leaders?

60. You have all exercised
The ruler's troubles

61. What did the few gain
That the many did not?

62. The most deserving of forgiveness
Are those in command

63. Do you ready armies and fortresses
For tomorrow's war?

64. Many warners have come
From every atmosphere

65. Egypt hasn't thought of it
While it occupies the world

And we will be forced into it

67. Like an unwilling war
Do we know now where

68. We are headed?
I am not of conventions

I was never on one side

70. At one time, and another later
My principle guided me

71. Faithfully and loyally
It molded me for the noble nation

I see in its unity a whole
