1. I called the gazelle the day of departure
So the gazelles turned away when it was time to depart

2. And warned me of the slanderers of passion
And said "Peace be upon those who endure"

3. But that greeting did not cool my heart
Nor did caution hold back my tears

4. And when the camel litters came close
And farewell was near for those present

5. It wavered and the branches of saplings bent
It turned away and the mountains of the moon swayed

6. And my tears streamed down my cheeks
Like the outpouring of rain on one who is thankful

7. Imprison the corrupt people in misery
And make them firm in the trunks of trees

8. And drive them to the abode of the antelope
To the fire of hell and the valley of misery

9. A punishment from the Eternal One who
Brought misfortune upon those who disbelieve

10. So by the Shirwani he revived the laws
The God of existence and relieved harm

11. Thus arrogance vanished and wisdom returned
And happiness lived and bitterness died

12. And without the Judge of judges, formidable
On a woeful day and a ruinous one

13. A protector who is generous with the best of steeds
And the brown of hillsides and the red of sand dunes

14. And the ink of time which with eloquence
Made the essence of insight well known and famous

15. No free woman has given birth to his like
Nor has any ship on land carried his equal

16. So you, whose eloquence is at his door
Seeking refuge in masterpieces of literature

17. Why do you endure in a gathering
Where none besides you shows patience?

18. When will the companion of distinction call
During the darkness of night and dawn?

19. How can knowledge and ignorance be equal?
And guidance and misguidance be settled?

20. It is the turning of nights that necessitated
This submission and decree of fate

21. Or has Damascus seduced its visitors
With the black of eyes and the white of ink?

22. So woe to the passion that has harmed us
And beautiful is patience with what is decreed
