هات يا ابن الكرام بنت الكروم

رمى بسهام ناظره فؤادي
Roses are red, violets are blue
حبيت ثواب الصوم يا ابن الأكارم
You loved the reward of fasting, O son of the generous
قالت أما كنت قبل اليوم تعشقني

عفا اللَه عنها ربة المقلة النجلا
May God forgive her, the lady of the eyeliner,
تبارك من أعطى الوزير سياسة
Blessed is he who gave the minister wisdom
يا رب أسألك النجاة من الهوى
O Lord, I ask You for salvation from passion
كل العيون من الظباء العين
Roses are red, violets are blue
شقيق الروح بعدك من نصيري
My soul's companion, without you who will aid me?
لله غانية قامت تودعني
A song arose for God bidding me farewell
جاورت يا لحدها في الشام يحياها
In Damascus she dwelt, may God preserve it,
يقبل العبد من أعتاب مولانا
The servant kisses the threshold of our Master
أفاز من العبير بحبتين
He won two drops of fragrance
نظر الهلال جبينك النوراني
The crescent looked upon your luminous brow
الحمد لله قد عمت مبرته
Praise be to Allah, His mercy has spread
يا من لتلخيص البيان اقتنى
O you who gained
تخوف مسك الخال من نار خدها
The mole on her cheek feared the fire of her cheek
عين الشآم عيون الملك ترعاها
The eyes of Damascus, the eyes of the king who tends them
سل جيرة البان عن حسناء ناديه
Ask the neighbor of dew about the beautiful girl of his camp
أنسيت ما بذلت لك الأخيار
I forgot the favors I did for you
ما فاض من فلك الزجاجة نور
When light overflowed from the celestial sphere of the wine bottle,
صاح ولي الدجى وصاح المطوق
The night's companion cries and the collared one shrieks,
سفرت فأشرق غربها والمشرق
Her departure brought light to its west, and the east
عين الغزالة تحت عين غزال

شادية افتخري بدار سلام

على خد موسى ما أقلت كؤوسه
On Musa's cheek, how few were his cups
يوم الجلوس الذي سرت به البشر
The day of ascension when humankind rejoiced,
أيا شبل نصر الله تهناك رتبة
O cub of the victory of God, there is a rank
والله ما التحف الحزين بضره
The sorrowful heirloom with its harm, indeed
فاز ابن طنوس الهمام برتبة
The noble son of Tannus has won a rank
أجرى نجيب ابن بولاد الدموع دما
Najeeb, Ibn Boulad's son, shed tears of blood
ضريحك يا حبيب غدا جنانا
Your tomb, my beloved, has now become a paradise
قد أصبحت تحسد الأحياء موتاها
The living now envy the dead their demise
علمت عيني البكا يا موت في سنة

يا حافر اللحد لا تعجل على ولدي

لما سرى ابن السيروان لربه

يا كوكبا سكن الثرى

حديقة الأخبار شاكت فما
The garden of news has withered, so
نصرت لواء الحق أيدك العدل
You upheld the banner of truth, supported by justice,
ساد الغصون قوامها الريان
The branches spread their verdant gown
لأكرم من عيد يروح ويغتدي
More generous than any fleeting holiday
ضح الهموم ببارق الصهباء

يا ليلة الأنس التي احتلك الضحى
Oh night of intimacy which dawn has occupied
دعوني أسامي بابن سامي فقد غدا

كفانا الله من شر الذوائب

قال للمليحة لا تعظم ردفها

تبارك اللَه الذي كملك
Blessed is Allah, who has given you sovereignty
دعاني للوداع بلا عناق
He bid me farewell without an embrace
أشكو فتسرع بالملام فأطرق
I complain, so you hastily blame me, and I fall silent
لم أنس غانية وقفت ببابها
I have not forgotten a maiden who stood at her door
قامت تستر بالمنديل طلعتها
She rose, cloaked in her veil, her radiance revealed
وما اسم رباعي تميل نفوسنا
A pleasing four letter word that touches our souls
حورية في زي حورانية
A maiden in the garb of nymphs appeared
شقت دجى فرعها عن فرقها السحري
The night's veil parted, unveiling its branches,
لي حيلة في من ينمم
I have a trick for whoever sleeps
بشرقي اللوى عانقت شمسا
With my beloved I embraced the sun in the east,
ما أطمع الناظر الوسنان بالرجلِ

