- أبى الله أن أسمو بغير فضائليGod would not have me rise save through my virtues,
- أتاني والأخبار سقم وصحةNews came to me, of health and illness intertwined,
- أتسعى هكذا أبداWill you strive like this forever,
- أتطمع في المزاج وما تهياCan I hope for the compound when it is not yet prepared—
- أجساد صنعتنا مركبةThe bodies of our craft are compounded;
- أجما البكا يا مقلتي فإنناSpare your tears, O my two eyes, for we
- أجيرتنا بالجزع كيف خلصتمO our neighbors at the valley bend, how did you withdraw
- إحراقنا البالغ في أول التكليسOur thorough burning at the outset of the
- أحلف بالله ما رمزت ولاI swear by God: I have spoken in no riddles, nor
- أخاك أخاك فهو أجل ذخرHold fast to your brother—your brother—for he is the greatest treasure
- اخلط بمائك صمغنا فهماMix with your water our gum, for they
- أخي ماذا دهاك وما أصابكMy brother, what calamity befell you, and what struck you?
- إذا أرواحنا بالطبخ يوماWhen one day our spirits, through cooking,
- إذا استيقظت عيني رأت ما يسوؤهاWhen my eyes awake, they see what pains them
- إذا استيقظت نائبات الزمانWhen the calamities of time awaken,
- إذا التركيب سميناه باسمIf we give the compound a name,
- إذا كنت للسلطان خدنا فلا تشرIf you are the ruler's confidant, do not advise
- إذا لم يعن قول النصيح قبولIf acceptance does not support the counselor's words,
- إذا ما الأرض لم تنخل مراراIf the earth is not sifted repeatedly,
- إذا ما الشمس في السرطان صارتWhen the sun has entered Cancer,
- إذا ما الطلق لم يغسل بماءUnless talc is washed with water
- إذا ما لم تكن ملكا مطاعاIf you are not an obeyed king,
- إذا هممت بأمر دونه خطرIf I resolve upon a venture with danger in its way,
- أذكر مجد الملك حاجتي التيI remind Majd al-Mulk of my need, which
- أرض لنا أنبت ذهباA land of ours brought forth gold,
- أرقت لبرق لاح عني وميضهI lay sleepless for lightning whose gleam shone far from me,
- أرى الأيام تمعن في عناديI see the days persist in opposing me,
- أرى شغفي بطلاب العلىI see my passion for seeking knowledge
- اسعد بيوم قد أتاك مبكراRejoice in a day that has come to you early,
- أصالة الرأي صانتني ( لامية العجم )Soundness of judgment protected me from foolish speech,
- أطامن عن أيدي العفاة تكرماOut of noble generosity I lower my hand beneath the hands of those who ask,
- أعالمة بالرمل عفراء أننيA landmark in the sand, tawny, that I
- أعشابنا بالماء أخرج صبغهاThe dye of our herbs was extracted with water;
- اعمل بجد وجلدWork with diligence and endurance,
- أفدي التي استودعتها بطن الثرىI would give my life for her whom I entrusted to the earth's belly,
- أفدي التي طرقتني في ولائدهاI would ransom her who visited me by night among her maidservants,
- أفنى الليالي شبابيThe nights have consumed my youth,
- أقول لأحداث النوائب إذ عدتI say to the vicissitudes of calamity, when they assail
- أقول لصاحبي ما الرأي فيماI say to my companion, “What do you think of what
- أقول للقلب لما فاتني جزعاI say to my heart, when it outstripped me in anguish:
- أقول لنضوي وهو من شجن خلوI say to my worn-out mount, while it is free of sorrow:
- أقول له وأنضاء المهارI say to him while the stars of Al-Muhar
- أقول وصرف الدهر يحرق نابهI say, while Time's changing fortune gnashes its fang
- أقول وقد غال الردى من أحبهI say, now that death has snatched away the one I love—
- ألا إن علما بين جنبي مودعاBehold, knowledge lies stored between my sides;
- ألا أيها الركب اليمانون ما لكمListen, O Yemeni riders: why do you
- الأرض أم برةThe earth is a kindly mother;
- الجسد البالغ في لينهThe body that has attained perfection in softness—
- الجسم منه مفرد ومركبSome bodies are simple, others compound.
