1. A night unveiling magic,
or clouds uncovering a moon,

2. or jasmine with its sprouts,
twisting the fragrance of poetry.

3. O Lord, she did not travel to correct
her hair on the day of travel,

4. to cover what her cheek revealed
with the ruby of veil.

5. And from shyness poured on it
incidents like pearls.

6. So she left it like a brazier
when cloaked with rain.

7. And she left me, from fear of disgrace,
O Protector, in danger.

8. I swore by the houri whom
I possessed, the hearts of mankind,

9. and by her slender stature and
the bud of her smile so charming,

10. Were it not for modesty, her cruel heart,
and my fear of hell,

11. I would not be satisfied with her affectionate looks,
and I would turn away from her like smoke in the night.