أنا الذي اخترت آل الشام لي ندما
I am the one who chose the people of Syria as companions,
قولوا لمن ناح على مائت
Tell those who mourn the departed
على ثغر من أهواه للآس آية
On the lips of my beloved a mark appears
دمع جرى أم عقيق سال من بصري
Tears flowed or liquid pearls fell from my eyes
لم أنس لو طال المدى
Though time may pass, I'll not forget
تعلم طرفها نوم الغزال

كيف السبيل لسلسبيل لماها

يا من تغازلني بعندم خدها

Blessings upon your sacred rank,
تبارك من حبا حنا غلاما
Blessed is He who gifted us with Hanna, a youth
وردية الخد وارت بالضنى علمي
My cheeks turned rose-hued from love's longing and pain
أمرت لك الأمر المطاع بأن ترى
I commanded you with absolute command to see
بشراك سوريا بذي
Your generosity doubles Syria's prosperity
وزير الخارجية دمت بدرا
The foreign minister remained shining
ماذا أقول وفيك كل
What can I say, for in you all
لو لم تنل من لماها الراح أنعاما
Had she not given me sips from her soft drink
إذا كان وجدي خافيا عن أحبتي
If my love is hidden from my loved ones
نجوم الثريا لا يهيم بها مثلي
The stars of chandeliers do not fascinate me like you,
لله حسن وحسنها الغض الذي
God has granted her beauty, and her youthfulness
ليس هذا الضريح إلا جنان
This shrine is but a paradise
أثار الصبح نحوك بالحضور
The dawn called to you with its presence,
ما نفحة الطيب وطيب النسيم
The scent of perfume and the sweet morning breeze,
نجم الصفا والإنس هل
The star of purity and humanity has risen
حب العيون السود يا سمر الدمى
Love for black eyes, O chestnut-colored idol,
يا قبة حول باري قبة الفلك
O dome encircling my Creator, the dome of the heavens,
ببها نقولا أشرق القطر
With joy we say the rain has fallen
أرى في صدغك المعوج دالا
I see in your curved cheek a letter dal
من خمرة الريق أم من خمرة القدح
Was it from the wine of saliva or from the wine of the cup?
بأبي وغيرِ أبي مخدرة
By my father and others' fathers intoxicated
عقدوا الشعور معاقد التيجان
They tied the feelings with crown ties
مولاي بالحسن الذي أعطيته
My Master, by the kindness you have given me
تبارك من أعلا شريعته الغرا
Blessed is he who exalted his noble law
قسما بأيام الصبا وصبية
I swear by the days of youth and a maiden
لله عائدة جادت بريق فم
A gift to God, brought forth a glimmer from my mouth
سموت لها والليل في قبضة الفجر
I soared for her while night was in dawn's grasp
شتان بين شجٍ يعذبه الهوى
How different a lover tortured by passion
شاهد وسبح خالق الحسن الذي
Roam and behold the Beauty's Maker, seen
يا قوم ما كذب العذول فصدقوا
O people, the alluring one did not lie so believe her
قالت معذبتي والروض مبتسم
She said, while the garden smiled at her torment
ما دام راشد لا يدوم غرور
As long as Rashid does not last arrogance
لما أتى حوران أستاذها
When her teacher came to Hawran
يا كوكبي فلك الجمال ذكاكما
O my planet, orbit of beauty your wisdom
فلق الملاحة من جبينك لاحا
The navigation has split open your radiant forehead
رأوا أثرا بماس الوجنتين
They saw a mark on my cheek
سألت دمشق الشام عن رونق الضحى
I asked Damascus, the Levant, about the splendor of dawn
اليوم بان العنا عن كل إنسان
Today the grace has been revealed to every human
ساد القنا بقوامه المتأود
With his upright stature he walked slowly,
وجائلة الوشاح كخوط بانٍ