- الحمد لله الذي خصناPraise be to God, who singled us out
- الحمد لله الذي خصناPraise be to God Most High, who favored us
- الحمد لله العلي القادرPraise be to God, the Most High, the All-Powerful,
- الزئبق الأبيض الرقيق إذاThe white, fine mercury, when
- الزئبق الشرقي في سرناEastern mercury, in our secret—the
- الصلب يخلط بالرطوبة مدةThe solid is mixed with moisture for a time,
- الفضة الرطبة ماء لناMoist silver is water for us,
- ألم تر أن الصبر للشكر توأمHave you not seen that patience is gratitude's twin,
- ألم تر أن جند الورد وافىHave you not seen that the army of roses has arrived
- ألم ترني أبحت حريم ماليHave you not seen me throw open the sacred reserve of my wealth?
- المبدأ الأول فيThe first principle in
- الملك الشيخ العقيم الذيThe old, barren king, who
- النور في العلو له معدنLight has its source in the heights,
- إليك أسري فلا تسبق بمكرمةTo you I journey by night; do not be forestalled in a noble deed.
- أما الحديد فإنهAs for iron, indeed,
- أما الخطير فجبة وعمامةAs for al-Khatir, he is a robe and a turban,
- أما الزمان ففي تنبيهه عظةAs for Time, there is a lesson in its admonition,
- أما الشباب فقد تقضAs for youth, it has passed
- أما الشبيبة والنعيم فإننيAs for youth and bliss, I
- أما العلوم فقد ظفرت ببغيتيAs for the sciences, I have attained my desire;
- أما الوفاء فقد ضمنت نجازهAs for keeping faith, I have guaranteed its fulfillment;
- أما ترى المرء له عبرةDo you not see that man has a lesson—
- إن آثارك الجميلة عمتYour beautiful traces have spread
- إن أخذنا الكبريت ثم خلطناIf we took sulfur and then mixed
- إن الألى أرضاك قولهمIndeed, those whose words pleased you
- إن الألى ضربوا لنا مثلاIndeed, those who set forth a parable for us
- إن البرامكة الألى سنوا الندىIndeed, the Barmakids who made generosity a tradition
- إن الجزيرة في البحر المحيط لهاIndeed, the island in the encircling sea possesses
- إن العلى لم تزل تبغي الكفي لهاIndeed, glory never ceased seeking her worthy match
- إن العيون إذا نطقت تخاوصتIndeed, when I speak, eyes narrow
- إن الهواء به الحياةIndeed, through air there is life,
- إن ساغ بعدك لي ماء على ظمأIf, after you, water should ever go down sweet when I thirst,
- إن قوما فارقتهم ملكوا الأمIndeed, a people I parted from have gained power,
- إن يحل دهر أو يمر فإننيIf time grows sweet or bitter, I am
- أنات وذكرانها صنوهاFemales—and their males are their counterparts.
- انظر إِلى الجنة في وجههLook at Paradise in his face.
- أنعت نخلا تجتنىI describe palms: plucked are
- أنعم إذابة ما سكبت فإنهMelt thoroughly what you have poured, for it
- إني لأذكركم وقد بلغ الظماIn my memory you linger, though slander’s
- إني واياك والأعداء تنصرهمI and you and the enemies helping them
- أهاب به داعي الهوى فأجاباLove's caller summoned him, and he answered.
- أهنئ مولانا بأيمن قادمI congratulate our lord on a most auspicious arrival,
- أهون بصرف الدهر أن لهMake light of time's vicissitudes, for they have
- أيا بانتي وادي الأراك وقيتماO two ban-trees of Wadi al-Arak, may you be shielded
- أيا حادي الأظعان غرد فقد بداO driver of the departing caravans, sing, for there has come into view
- أيا سابقا طلاب غايته حسرىO foremost one, whose goal leaves its seekers weary,
- إياك والإرتقاء في سببBeware of climbing by a rope
- أيكية صدحت شجوا على فننA woodland dove sang mournfully on a branch,
- أيمن مولود رأيناه فيThe most auspicious offspring we have seen in
- إيها فإني لا أطيع محرشيEnough! I will not heed my goader.
- بادر بفرصتك الزمان ولاSeize your chance in time, and do not
- بارزت دهري وهو قرني فانتضىI dueled Time, my equal foe, and it unsheathed
- بأصفهان سقاها الله لي سكنIn Isfahan—may God water it—I have a beloved.
