أقر قومك ما تنوي وتعتزم

1. Tell your people what you intend and plan
And exalt what they saw of it and what they knew

١. أقر قومك ما تنوي وتعتزمُ
وأكبروا ما رأوا منه وما علموا

2. With your share the days became sound and complete
For you are the resolutions, the days, and the ambitions

٢. صحت بحصتك الأيام واكتملت
لك العزائم والأيام والهمم

3. Take the path as you wish for a period
For which this nation congratulates the nations

٣. خذ الطريق كما ترضى إلى أمد
عليه تغبط هذي الأمة الأمم

4. O guest of Aswan who desires its air but has
Behind Aswan an ambush and a refuge

٤. يا ضيف أسوان يبغي جوَّها وله
وراء أسوان مرصاد ومعتصم

5. And a nation that receives from its fates
To it what the confidences desired and seizes

٥. وأمة تتلقى من مصائرها
إليه ما شاءت النجوى وتغتنم

6. It divided between the people of both valleys their Nile
And it is the guarantee of unity between them

٦. قسمت بين بني القطرين نيلَهما
وإنه لضمان الشمل بينهم

7. Their emotions flow in the course of its runoff
And they are the covenants of time and promises

٧. تجري عواطفهم مجرى موارده
وإنها لعهود الدهر والذمم

8. Why be angry at what you are doing
They returned to it thirsty after they were deprived

٨. ما للغضاب على ما أنت صانعه
عادوا إليه عطاشاً بعد ما حرموا

9. And why did they fear after they clamored
The long eras of time passed over them or they grew bored

٩. وما لهم خافتوا من بعد ما صخبوا
طالت عليهم عهود الدهر أم سئموا

10. It is enough pleasure for you what you regained before them
Of Egypt’s right and what you maintained after them

١٠. كفى رضاً لك ما استرجعت قبلهم
من حق مصر وما استبقيت بعدهم

11. And what you refused them except that they
Refuse all that is built by others

١١. وما أبيت عليهم غير أنهمُ
يأبون كل الذي يبنيه غيرُهم

12. The issue of the Stone was it their matter or their means
And for the Prince did they want money or was it for them

١٢. قضية الحجر كانت أم وسيلتهم
وللأمير أرادوا المال أم لهم

13. They assumed power, confusing judges with it
Would you have wished except what they judged with

١٣. تناولوا الحكم يطرون القضاة به
وهل تمنيت إلا ما به حكموا

14. Be it acquittal or be it forgiveness
Both matters are respected

١٤. إن كان تبرئة أو كان مغفرة
ما سرهم فكلا الأمرين محترم

15. They said our innocence is for both nations together
They did wrong, both nations wronged by them

١٥. قالو براءتنا للأمتين معاً
هبهم أساءوا أكل الأمتين هم

16. Do not change your order if they gain victory
Nor alter your affairs if they are defeated

١٦. ولا تبدل في أمر إن انتصروا
ولا تحول في شأن إذا انهزموا

17. Your supreme self expected their salvation
And justice belied what they assumed and claimed

١٧. توقعتْ نفسك العليا نجاتهم
وكذب العدل ما ظنوا وما زعموا

18. And how can the law not encompass an incident
From them and from what you enacted of pardon and generosity

١٨. وكيف لا يسع القانون واقعة
منهم ومما سننتَ العفو والكرم

19. And may the intercessor they resort to for help
Be who they claimed takes vengeance

١٩. وقد يكون الشفيع المستعان لهم
من ادعوا أنه الجبار ينتقم

20. If they were punished they would proclaim they went
As victims and spread that they were wronged

٢٠. لو عوقبوا لأذاعوا أنهم ذهبوا
ضحية وأشاعوا أنهم ظلموا

21. And that it was the war they waged for their nation
Redemption though their eyes never saw war

٢١. وأنها الحرب خاضوها لأمتهم
فدى وما شهدت حرباً عيونهم

22. And if you hold them one day to account for what they did
Aggression against you, then you have magnified their status

٢٢. وإن تؤاخذهمُ يوماً بما فعلوا
بغياً عليك فقد عظَّمت شأنهم

23. They would have deserved congratulations and regards
If suspicions of these accusations did not recur

٢٣. كانوا أحق بتكريم وتهنئة
لو لم تعد شبهات هذه التهم

24. And would they themselves speak of return one day
When they never believed in surrender from their time

٢٤. وهل تحدثهم بالعود أنفسهم
يوماً وما صدقوا منها بأن سلموا

25. And the case remains from their time one
In which you are both opponent and judge

٢٥. وما تزال عليهم من زمانهم
قضية أنت فيها الخصم والحكم