دنا عائدي مني وقد خارت القوى
My strength has waned, and yet desire returns anew,
يا رب ما حيلتي قد قل مصطبري
O Lord, my patience has worn thin
أغرق الطرف بالدموع وأعرق
I drowned my eyes in tears and perspired
لله غانية حظيت بها فما
For Allah, I have a songbird I was blessed with
يهنيك يا مولاي عودك سالما
I congratulate you, my Master, on your safe return
تقول وقد سقطت على حماها
You say, as you fall upon her cheek
يا نسمة الطيب من حيت برياها
O breeze of fragrance from her abode
نور الثريا خبا تحت الخبا الحجري
The light of the chandelier faded under the stone canopy
ترحل أيها الصبر الجميل
Patience, my beautiful patience, it is time for you to leave
زهت زهو الغزالة في خباها
The beauty of the doe gleamed in her hiding place
لله غانية حظيت بوصلها
She came to me, a gift from God, when we met
يا ساكن اللحد صار اللحد رضوانا
O dweller of the grave, the grave has become a paradise
مات علم الفقه لما
The knowledge of jurisprudence died when
قلعت ضرسي قبل ضرس الجهل
I pulled out the tooth of ignorance
تاقت لصور ركائبي وتقدمت
My camels longed for the sight of her tents, so they marched ahead
حكمت لحظها على العشاق
For a moment it ruled over lovers,
وقائلة هل يسهل الحب والهوى
She asked, "Can love and passion come easily
من ديمة الكرم أم من ديمة الكرم
From the ever-flowing vine or from the vineyard
لو لم يكن جعل الرقاد محرما
Had not sleep been deemed forbidden
أيا كوكب الشرق الذي ران حبه
O planet of the East whose love
أفسدت صبري بإدخال الغرام على
You have ruined my patience by bringing love into
تطاول الليل يا ليلى على دنف
O Laila, the night lingers on an anxious soul
قالوا نراك تحب اليوم يافعة
They said, "We see you love a young maiden,
كأنما الخال بين الحاجبين فتى
As if the mole between the eyebrows were a youth
عجبت لمن يقول الشمس جارت
I'm amazed at one who says the sun has set
أكذا يكون مجاور الغزلان
Thus is a neighbor of gazelles
يا طائر البان غريدا على فنن
O bird of the valleys, sing your melodies,
عفا الله عن متري ابن شلهوب أنه
May God forgive Mitri ibn Shalhoub that he
ألا يوم كيوم الموجتينِ
Oh, a day like the day of the two seas
بقول الله يا خير البريا
By the will of God, O best of creation
يوم الجلوس على الأيام تياه
The day he sat upon the days adorned it
خليلي ما أحلى الجمال صفاه
My beloved, how sweet is the purity of his beauty,
قل لمن يعرف النباتات ما اسم
Say to he who knows the plants what name
الشام تحضن من أنطون مولاها
Damascus embraces those loyal to it from Antun
عيوني بالدموع الحمر جودي
My eyes shed red tears
طابت بطابيتا مضاجع غادة
Her final resting place was blessed, Ghadah's bed,
لولا اهتزا قوامك المياد
If your swaying form did not quiver,
قضى الشهم إبراهيم صولة فاندبي
The valiant Ibrahim passed away, so I wept for him
أصم ناعيك آذاني وأنساني
My ears are deaf to your wailing, and my humanity is numb
دعوت الغزال نهار السفر
I called the gazelle the day of departure
عفا الله عن هذا الطبيب فإنه
May Allah forgive this doctor, for he
ليس الضريح الذي واراك عن عيني
It is not the tomb that hides you from my eyes,
بك الملك ازدهى يا خير وال
The king rejoiced at your return, O best ruler,
أمن الفراق يراق دمعك احمرا
Do your tears shed for the pain of separation run red,
قالت فتاة الحي لما رنت
The girl from the neighborhood said when I winked,
بأبي موسوية واصلتني
By my father, Musawiyah, you have reached me
يا جند عثمانية