- بالزوابيق زال ظل النحاسWith quicksilvers, copper's shadow vanished,
- بالعدل قام الخلق وهو ملاكهBy balance creation stands; balance is its mainstay.
- بالله يا ريح إن مكنت ثانيةBy God, O wind, if you are once more granted access
- بالنار صنعتها وفيهاIts making is by fire, and in it
- بدا الحركات ثم انفك عنهاIt began with motions, then detached from them
- بدموعنا غسلت بقايا ذنبناWith our tears, the remnants of our sin were washed away,
- بضاعة هرمس مكنونةHermes' merchandise is concealed,
- بعثت إلي تلومني في هجعةShe sent to me, reproaching me in my sleep;
- بعض التماسك أيها القلبHold yourself together a little, O heart!
- بنزع الرطوبة من جسمهاWith moisture stripped from its body,
- بنفسي أنت ظاعنة تولتMy life be your ransom, you traveler who has departed,
- بنفسي من أودعتها الترب راغماMy life for her whom I unwillingly laid in the earth,
- بنفسي من ينتابني ويعودنيMy life be ransom for him who comes to me often and visits me in sickness,
- بني إذا السلطان خصك فاعتمدMy dear son, if the sultan singles you out, rely on
- تأبى صروف الليالي أن تديم لناThe vicissitudes of the nights refuse to preserve for us
- تالله ما استحسنت من بعد فرقتكمBy God, since parting from you, nothing has seemed beautiful
- تجربة المرء عن يقينA person's experimentation, grounded in certainty,
- تحاكمنا إلى نوب اللياليWe brought our dispute before the vicissitudes of the nights,
- تحسنت الأيام ثم تنكرتThe days grew kind, then turned hostile;
- تركنا البرية في حيرةWe left humankind bewildered,
- تصدى وللحي الجميع رحيلHe came into view as the whole tribe was departing:
- تصعيد هذا الدهر والتصويبThe raising and lowering of this age—
- تطهر بماء الحياة الذيPurify yourself with the Water of Life that
- تعرض لي بعد السلو وما استحيىHe approached me after I had ceased to pine, and felt no shame,
- تفرد الله بالتقدير ما اشتركتGod alone ordains; none have taken part
- تمنى رجال ما أرادوا وإنماMen wished for what they desired; yet I only
- تناسخ أرواحنا في الجسومOur spirits transmigrate through bodies,
- تنبهت بي طول الليل ناحلةA slender one kept vigil with me all night,
- تنينا جائع له ذنبA hungry dragon has a tail;
- توعدني في حب آل محمدI was threatened for my love of Muhammad’s family,
- جاريت في مضمار عمري عصبةI raced with a band on the racecourse of my life;
- جامل أخاك إذا استربت بودهBe gracious to your brother if you doubt his affection.
- جامل عدوك ما استطعت فإنهTreat your enemy courteously as best you can, for
- جرى بين هرمس والشمس فيThere took place between Hermes and the Sun, in
- جمعنا العلم في بيتينWe have gathered knowledge in two verses—
- جناب نظام الملك بحر وردتهThe court of Nizam al-Mulk is a sea I came to drink from,
- جند من الأحزاب قد نزلوا علىTroops from the factions have descended upon
- حب اليهود لآل موسى ظاهرThe Jews’ love for Moses’ family is plain,
- حجر القوم واحدThe people's stone is one,
- حجر تركيبنا فوق حجرThe stone of our compound is above stone.
- حجر يظهر في التدبيرA stone—in its treat-
- حرمتك إذ رزقتك بعد حرصWhen I lost you after longing for you
- حضاننا السحق فلاOur incubation is grinding, so do not
- حكماؤنا وصفوا لنا صنماOur sages described an idol for us,
- حكمة أخفيت عن الناس طراA wisdom concealed from all people,
- حل وعقد وأثال وأوزانSolutions and knots, examples and measures
- خبت نار نفسي باشتعال مفارقيThe fire of my soul died down as my hair's partings blazed;
- خبروها أني مرضت فقالتThey told her I had fallen ill, and she said,
- خد سواد الصدغ من فوقهA cheek, with the temple-lock's blackness above it,
- خذ العلم عن قرب ونكب عن البعدTake knowledge from what is near, and turn away from what is distant.
