1. Whether people see evil or good from us,
While they are heedless or awake,

2. Some violate the peace treaty,
While others refrain without ratifying it.

3. Today the Nile region breathes relief,
While the south remains grieved and sad.

4. Did time know a war like the one that engulfed
Those eight followed by eighty?

5. It is a craft kings take pride in
Over subjugated subjects who obey.

6. Was it an inherited disease in dynasties
Whose cures exhausted the efforts of blacks?

7. What were the greatest sins of mankind, and
The most precious sacrifices and offerings?

8. Where are the thrones and crowns, I ask them
About the tyrannical despotic kings.

9. Who erected their homes
And filled those plazas with blood,

10. Who wrongfully seized the belongings of others
Do these usurpers still remember that?

11. Or screaming from a war they fled
To a peace that increased the anxieties of the terrified,

12. In the right, deceitful treaties of peace
And on the left, the shackles of the enslaved.

13. Where are the terms and their executors?
Or were those the deceptions of the misguided?

14. Are these the fruits of victory produced
By the sincere enlightened reformers?

15. None prevails today except one who will support tomorrow
With his might and vocals the subjugated.

16. Great leaders bowed to Wilson
And where are Wilson’s judgments today?

17. He lured the desert with its independence but then
Abandoned it while they wander astray in their illusion.

18. Does today’s world seek what
The prophets never aspired for in the ancient world?

19. And the earth changes, not the same earth, taking
Devout angels instead of these demons.

20. Obsessions filled the optimists’ souls and exceeded them,
While the dreamers roamed aimlessly.

21. In every age, truth lacks support
Unless demanded through mighty determination.

22. So the armed is the feared whose side
The unarmed defeated misguided leans.

23. People changed morals and directions.
The earth changed formation and color.

24. Today the sound of cannons and swords is followed by
The sound of feelings, accord and assurance.

25. With the grudges of nations removed,
The principles, not the conquerors, opened the way.

26. But the aftermath of defeats and losses is what
Would drive the Bolsheviks back and forth.

27. They suffered tyranny in the country and broke free
After the oppression as noble revolutionaries.

28. And they did not accept after their Tsar
Except to be Tsars in it or knights.

29. The people have excuses in every turmoil;
Whether they erred or they got it right.

30. I do not know if—while man is blamed—
They are reformers or opportunists.

31. Yes, the team that the destroyers delegated,
Seeking the team that enacted laws.

32. Freedom intoxicated the minds of the world, so what
A smarter madness and more generous insanity!

33. Socialism has the aftermath if it includes
All the peoples and their neighbors.

34. So neither the multitudes belong to the few,
Nor the few belong to the multitudes.

35. We do not see one whose coffers are filled,
With musical bands while thousands starve.

36. Nor do we see a jewel on an arbitrator’s head,
While the hearts of the oppressed aspire to it.

37. Oh you who gained nothing but
That expected and assumed from war!

38. You survived its calamities, yet you do not
Recall those comrades who did not make it.

39. They extended the rails for you at every stage,
And cleared its mounds easily for you.

40. And stationed for your enemies a specific goal;
And joined the Nile to Jordan River securely.

41. You said the Turks came to invade and conquer you,
So we repelled them in retreat.

42. And how we blamed a nation for your sake,
While to us they are the beloved loyalists.

43. You said no nation gained freedom without blood,
So we shed it sacrificially.

44. And from our blood in Egypt your soldiers gained
What none gained from it in Palestine.

45. Did you wash the sins of the innocent with it?
Or do the sins of the innocent remain?

46. Do you belittle people in your presence,
And favor over them the water and mud?

47. Awake to guard Egypt and Sudan—a farm
Where laborers are exploited.

48. You inherited your adversary dead and your companion alive
Yet you still roam the land looking for more.

49. You have owned its prosperous civilization,
Yet you narrow in the one complaining to you.

50. Do you deny what they attained in your time,
Of experiences and modernization?

51. You tried restricting Egypt for some time,
So try freeing Egypt for a time.

52. You secured Egypt in what secured you,
So what do you still fear for Egypt?

53. You said Egypt is India’s gateway so if
The gateway is lost, we lose India, bewildered.

54. Is there any path to India but Egypt,