O Osmanli army
كل ما يشرى يزكى
Everything bought is made pure
سادت بأول سادة العرب
You were the first of the Arab leaders,
يا ريح قولي للذين تغيبوا
O wind, tell those who have been absent
أعادت علينا ليالي الطرب
The nights of joy have returned to us,
رد لا تخف من حمرة الورد
Do not fear the redness of roses
حسان المزايا لا حسان السواعد
The beauty of virtues, not the beauty of muscles,
يوم سعيد على الأيام يفتخر
A joyous day boasts over days
مولاي إن الفتى الشامي في مرض
My Master, the young Syrian man is ill
نفى المهيمن عنا لاعج الترحِ
The dominant one denied us not when stars declined,
قالوا لفاتنتي وقد رقدت
They said to my beloved as she slept,
قلب المتيم والظعون تسير
The hearts of the lonely and the gazelles wander,
ولدت معذبتي غلاما ليته
I gave birth to a tormented boy, if only
بابي رشا أبراده يمنية
My father a gentle rain, his right hand Yemeni
الحمد لله طاب الوقت واصطلحا
Praise be to God, the time is good and reconciled,
نسيم الصبح مر على فؤادي
The morning breeze passed over my heart
أتدري يا شقيق الروح تدري
Do you know, O soulmate, do you know
لله حسن وحسنها يوم النوى
God has beauty and her beauty on the day of intention
لعبت بعاشقها يد الوسواسِ
The hand of obsession played with her lovers
صب يحاول من لماك الراحا
The morning breeze tries to steal some comfort
غنت خلاخلها فقل لحمامة
Her anklets sang, so say to a dove
أهلا بذي الشرف الذي بقدومه
With your noble arrival, Damascus rejoiced
قالوا لنا البدر مكسوف فقلت إذن
They said the full moon is eclipsed, so I said:
ألا والذي لا يعبد العبد غيره
Behold, He who is worshipped by none but His servants,
مولاي ما في العين من ماء سوى
My Master, there is no water in the eye but
أو أجفانها المراض سكارى
Her languid eyelids intoxicated with sickness,
قالوا سما هذا النهار بنوره
They said the sky today with its light
جلت صفاتك عن مكانة شاعر
Your qualities transcend those of an eminent poet
أما آن أن ترضى العيون على المرضى
Should eyes be pleased at afflicted hearts' expense,
الحمد لله سرت كل عاصمة
Praise be to God who illuminated every capital
قلت للغادة التي كاد يدعو
I said to the maiden whose lover had almost called her,
يا ملجس الإجراء سد
O assembly of procedure, dam
أرى حيلتي في كل ما شئت يا نجلا
I see my stratagem in all I wish, O son
لا فارق الكرب المؤبد والبلا
Neither endless sorrow nor affliction depart
بآلي ومالي غادة أحمدية
With my wealth and possessions I wooed Ahmed's daughter,
قلت للغادة التي حنن الله
I said to the gazelle who softened her heart for us,
تلك نار توقدت
That fire was lit
خلع الصبابة من قلوب الناس
He stripped the turban from people's hearts
ما كان ألين من غصون البان
None were as soft as your branches, oh beautiful one,
بانت ليالينا الوسيمه
Our beautiful nights have passed
باريت في شوط الشجاعة رستما
You strode like Rostam in the field of bravery
بشهاب مجدك يا ابن أشرف من سما
With your glorious tail, O son of the most noble of stars
يا من به اللَه ثنى عزة الشرف
O you whom God has granted the honor of nobility
يقولون لما حل في الشام حامدا
They say that when he settled in Damascus, praising
رب البلاغة جبران الكحيل سما
Lord of eloquence, Gibran soared
يا قمرا أقبل من ديره
O moon that comes from his monastery
بروحي ذات حسن أسكرتني
With my soul, her beauty intoxicates me
يا من يصدق توبة الخود التي
O you who believes the repentance of the cheek that
مولاي وعدك جاز حد زمانه

