بينamong الأنامِhumankind فمحسنٌthus, a benefactor أوor منعِمُa bestower of favors
Indeed, the Barmakids who made generosity a tradition
among humankind—each a benefactor or a bestower of favors—
يشكونthey complain أنَّكthat you قدindeed نسختَyou superseded فِعَالَهمْtheir deeds
حتَّىuntil تُنوسِيَwas forgotten ماwhat تقدَّمَcame before منهمُfrom them
complain that you have superseded their deeds,
until what they had done before was forgotten.
وشرعتَand you ordained فيin دينِthe creed of المكارمnoble deeds ماwhat عَمواthey were blind

And you ordained in the creed of noble deeds things they were blind
to in part, and understood what they did not understand.
فتكَdealt a deadly blow الرشيدُal-Rashid بهمto them فخلَّدthus immortalized ذكرَهُمْtheir memory
ومحوتَهُand you erased it محواًutterly فَهُمْso they لكtoward you ألوَمُmore reproachful
Al-Rashid struck them down, thus immortalizing their memory;
but you have utterly erased it, so they reproach you more.
فارفِقْso be gentle بهمwith them واستَبْقِand preserve بعضَsome of ثنائِهمْtheir acclaim
كرماًout of generosity فقدfor indeed دانُواthey acknowledged بأنكthat you are أكرمُmore generous
So be gentle with them and preserve some of their acclaim,
out of generosity, for they have acknowledged that you are more generous.
