1. By my father and others' fathers intoxicated
I attained not her affection though I schemed

2. In her eyelids from her coquetry is idolatry
And in her legs from her anklets are anklets

3. Love passed by her veil so it fell in love
With her, so in its place shyness stood

4. And she swayed so I reckoned her a moon
Lit by a branch beneath which is a mountain

5. I reproached her but heard from her mouth
Salt, so it was as if she were a kiss

6. And I called her to comfort but she distanced
Herself from me, saying to your mother confusion

7. This is forbidden, I won't drink it
My drinking is the milk of the camel, O man

8. By God, if I drank to be near it
And it brought me near to her, the thirst
