1. I rejoiced, but not for any leisure of my own,
Nor for the diversions of Najd and the comforts of rest.

2. Rather, for some verses that gifted me with their full moon,
Muhammad, pride of the faith in eloquence,

3. Scion of the Trustee of God and the star
Upon whom God shed the light of prophecy.

4. He is the flowering meadow, but as for his ode,
It is a spring of lofty sciences, flowing with rhetoric.

5. Knowledge would have perished, had God not made him a sign
For reviving it, so that every sign might be alert to him.

6. The God of the Throne ennobled him with a store of wisdom
And created him a pearl for the best endowed with perception.

7. But he is a pearl from the pearl whereby
God chose the essence of the Imamate.

8. Why then should I give praise to one who became
The most worthy peer in censure and blame?

9. For this, by the oath of God, the bounty of the son of Ḥarrā’
Is sweeter and dearer than yesterday’s clouds.

10. Bounty is naught but to favor with half of it
The stranger, and devote its other half to kin.

11. Should I be praised for praising the Family—what have I brought
Other than duties made incumbent?

12. God refused that any but the Family of preeminence
Exalted over both substitute and successor should be honored.

13. Theirs is a charge that rises above every charge,
And a summit of glory that surpasses every summit.

14. But I stand apart from the religion of others—
So in the religion of Jesus, friend of the deaf, lies my comfort.

15. I will be folded in the Christian religion of Jesus son of Mary,
And I will raise the banner of intimate loyalty to it.
