1. If my love is hidden from my loved ones
Then God knows my melancholy and agony

2. And if the separation has saddened my soul and left it unquenched
It is enough that my enviers are satiated as I'm satiated

3. They say I have abandoned Laila for Zainab
And Egypt and all that's in it for El-Salhiya

4. Had they been truthful in other than this I would have believed
Their claims, Laila would have blamed me and my manhood been disgraced

5. And her right to my love, I have not ceased to yearn for after her
But the nights' circumstances have confused me

6. And I have not slept except remembering her good faith
And the promise of the white nights in El-Azbakiya

7. She raised me as a child on the banks of her Nile
And suckled me the virtuous knowledge

8. And cradled me in the shade of every beauty
Disputing with me the goodness of the two homelands

9. God watered my days there with the best rain
And enlivened our regrets and companion there

10. And I have not ceased those melodies which have flourished
With the light of beauties in joy and bounty

11. And the glades on which the snakes roamed
And the shade of every beauty stretched over them

12. Those are glades, if the snakes avoid them
The tears of every gazelle would flood over them

13. Sending us in winter their roses
The cheeks of their beauties and the red of the nadd

14. And shining in the darkest nights their cups
Like the shining cheeks of the rainy cloud

15. The beauty of every tender one is as if
It is the twinkling of a sky or a slab of silver

16. Does a fragrance from your good scent O morning breeze
Reach my dear noble friends with my greetings?

17. Perhaps the generosity of the good people returns me
To the home of the virtuous, people of chivalry

18. To live in a land that eternally grows glory
And prides itself on the generous honorable people

19. When the eye of heavens is remembered for its beauty
Our beauties say their eyes have been enriched

20. As if its eyelids are plates for its eyes
So the eyes have not languished except to be enriched

21. Its daisies are envied by smiles
And its narcissi by Babylonian eyes

22. God has watered it and given it life with showers
That compete with each brook's pride

23. And protected its sanctuary from long nights
That spoil the joy of short nights

24. And no uncouth son of D'aya has come near it
To frighten away the nightingale of joy