- خذ من شبابك صفو العيش مبتدراHasten to take life's pure delight from your youth;
- خذي صفو ما أوتيت واغتنميهTake the choicest of what you have been given, and seize it;
- خفق الطبول وزمرة الندمانThe beating of drums and the company of drinking companions,
- خلطنا بتركيبنا غيرهWe mixed something else with our compound:
- خلق الله للظلام جحيماGod created a hell for the darkness.
- خليلي إما أن تعينا وتسعداMy two friends, either help me and lend me support,
- خليلي لا راع الفراق حشاكماMy two friends, may separation never frighten your hearts,
- خليلي هل من مسعد أو معالجMy two friends, is there anyone to comfort or heal
- خير أمثاله التي ضربوهاThe finest of its parables that they set forth
- ذريني على أخلاقي الشوس إننيLeave me to my proud, unbending ways, for I
- ذريني وما أختاره من تصونيLeave me to the dignity I choose to preserve,
- ذكرتكم عند الزلال على الظماI remembered you beside clear water, parched with thirst,
- رأت إبلي قد غالها الحق واتقىShe saw that rightful dues had depleted my camels, and that they had shielded
- رأى الله لي فيما يراه لي العدىGod chose what was best for me in what my foes intended for me;
- رأيت رجالا يطلبون مساءتيI saw men seeking to harm me,
- رأيت عواري الليالي معادةI saw the nights’ loans returned
- رشأ فتور لحاظهA young gazelle—the languor of his glances
- رطب تراكيبك إنMoisten your compounds if
- رمادنا في قبة مرفوعةOur ash, in a lofty dome,
- رويدك فالهموم لها رتاجBe patient, for sorrows have a closed gate;
- زموا جمالهم وبدد شملهمThey bridled their camels, and their company was scattered
- زوجتها ليقل عتب وشاتهاI married her off to lessen her slanderers’ reproach,
- سأحجب عني أسرتي عند عسرتيI shall keep my family away from me in my hardship,
- سارية ذات عبوس برقهاA frowning night-cloud, whose lightning
- سارية لم تخلناA night cloud has not left us without
- سأصبر حتى تنجلي كل غمةI shall be patient until every sorrow clears away,
- سرى يكتسي قطعا من الليل مظلماHe traveled by night, clothing himself in dark shreds of night—
- سعدت بطول بقائك الحقبThe ages rejoice in the length of your life,
- سقى دارها بالجزع صوب غمائمMay the downpour of clouds water her dwelling at al-Jizʿ,
- سماؤنا من ذهب خالصOur heaven is of pure gold,
- شجرات ورد أصفر بعثتYellow rosebushes have awakened
- صبت على حمير وما انتهبواUpon Himyar and what they had plundered were poured
- صحا عن فؤادي ظل كل علاقةThe shadow of every attachment has lifted from my heart,
- صنوان ضدان أب واحدTwo kindred scions, two opposites—a single father
- ضيف سرى والليل ينفض صبغهA guest journeyed by night, while night shook out its dye
- طبيعتنا التي لا ظل فيهاOur nature, in which there is no shadow,
- ظلوم ليس ينصفنيA cruel one does not treat me fairly.
- عتبت فرضت النفس بالهجر مدةI reproached you, then schooled my soul in estrangement for a time.
- عجبا لقوم يحسدون فضائليHow strange are people who envy my virtues,
- عجنا إلى الجزع الذي مد فيWe turned aside to the valley bend, where across
- علم الماء قتال النارTeach water to fight the
- على أثلات الواديين سلامPeace upon the tamarisks of the two valleys;
- عليك أقمت أرسال الكلامToward you I have directed volleys of speech;
- عوائد برك المشكور عنديYour recurring acts of kindness, gratefully acknowledged by me,
- غايظ صديقك تكشف عن ضمائرهProvoke your friend, and you will uncover his inner thoughts,
- غصون الخلاف اكتست فانبرتThe willow branches clothed themselves; then came
- فديتك أقوال الوشاة كثيرةMay I be your ransom—the slanderers’ tales are many;
- فديتك قد أسمعتني متجرماMay I be your ransom! Accusing me, you have made me hear
- فديتك قد تنبهنا لدهرMay I be your ransom! We have awakened to a time
- فديتك قد حان وقت الصبوحMay I be your ransom! The time for the morning draught has come,
- فضحتك رائحة الذنوب بنتنهاThe odor of sins has exposed you with its stench.
