1. On what basis does the dispute between you recur,
And peace prevailed but for a night with you?

2. Morning dawns with rancor and anger,
While the evening passes with intimacy and consent.

3. A return to a wound you expand,
To distract you after it had healed.

4. And where are the covenants you came with,
If they contain no transgression or pardon?

5. Does the valley know what you do?
What the Almighty affirms and what He erases?

6. What the journey and distance were entrusted to Him,
And what prohibition and allowance were left to Him?

7. An enemy has no defence but your unity,
If the sword and spear fail him in war.

8. Every patriot, loyal to his country and people,
Is generous, his eyes and heart sublime.

9. Leave dividing the spoils before they fall,
For neither striking nor gathering nor sharing is sound therein.

10. Each party has its own view and reckoning,
While I have among you toil, ease, and exertion.

11. If my advice and counsel do not benefit you,
The admonition of events and of counsel itself suffices.