Filled with desires or filled with expatriates?

55. India’s people threaten it and its neighbor,
Yet India’s path remains secure.

56. Fear us in Sudan and give us our wishes,
For our wishes can never harm you.

57. We will meet you with the hearts of the sincere,
As you meet us with the hearts of the reassured.

58. People's interests are stronger than their sentiments;
Wherever it moves, they move.

59. So the antagonisms of enemies do not last,
Nor do the friendships of allies.

60. Often a people's adversary becomes their companion,
And often the evil-doers have a good end.

61. Perhaps the one who granted the Germans your peace
Makes you forget the past and makes us forget.

62. Perhaps He who changed the might of the Romans to mercy
For the Turks will make you pleased with us and us with you.

63. An inch for one with a right is better than
The provinces of the oppressive tyrants.

64. And a single person fulfilling his leadership
Is better for him than rebellious groups.

65. What do you ask of Egypt when its issues have shaken
India, China, the Hind and Sind?

66. With the sword and fire your soldiers call upon people,
Yet you ask the fallen to respond!

67. Remove the shackles from us and request a discussion;
You will see Egypt’s evidence and proofs.

68. Some nations may accept your call while
Egypt’s people reject with discontent.

69. If only the one who denied the Germans their purpose
Would deter nations other than them, not caring,

70. And if only the one who empowered and enriched a nation
Would care for and protect the poor.

71. Do you shed blood for the oppressed
While speaking of the needy with resentment?

72. Did you fulfill the covenant for Egypt
As you kept the covenant with Belgium, loyal?

73. How you admired the dignity of the free,
Whether they were allies or adversaries!

74. So have you mentioned and exalted for us a purpose,
As you mentioned and exalted Washington?

75. How the hero begets lofty events,
And events beget heroic men!

76. We were the era’s entrusted with you
And the time for repayment came, so are you fulfilling?

77. Everyone reasonable has recognized Egypt’s right,
So are you recognizing it?

78. You insisted on its independence, so towards
What purpose have you become determined regarding it?

79. Are you granting Egypt all it requested,
Or taking in portions and allotments?

80. If you lift your protection from the Nile Valley,
What other name follows it in what you call it?

81. And if you consider an alliance instead,
Who can guarantee us the equals’ rights?

82. We are incapable of the duties of an ally or
A partner while you take more and more.

83. The adjacency of the strong and its partnership
Is nothing but the sparrow beside the falcon.

84. Call the people of Egypt your equals and leave
Egypt’s governors as kings or sultans.

85. Leave it to equivalents whose experiences
Suffice, not requiring advisors’ instructions.

86. They will sacrifice for Egypt even if its crops complain,
And its Nile runs low and washes away.

87. Even if it flows diverting in the desert,
And remains stored beyond the dam.

88. Egypt’s free men, its free women will match them;
As we hope, they are the redeemers.

89. Praying women matching praying men.
Purifying women matching purifying men.

90. Has Egypt seen its call stir before today
The stooped-over helper to the rescue?

91. They carried the live coals to the serious glory, and they bore
Nothing but greetings and winds.

92. And whenever the pyramids heard the rumbling thunder,
They relieved what frightened them with anthems and tunes.

93. These are manifestations of the souls' faith, and this is
The truth of struggle, and its spirit within us.

94. We are prepared today for accord between you,
And us for we are prepared.

95. Grant us the same rights granted yourselves,
So you may rest assured with us or relieve us.

96. Our relations are up to our passion,
And our affairs are only in our hands.

97. We wish you a good nation on earth,
Not degraded and disgraced.

98. Best for you and all people is that you
Be as we are in goodness.

99. O you who gather their matters across the sea,
And walk to Egypt with gossip.

100. You remain loyal to the solid covenant,
As we remain on the covenant and pact.

101. You traveled while the hearts of loyalists are yours,
And you return to the Valley hopeful.

102. Truth in every valley finds support.
Whether it dawns in London or Berlin.

103. Your efforts are well-intended in every kingdom,
And best is Egypt’s independent people.

104. Whoever does not see today his place in civilization,
Will not find tomorrow a world or religion.

105. And we are most qualified to care for our homelands;
To fulfill the measurements and scales in them.