- فؤاد بما شاء الغرام صديعA heart shattered as passion willed,
- فؤاد على كر الحوادث ماردA heart defiant against calamities' onslaught,
- في الحل والعقد حار الناس كلهمIn dissolution and coagulation, all people are bewildered.
- في الحل والعقد سر لا يباح بهIn dissolution and coagulation lies a secret not to be divulged.
- في القلب من حر الفراق شواظIn the heart from the heat of separation are embers
- في الماء سر عظيم لا يحس بهIn water lies a great secret, perceived by none
- في المعدنيات لنا حكمةIn mineral matters, we possess a wisdom,
- في باطن الأرواح كبريتةIn the depths of the spirits lies a grain of sulfur,
- في راحتيك الرزق والأجلIn your two palms lie sustenance and life's appointed end;
- في قديم الدهر قد كان لناIn the ancient times we had
- فيم التجني والصبا طينهWhy this unjust reproach, when youth's clay
- فيم المقام على الهوان وهمتيWhy remain in humiliation, when my ambition
- قال الحكيم مقالا أبانThe sage uttered a saying, making plain
- قالت حرمت الغنى من حيث أوتيهShe said, “You were denied wealth where it was granted
- قالت وقد سمعت أني نسبت بهاShe said, having heard that I had sung of her
- قالوا النحاس مثاله بشرThey said brass was an example of a human
- قالوا خسرت القلب منذ علقتهThey said, “You lost your heart when you fell in love with him,
- قالوا صبرت على المكروه من نفرThey said: You have endured harm from a band of men;
- قالوا وقد بكروا لعذلي إذ رأواThey said, having come early to reproach me, when they saw
- قد أشعل الروض نارا في شقائقهThe garden has kindled a fire in its anemones,
- قد تم بالنقص والتركيب ما طلبواWhat they sought was indeed achieved through reduction and combination,
- قد جاءنا في حكمة مكنونةIt has come to us in hidden wisdom,
- قد خرج التنين من بحرناThe dragon has emerged from our sea,
- قد خلط البياض بالسوادWhiteness has been mixed with blackness,
- قد زرعنا النضار في الفضةWe planted flowers in the white meadow
- قد قلت للتلميذ أذهلهI said to the pupil, distracted
- قد كان حظي في الكتابة ناقصاMy share in writing had been scant,
- قد كان لي في شبيبتي فرحIn my youth I once knew joy
- قد كانت الأفلاك في بدئهاIndeed, the celestial spheres were, at their beginning,
- قد كذب الظن صادق الخبرTrue news has indeed belied conjecture,
- قد مر للرزء الذي حل بيSince the calamity that befell me, there has passed
- قل لمن يطلب الحجرSay to whoever seeks the Stone:
- قوموا إلى لذاتكم يا نيامEnglish translation available
- قيامتنا جمع أرواحناOur resurrection is the gathering of our souls
- كان الشباب هو السرور فرمتهYouth was joy itself, and so I desired it;
- كرات دستنبوية نضدتBalls of dastanbuya fruit were arrayed,
- كرات نارنج لطاف غضهDelicate, tender spheres of bitter orange,
- كفى حزنا بأن تمضي اللياليSorrow enough: the nights pass away,
- كم ليلة بتنا وجدي عينهHow many a night we spent, with my good fortune's eye
- كم ليلة ساهرت زهر نجومهاHow many a night I have kept vigil with its radiant stars,
- كونوا جميعا يا بني إذا اعترىBe united, my sons, when there comes
- لا أدعي أني وفيت بعهدكمI do not claim I was faithful to my covenant with you
- لا الماء النقي به خلطناWe mixed no pure water with it
- لا تتهم من شق فاك فإنهNever mistrust Him who opened your mouth, for He
- لا تجزعن إن فات ما رمتهDo not despair if what you sought eludes you,
- لا تحقرن الرأي وهو موافقDo not scorn an opinion when it accords
- لا تسهرن إذا ما الرزق ضاق ونمDo not stay awake when sustenance grows scarce; sleep
- لا تطمحن إلى المراتب قبل أنDo not aspire to high stations before
- لا تيأسن إذا ما كنت ذا أدبNever despair, if you possess learning,
- لا يجمد الماء بأجسادهWater does not congeal with its bodies
- لا يزهدنك في الجميل مقابلDon't let an ingrate make you dislike doing good.
