أفنَىconsumed اللياليthe nights شبابيmy youth
وغادرتْنيand abandoned me لماto what بيails me
The nights have consumed my youth,
My youth is lost in nights gone by
and abandoned me to what ails me,
Leaving me with my lonely sigh
وخلَّفتْنيand left me behind وحيداًalone
وأسرعتْand hastened فيamong صِحابيmy companions
and left me behind, alone,
Abandoning me so alone
and swiftly carried off my companions.
Speeding from me, leaving me to groan
ومسَّنِيand befell me منfrom أذاهَاtheir harm
ماwhat لمnot يكنْwas فيin حسِابيmy reckoning
And from their harm I suffered
Afflicting me with harm untold
what I had never reckoned on.
Beyond what I thought could unfold
ولمand did not تدعْleave ليَfor me رأياًan inclination
فيfor صَبْوةٍyouthful passion أوor تَصابِيfeigning youth
And they left me no inclination
Granting me no time to see
for youthful passion or feigning youth.
My carefree youthful reverie
لاno لذّةٌpleasure فيin سَمَاعٍlistening to music

No pleasure in music,
No joy left in tales once told
nor desire for drink,
No pleasure found in drinks of old
عندbeside الفتاةِthe maiden الكَعَابِwith budding breasts
nor longing for life
No happy life left to behold
beside the budding-breasted maiden.
With a fickle girl, now stern and cold

فيin مَعمرٍan abode منof جَنابيmy precincts
O bird that lived awhile
Oh bird, you lived happily before
in an abode within my precincts,
In a nest safe from strife and war
فكايدتْهُthen plotted against it اللياليthe nights
فيin وَكْرهِits nest بالخرابِwith ruin
then the nights plotted against it
But nights betrayed you more and more
in its nest, bringing ruin—
Destroying your home to the core
ماذاwhat بعُشِّكَin your nest فادْرُجْthen depart
عنfrom منزلٍa dwelling بكto you نابيinhospitable
what is there in your nest? Then depart
Why still long for your ravaged nest?
from a dwelling inhospitable to you.
Abandon it, leave it to rest
والحقْand catch up بسِربِكَwith your flock تسلَمْyou will be safe
منfrom وحدةٍsolitude واغترابِand estrangement
And join your flock; you will be safe
Join your flock, away you must fly
from solitude and estrangement.
From loneliness, sadness and sigh
ولاand let not يغرَّنْكَdeceive you حَبٌّgrain
منثورةٌscattered فيon الروابيthe hills
And let no grain deceive you,
Love scattered, tempting you to stay
scattered on the hills:
Is but a trap laid in your way
إنindeed الحبائِلَthe snares بُثَّتْhave been laid
منfrom تحتِهاbeneath it فيin الترابِthe earth
for snares have been laid
beneath it in the earth.
