1. My knowledge and your knowledge from learning and experience
Is that youth has passed in the path of old age

2. Worry has not left our bodies and strength
For us to strive with after discipline and refinement

3. We have become content with our dignity and honor
As we are content with food and drink

4. We see wishes seduce and deceive us
For if our aspirations attain lies

5. So how we strived for a fortune that was hidden
And now has become unveiled to us

6. And if the eyes of our cradle days saw it
We would not have turned to anything but toys

7. If the land was devoid of what it threw
How does my rising and setting benefit me

8. My hope and despair have become reasons for my death
They are equal to me, whether good or bad

9. Two opposites, one pushes me and the other pulls me
So neither pushed nor pulled patience remains

10. If only I had some of the ignorance of the laughing ones to
The injustice of events, I would not grieve for the stricken

11. Whether they come near, they are bored, or go far, they blame
And I am confused between distancing and drawing near

12. If my wisdom bears fruit among the people of Egypt, then I am
Pleased with them for compliance and acceptance

13. I care less for wealth without effort
For them and I distance myself from anger and reproach

14. And if I had the power to do good like
He who does evil, my undeserved revenge would not be sought

15. I am not preoccupied with the pains of my soul
From a companion who complains, troubled by pain

16. There was no pact when youth
One day preceded the white hairs of his eyes over mine

17. Listen, my brother, to a brother crying over the loss of a brother
Of faded youth, true love, beloved

18. One who gathered in a soul noble traits
To piety and abstinence from wine and openness to foreigners

19. One who would read our poetry and praise us
Until we slept satisfied and eager

20. One who did not seek harm to his side with injustice
And did not soften to an undefeated opponent

21. Wait, our farewell, and life is troubled
In the wings of a night, the rough sea frightened

22. You used to get angry when a youth was eulogized to you
And now my manner in your prohibition pleases you

23. If we were created for manners and generosity
Then we were also created for thought and torment

24. Their ignorance increases our compassion for people
We are strange in an age of strangeness