- لا يزهدنك في المعروف تودعهDo not be deterred from bestowing kindness
- لاح الهلال والثريThe crescent appeared, and the Pleiades
- لاحظته والبدر ليلة تمهI gazed at him, while the full moon, on the night of its fullness,
- لجلال قدرك تخضع الأقدارBefore the majesty of your rank, destinies bow.
- لعمرك ما أغبك عن فتورBy your life, my infrequent visits are not due to any waning
- لعمرك ما يرجى شفائي والهوىBy your life, there is no hope of my recovery, while love
- لقاء الأماني في ضمان القواضبThe attainment of hopes lies in the surety of keen swords.
- لقد بغض المرآة عندي أنهاWhat has indeed made the mirror hateful to me is that it
- لقد هاجني والصبح طلق المباسمIndeed, while dawn was radiant with smiles, I was stirred
- لقياك من غير الزمان أمانMeeting you is protection against the reversals of time;
- لك الخير قد عودتني منك عادةMay good be yours! You have accustomed me to a habit of yours,
- لك الله هل عهد الشبيبة يرجعDoes youth return by God's will?
- للجسم إن داخلته روحه فرعThe body has an offshoot if its spirit enters it;
- لم أنسه والقوس في يدهI have not forgotten him, the bow in his hand,
- لمثل معاليك تعنو الرقابTo eminence such as yours, necks bow.
- لمن في عراص البيد نوق مطاريبWhose song-stirred she-camels are these in the open desert spaces?
- لنا أرض نشمسها زماناWe have earth we expose to the sun for a time,
- لنا الأنهار من لبن وخمرOurs are rivers of milk and wine,
- لنا شيمة لا ترتضي الغدر صاحباWe have a nature that does not tolerate treachery as a companion,
- لو أن يوم فراقهم عن موعدHad the day of parting from them been appointed beforehand,
- لي همة فوق هام النجم أخمصهاI have an ambition whose foot’s arch is above the stars’ crowns,
- ما بعد يومك للحزين الموجعAfter your day, what remains for the sorrowful, afflicted man
- ما للظباء غداة سائفة النقاWhat ailed the gazelles, that morning at the dune's edge,
- ما لي وللحاسدين لا برحتWhat have I to do with the envious? May there be no end
- مراضيع من الريحان تسقىNurslings of basil are watered
- مريض بأرض الري أعياه داؤهA sick man in the land of Rayy, worn out by his illness;
- مضى وزراؤكم موتا وقتلاYour ministers passed away through death and killing,
- ملائكة السماء هم أمدواEnglish translation unavailable
- ملنا إلى النشر الذي تلتقيWe turned toward the upland, where gather
- من الناس من لم يكن عارفاSome people were not aware
- من تاب عن شرب المدامIf someone has repented of drinking wine
- من خص بالشكر الصديق فإننيIf anyone singles out a friend for thanks, I, for my part,
- من قاس بالعلم الثراء فإنهWhoever measures wealth against knowledge is indeed
- من كان أخطأه الزمان بكيدهIf time has spared anyone its scheming,
- من منصفي من ظلوم صار في يدهWho will do me justice against an oppressor into whose hands has fallen
- موازين الطبائع في يديناThe balances of nature are in our hands;
- مولاي أكرم من ألوذ بظلهMy lord is the most generous of those in whose shade I seek refuge;
- ميقات موسى يوم تدبيرناMoses’ appointed term is the time of our operation;
- نار الهوى تسبك القلوب وبالLove's fire smelts hearts, and through
- نارنجنا في لونهOur bitter orange, in its color
- نجوم العلى فيكم تطلعThe stars of greatness rise in you,
- نجومنا سبعة في الكتب قد وضعتOur stars are seven; they have been set down in the books.
- نحاسنا تغلنا وزئبقناOur copper is [our residue?], and our mercury
- نصحنا لكم نصحا نرجي ثوابهWe have given you sincere counsel, hoping for its reward
- نصيحكما فيما يقول مريبYour adviser is suspect in what he says,

- وحول ميادين الرياض تراصفتAnd around the gardens’ open spaces stood in close rows
- ودعت طيب العيش ساعة ودعاI bade life’s sweetness farewell the moment they bade farewell.

- يا ابن الألى خضعت لملكهمO son of those to whose rule bowed
- يا أيها الباحث عن سرناO seeker of our secret,