الحمد لله بعد اليأس هل على

دام يوم الجلوس في كل عام
May the day of sitting each year endure
كرهت الهوى إن كنت لا أكره النوى
I have come to hate passion though I bear no grudge against the passionate one
أحمام روض أم حمام نضار
Is it a garden's doves or a bright dove house?
ترى ذكرت ليلى لويلتنا الغرا
Do you remember Layla and our nights of passion?
جنات عدن فتحت للقاك
Gardens of Eden are opened for you
لا غرو أن غدت الشآم نعيما
No wonder Damascus has become a paradise,
أتراه يصفح عن دمي

العدل جادك بالوسام السامي

O you who drinks in sorrow and grief
قالوا امدح السبع قلت السبع ممتدح
They said praise the lion, I said the lion is praiseworthy
أشرقت في الدجى شموس التلاقي
The suns of meeting dawned in the gloaming
عذيرك يا خيال المستهام
Your excuse, O fanciful imagination,
خلي لا تبعداني
Oh my two companions, do not keep me away
قولوا لمن قال إن الحكم في يده
Tell those who say that power is in their hand
يا رب ما لي طبيب
O Lord, I have no doctor
توارت بالحجاب فما ثناها
She was veiled, yet nothing could conceal her,
أزارتك المهفهة اللعوب
Your carefree dress fluttered,
يا آل جلق ما في غيدكم فنق
O people of Gulg, your singing holds no melody
آمنت أن هواها في الحشا قدحا
I believed her love in the desert was a spark,
من فضل ربي وإحسانات سلطاني
By the grace of my Lord and kindness of my Sultan
قال الطبيب وقد همى
The doctor said, as tears flooded,
أسرت جفونك يا سعد رقادي
Your eyelids have captivated my sleep, O Saad
مولاي عيد النحر تاه على السهى
My Master, Eid Al-Adha has arrived in delight
يا ربة الدوح غنت ربة الوتر
O mistress of the sand dune who sang
يحق لباغي الحب أن يطلب العذرا
The passionate lover deserves to plead for mercy,
برياض تفتخر الرياض على الورى
With gardens Riyadh takes pride before all
أوحدي أهواها لقد فتنت ألفا
She is the only one I love, for she has captivated a thousand hearts,
يا سادة رحلوا بالروح عن بلدي
O masters who have departed in spirit from my country
يا رب قل احتمالي
O Lord, grant me endurance
زادت سعاد بقربها بعدي
My happiness increased when I was near her
يا واقفا في ظل قبر
O you standing in the shade of a grave
وبيضاء الترائب من معد
With shimmering white clothing from Ma'add,
يا صاح إن الشموس النائيات ضحى
O friend, the distant suns left me at dawn
أرى زهرة الزمان غضبي على الطلا
I see the flower of time, my anger at the dew
قبلت ياقوت خديها وقلت لها
I kissed her ruby cheeks and said to her
جمعت من صور السادات أحسنها
I gathered the finest images of ladies
أيا خد كساب الذي طاب ورده
O cheek whose blossoming rose is fragrant!
نهود مثل رمان الجنان
Breasts like pomegranates of paradise
هلم لمثل خدك يا نديمي
Come, let us drink like your cheek, my boon companion
على لحد إبراهيم والغادة التي
By Abraham's tomb and paradise garden where
يا ربع لا بل الغمام ثراكا
O quarter, no, but the clouds have covered you
راح تكاد لها القلوب تطير
The one whose hearts almost fly for her sake,
يا غوث كل امرء أودى به الكمد
O succor of all who are undone by poverty
بروحي التي ضنت علينا بريقها
With my soul that was stingy with her radiance toward us
أفهمت ما قالت لنا الورقاء
The rosebush told us the truth
إلام أروم الصبر والصبر نازح
Why should I feign patience, while patience has fled,
وغريرة لون اللجين رأيتها
With skin the hue of soft mud I saw her
لما رأى روزا المصور أقبلت
When the painter saw Rosa approach
وخوط خصر كخيط الصبح معتدل
A form whose graceful waist is like morning's thread
بنور نجلكما آل العلا باهوا
With your son's light, the noble family rose high
حب الكنانة عن فروق ثناك
The love of earthly beauty or your Lord's love to bless you
إذا هجم الشتاء على النباتي
When winter's attack descends on the greensward,
نور الغزالة في العشية قد ظهر
The gazelle's light appeared at dusk
لم أنس يا عثمان عثمانية
I have not forgotten, Othman, the Othmania
أكرم بأكرم حبر من بني كرم
The most generous with the most generous ink, from the generous people
فؤاد الملك جالب كل فخرٍ
The king's heart brings every pride
قامت تعاطينا الشموس بأنجم
Our mornings offered cups
أنجوم ليل أم نجوم خدور

فديتك سطر الأمر المفدى
ألبابنا للحور أشبه
قالوا رأيت هلال العيد قلت لهم
خطرت فغناها حمام نضارِ
بعيني رأيت الماء ماء بكفها
يقولون خير الأعين السود صدقي
لله قوم كالرياض بشاشة
صب ياقوت الضحى في السحر
بأبي وبي القمر الذي فتن الورى
بروحي العندم الكاسي
قالت وقد جرح اليراع خديدها
أيها المقتدي بأحمق قس
تجلت لنا بكر تحلت بها بكر
لا حجة لكم ولا عذر
إذا سلت صوارمها الغيارى
قمر يطوف بكوكب سيار
مليكة مهجتي من آل فارس
أمانا من الألحاظ أيتها العذرا
أطور تابور أم عرش من النورِ
قولوا لأشياخ الهوى تلميذكم
باللَه يا ريح القبول تنفسي
لله غانية مرت بنا سحرا
رأيتك يا نقي الخد كاسي
والله ما الإصلاح إلا بدرة
فتك الجمال بضارب وبضارع
قوموا انظروا حكم الجمال البارع
حثوا الركاب فلم أجد لي حيلة
أحمامة الوادي بمنعرج اللوى
أرح جوادك هذا السلط قد خضعا
أفيقوا فهذا السيف في الهام قعقعا
قالوا حبيبك محسن فأجبتهم
نفس الرياض غدا عليك مطيفا
لا وعينيك والعهود السوالف
ذا صباح الصبوح يا مي أشرق
أسفرت عن جمالها للساقي
