1. The branches spread their verdant gown
And bulbuls sang their trilling tone

2. A Bedouin girl whom craze misled
Toying with minds and hearts she shred

3. Had she let souls taste her lips' wine
They would have given their all, not declined

4. Upon her cheek a garden lies
For partridges, a paradise

5. Why roam the garden seeking flowers
When each part of her was bowers

6. Her cheek was rose and glances, narcissi
Her hair was myrtle, clothes jasmines

7. And her mole by perfume shaded
Paradises where wished hoarded

8. Watering spirits summer and winter
Spring and autumn with downpours tender

9. Had Yusuf gained a grain of her love
His gown's pockets bulbs would shove

10. And midst his ribs make dwellings wide
Where neither patience nor calm reside

11. I wonder how her curls make hearts crazed
Love her, foes she, all dazed

12. Yet she chides close-fisted hands
Though with her radiance she brands

13. I'll not forget, like moon shrouded black
Her gleam piercing veil turning it back

14. She hastens but censure clasps her neck
And in each lover's heart turmoil she'd wreck

15. Delicate is her slender waist, in accord with her hips
In her palms, comfort and aromatic herbs

16. She said, and tears in my eyes she detected
Tears are love's condition, she collected

17. In youth's days I was not ignorant, so why
Are you, when gray hairs are nigh?

18. My youth did not forbid what the Merciful's chest inspired
But I waited until pomegranates were ripe

19. And now, had her lips not sparked fire
Nor my eyebrows turned hoary attire

20. I'd have sipped the wine of her mouth's nectar
And talked with my frank neighbors

21. And from the generous prince's bounty given her chin
Gems without the prince's hand therein

22. A king whose grace makes rain drizzle and flowers bloom
Come alive and thorns perfume

23. If one fasted a month for his face
After Ramadan, and before, Shaban

24. Run to him, find bounties have dressed
In faith's robes, an honorable guest

25. Crowning you ere you implore
In his palms, beauty and favor galore

26. If you beseeched God safety by his name, you'd gain it
As did Noah's people, avoiding the flood's bane

27. Or if you turned away, igniting infernos
Like Lot's folk, midst the blazes burning

28. For he is the truthful patron who gives
Doing good, merciful, magnanimous lives

29. And God ordered loving him in every sense
And the Criterion on his father descends

30. For obeying him, disobedient hearts have stirred
With gardens bearing pardon's fruits conferred

31. And Jesus Christ's disciples sought his shade
Returning upright when bent and swayed

32. A lion who humbles with stroke of paw
His red-feathered enviers in awe

33. In his fist a coal ablaze with ire
For foes, and in gown a snake entire

34. He hastens while death's messenger beneath his feet lies
And the leopard and tiger his bloodstained ties

35. When he pounces both riders and steeds wilt
And when he pardons, both lambs and camels guilt

36. Had you not come to Algiers or heard
What caravans have you referred

37. Ask his sword and leave foes, for none
Who opposed his blades had tongue or breath

38. And ask the tongues, for they were palms that dropped
Fangs and teeth that gnashed and chopped

39. Their talks, their witness God sanctions
For they speak goodness that He ransoms

40. What adorned the world, and more, is for naught
As time and days have proven, unsought

41. Glorious is He who created light
So realms His grace and boons recite

42. And for the rising of His sun, angels bowed
And spheres, spirits, bodies vowed

43. One would think me drowned in praise
And say for rapture, no place nor phrase

44. If He all the worlds weighed, they'd tilt
And tip His essence would the scale's hilt

45. Does the word of truth seem like praise
O cub, whom 'Adnan's line did raise?

46. God knows your merit beyond
What minds or thoughts have donned

47. You whose sword enemies crave to die by
Keeping safe your mention, they vie

48. Without you no poor man would have lived
When abandonment left him deprived

49. Without your might heroes would not have thrived
When rebellion at their rock arrived

50. For others, poems I've composed
Except by privation opposed

51. Banishing them, I erred but you pardoned
And over me grace has hovered

52. Professing passion, yet for God was my verse
To refuge in Abdul Qadir, my hearts traversed

53. So submit to us and him, securely gladdened
As time restores you, be maddened

54. With your grace the world's still Eden
Its fruits, good deeds and carefree reason

55. Remaining as daybreak's pillar cracks the dark
And bulbuls sing at dawn's embark

56. As long as you're with us, our world shines bright
With your goodness, joy, and light
